It begins?

Just sent out a pdf of initial ideas and mechanisms for BB version 2.
Some new mechanisms. Some old friends too.
No real heavy work due to start on the BB until POE sorted by end of January 2019.
POE players know that the first drafts tend to be constantly changing. The later drafts hardly change at all.
I expect BB to run to 86 versions before being completed.

Don't worry. There are enough of edition 1 BB for the next 5 years or so.   Maybe buy an extra copy now, just in case there is a big rush?

Look forward to playing this period.
I am classifying it as medieval albeit other places insist it is renaissance (!!). ::)

Great to be on board for this new version. The original version  was the first Peter Pig set I play tested 15years ago. I really enjoyed it and bought over 1000 figures to have two sides for the big scenarios in the rules. Looking at the initial ideas 150-200 figures/markers required but things change

Must admit I am looking forward to the process too. Espeacially as i have an army already Painted and will only need extras this time round. So for once i am actually in step with the process....
Must do some purpose build Commanders this time and finsh off my Calvary.
I ve got a Castle as well ? One of the Russian compies ones, might be able to have that to one side ?

Castle will be good Miles.  Battle of Wakefield near Sandal castle.

Quick question.

What are your thoughts on how to represent the units on the table? I'm thinking about archers mainly. Units are 4 bases in size. One base will likely be the command base so we can put a colourful flag on there. Will it be 2 fighting bases and 1 archer base? Mixed fighting and archer bases? Just cogitating the aesthetic ideas at the moment.

Intrigued by the zone idea as opposed to squares...

I wonder whether there is a castle designed for an aquarium that might be a good fit? I'm going to take a look next time im at our local garden centre.

For quality I am keeping the system I used for the original set as my figures are all ready based.
That is gree grass for Retenue, brown dirt for levey and A mix of both for household.

Interested in play testing new BB rules. I've a couple of big WotR armies, currently based up for Hail Caesar.

Not sure about the units Sean. Maybe 2 archer, 1 bill and 1 command??
Showing quality will also need addressing.  Possibly vet=right, Av = middle and raw left.
Problem might be when the frontage is 2 bases.
Maybe sabots from warbases  that are 4 bases wide. But then when out of order another sabot of 2x2 is needed.

These early editions can change a great deal, once play testing starts.

That's a very neat idea, Stewart.

It was before we used the position of the  cmd base with flags (AWI,ACW)
To show quality - Right/front - vet,centre - average, left/rear- raw.

Sean Clark

Yes I suppose the command base might be considered fighting too, so two of each. I appreciate that this could all change. In know in our discussion in November you were thinking about units of 6 bases.

Or how about you put a mix of troops per base to created a diorama effect with the actual number of archers and bills irrelevant. There is some precedence for this in Vikings where one in 4 bases is assumed to be able to shoot but you don't necessarily have to represent the archers. You could have 2 archers and 2 billmen per base.

martin goddard

Maybe the command base could be the one that marks unit quality.
The problem with that is extra command bases would need to exist in order to allow the player some variety in unit quality from game to game.

plenty of time for ideas to sprout forth.
