What are you working on....?

Colonel Kilgore

Finally finished basing and flocking my cowboy force (which I'd started in December) for the Western Day next weekend.

This gives me a whole 5 days to complete my scenery - what could possibly go wrong?

Leman (Andy)

Currently working on Highlanders for my BEF force. After consulting a number of books and websites for inspiration I decided to go for a front apron only with the rear of the kilt painted using the Gordon pattern (or as near as I can muster). I really like the way these highlanders have been modelled.

Currently trying to finish lots of dead people. Managed to knock a load of dead harquebusiers out couple of weeks ago, the foot dead have been undercoated but that's as far as it's got. Keep thinking I'll do those tomorrow but real life keeps getting in the way.

Fortunately the rest of my life is pretend life.

Very pleased to say I've pulled my finger out and got my dead people painted. Halfway through I had an epiphany and decided that there should be specific casualty figures for individual regiments. Some reorganisation and repainting required to match coat colours,  and two painted figures were ditched and two dead musketeers (from the spares box) have come into play. Then that led onto labelling casualty marker bases.

Then I had a look at my basing, quite a few things didn't match (mud colourwise) so they got adjusted to match the bulk of the armies. Some standards had there edges painted as there was some white showing where they shouldn't be.

Next up: decide who my generals are and label them (this'll need a good few cups of tea to aid the creative flow), some of my older casualty markers will get there faces and hands repainted  (much happier with how I do flesh now), my Naseby Windmill base will need tittervating to match everything else. After all that I have run out of things to do before 128 cavalry.

Most PP rules use casualty markers. I find that if they are mounted on coins players treat them as such and are very careless in the handling. Given 4 casualty markers players often just pile them up in their hand ,whereas 4 bases of infantry would be more respected. Psychology?
I like to see the casualties as it gives the impression of hard fighting. Now i mount them on 2p pieces, the bigger coin helps limit the damage. In addition i do a basic wash finish on a set that i can lend to people who are careless and then less effort is need for repairs.
Having the western rules use wounded whom are kneeing has helped too. A vertical pose gets kinder handling.

Leman (Andy)

I no longer mount casualties on coins but instead use circular Mdf bases, as I found that even in storage, when the coins move about they chip the paint off the figures. The Mdf seems much kinder. I remember my old woodwork teacher telling us that metal should be hit with a metal hammer and wood with a mallet. The mallet always comes off worse when hitting metal.

I like 2p pieces for my casualties, but store them on a magnetic sheet.

This requires a degree of sorting out of magnetic (newer) 2p pieces from the older non-magnetic variety!

Finishing off my terrain tiles for Saturday's Western games. 7 completed and 23 more almost there...

My casualty markers are based on those thick Warbases casualty marker dials.

I like this thread. It's like my conscience, looking over my shoulder reminding me what I have to do. (Plus it seems to spur this idle slacker into action.)

Duncan

So then Martin, does that mean if we have had figures that are simply washed you consider us to be careless and to heavy handed?😂

Leman (Andy)

Now got the BEF command base up and ready for painting. The Highlanders just need their wash of the magic stuff. Once the command base is complete it will then be time to paint and dress the entire brigade's bases, finish off my Romano-British Saga force, then crack on with von Kluck's boys.

It means, Duncan, that heavy handed gamers get to use my "washed" casualty markers. They have made no casualty figures (otherwise they would not be borrowing mine) of their own, so it is hard to determine how a heavy handed gamer would paint their figures. Probably not at all?  Is that good logic?

OK they look great Stewart.
so you have Eagles, naval cannons, is it a sail?, and a submarine conning tower, so what do each represent in the game?
