Good-I am a big fan of the small army idea. RFCM on a 3 x3 with heroes and a great pregame. Works for me.

The Osprey rules with their small armies and period flavour seem very popular.

Ancients is really tied to big battles(too much)- whilst I have loads of figures tied to DBM basing, I have always fancied smaller actions on a smaller 3x3? table at warband level -sort of skirmish heavy.

Romans would fit, obviously, but a small chariot force would have great appeal to me. It would be nice to see the return of the hero into ancients.

Huge potential for colonial wars-Dutch/English/Spanish/ Portugese.  Loads of pre-game back stabbing and shifting alliances.

A raiding game based on the border reivers would be fun-and late tudor/dutch/Irish wars revolt could easily tie in for the figures.

My #1 hate are wargamers who think that wargames are an accurate representation of warfare.

Game first....

Love ROF... Good rule set can be a spur a huge amount of reading.

Dunbar seems to be a well documented battle....

Cromwell's Masterstroke: Dunbar 1650
Peter Reese

This is an excellent account of the battle and campaign-has lots of detail about 17c warfare.

I now want a New Model Veteran(with a Captain Hook style false arm) to be a member of my New Model 2nd Brigade.

I think it is down to gamers loving their tape measures and all of the pointless bickering over distance!

Visually, I use chalk dots on a felt map, so it hardly disrupts the view.

I like the constraint of squares and they help me focus on tactics, not arbitrary rows over mm.

Once warfare gets into three dimensions, it gets really complex.

However, naval computer games are great!
