It begins?

Some instant ideas.
1. An appendage (ouch!) to the command base. Fits in between the men. Arrow, colour, semi circle
2. A unit marker. 4x1 cm base with a chap? Or the semi circle (because it is clear which unit it is belonging too??)
3. Shout out marker.
4. 6cm coloured strip of square section (balsa. rod etc). In front = household. Behind = levy. No marker retinue.

That all hurt my head.  So to bed,

Sean Clark

With unit sizes reduced from the original, how about quality being denoted by the number of figures per base as per Vikings. Or the number of figures on the commanders base? 4 for Household 3 for Retinue and 2 for levy? Retinue will usually be the most frequently seen so a few extra bases for Household and Levy would probably do.

For the current BB system I just use different size standards, small one for levy,  bigger for retained and the long tailed pendant for Household, that way you can use the same figures for different quality troops by swapping the leader base.

I think Sean and Chris have good solutions. In POE there will be variations for all markers etc. I can do this again for BB.

Had game today of BB.(second quiver?)
There are lots of things to change. The rules are not yet finished.

Sean Clark

oh common on Martin. You've had at least a couple of days at it. Must work harder.

Can't wait for version 84 of the rules to see how much changes from version 1. The playtesting and development of Peter Pig rules must be second to none.

May i humbly suggest a pack of special quality marker figures and use one of these on a small base adjacent to the unit to denote its status. These could be a suitable warrior demeanour figure or something else. Maybe a figure plus an animal perhaps? A noble hound for household, a chicken for levy,  or a goat/rabbit/cat/sheep for the retinue chaps.

I am using movement trays painted Red- household, blue - retinue, white - levey,
Down side I need two sizes (battleline and out of order)

Yes Graham. Some sort of marker is needed. Problem is, i didn't want folk to spend time on lovely markers and then find them redundant.
Often a good idea just happens along.
An example of this was when we decided back in 2000 to put "flag on the right =Veteran"  "flag on the left = raw'  has worked well.  So "might is right". trouble is, i then had some wasted veteran and raw markers. If we can get something that requires no markers then even better. There must be something that can be done with either formation, orientation or some thing intrinsic to the unit.  Stewart has used base colours to effect. The position of the command base might be a good fall back for the moment?

My ROF v1 armies have odd musicians for marking disorder, a powder barrel on a base for first fire, odd worried looking officers for troops falling back etc.. My "friends" took one look at my assorted WOR figures and decreed that man with wooden leg meant a unit that had eaten breakfast and the chap talking to a head was a unit that was distracted by the 15th century version of facebook.... they are rather too cheeky for my taste, I may need a new set of game opponents.

If you use 6 base units rather than 4 you would be able to utilise flag position as in CWB. Household = right, Retinue = centre and Levy = left. I have used this for years in my BB display games etc.

You make a good point John. But....the difficulty is  judging at what number of figures do players from the "i want to blow things up and paint 12 figures" become put off by.  i do want to welcome in new players to WOTR as well as retain intellectual challenge, for those whom already like the period.  Surely it is easy to please all of the people all of the time?? :)

Sean if you go on Amazon the Russian companies that makes castles are quite cheap. 20-30 quid which is not much or than you would pay in a fish type shop for one of there castle models

Leman (Andy)

Thanks for the info Smiley - just bagged myself one of those.
