Always interesting to hear what others are working on at the moment. It'll be no surprise to those that know me that it is virtually all Peter Pig stuff.
1. My Somme Squarebashing game for the Piggie weekender.
2. Rebasing my Vietnam for the new Men of Coy. B
3. AWI and ACW collections both need finishing to the stage where I can fight all of the historical battles listed in the rules book.
4. Some odds and ends for Regiment of Foote like the preacher, dog and sprinkles set.
I also do some other bits at my club, mainly Warmachine and Malifaux; so I always have a few figures for those games on my workbench.
Regards
Sean
Currently:
3mm ACW for a Shiloh scenario (plus others in western theatre)
2mm Langensaltza 1866 - almost complete apart from some poplars and road sections
6mm ACW Vicksburg campaign for use with Altar of Freedom.
Everything else resting at present. Next project likely to be 15mm ECW, Waller's Western army.
A 24 man Rebel regiment of Peter Pig figures based up for Black Powder. A 28mm Australian cavalry Vickers Mk VI. And Chewbacca from the Imperial Assault game.
1. Sprinkles for RoF
2. More VC & NVA dead, Sappers for Men of Coy B
3. Ordered the new buildings for ECW
4. 3 packs of high walls , base coat done needs finishing touch
Thanks for that info Stewart. I hadn't realised the new buildings were now available.
What am I working on is a bit like how many projects have you not finished.
I'm currently working on
15mm
RCW red army (on going for the last two years)
WW1 LW French ( new project 4 battalions painted another six just ordered)
Partians - PP figures DBX based bought for ADLG but i just like the figures, six more LH to paint (started this year and hopefully finished soon)
FPW - one Prussian division painted, plus some Saxons need to paint the French (on going 2 years plus)
Gauls - just a few outstanding (DBX type again)
AWI - I still have some Brits and Americans to paint, outstanding from Washington's Wars
Napoleonics - Waterloo Allies, should have been ready for an anniversary game of Quatre Bras, running a bit late on that.
Roman Civil Wars - Caesars started 2016 when will it be completed?
I'd better not add the 25mm lead pile.
More interesting is what to start next.
Chris
It doesn't matter how many projects we have on the go, it only takes a film, magazine article or website to kick start another one. The number of times I have contemplated Ancients is ridiculous. I too am looking at ADLG thanks to Tim Porter (aka Madaxeman).
Also French Indian wars, Franco Prussian, War of 1812, Zulus, Crimean, Marlburian...etc etc ;D
Back to some ACW now.
Oh dear don't get me started on that
Well, I had been working on AK47 for quite some time. I've not quite painted everything in the lead pile yet, but have several boxes of toys based and ready to go: already more than I could legitimately deploy for 2 forces.
So I started on some Sudan figures for some light entertainment. I still have several (dozens...) to go.
Until I got distracted by the [non-RFCM - sorry...] Muskets & Tomahawks rules (skirmish: not too many figures to paint up), so I bought far more Piggy AWI than I'll need for that too.
I am very proud that I resisted the urge to restart on ECW (I have a lot of painting time invested in some old Mikes Models figures, of "quaint" proportions that might not fit too well with the latest PP offerings), but I have been sorely tempted...
But then I was struggling to find time to do any painting at all, due to providing a taxi service for the children and having to go to work occasionally to feed the lead habit.
Fortunately Osprey then issued "A World Aflame" (skirmish, simple rules, even easier to paint up) so I'd been buying some of Martin's nice new SCW sculpts too.
Of course, he then went and complicated things by starting work on a re-boot of the Vietnam rules [which will now usefully fit on our dining room table...], figures for which I'm currently working on now.
I hope I'm not alone in my pursuit of the latest shiny things...
Kilgore,
You can rest assured that you are a certified wargamer of some merit. Base those SCW on 3cmx3cm for World in Flames then they'll be usable in the new PBI variant for SCW that Martin is looking at next towards the end of the year!
Sean,
You are too kind.
I now feel fully empowered to continue in my dysfunctional ways, in the sure knowledge that I am following the True Path.
Thank you,
Simon
Can't disagree on that one.
Just expanding my ECW collection, every now and then, to allow me to play 2000 pts (approx 600 figs) per side for Baroque. Not much time for my own stuff as I'm fully booked up for almost 18 months painting for others.
Covenanters and Montrose Royalists for my own collection next year.
My lead pile all gone, couple of resin buildings to finish then my paint brush can retire for a week or two
Have you made a pact with the Devil Stewart?
Stewart,
I was tempted to use the dreaded "smite" button for smugness - please don't torment the rest of us so...
Simon
You must have 1 or 2 figures left? ;D
three projects at once, WW2 german infantry, WW2 german cavalry, and converting wagons (western, Napoleonic, ACW) for a WW2 German supply train.
Just the wife, I can buy what I like as long as I paint it.
After a big tidy up of Das Buro, I found my US character pack with the K9 team and a couple of officers in it for Men of Company B. The K9 team is an asset that helps with searching for caches. I made a start on it last night along with some AWI militia and (shock!) some Lancashire Games Continentals. I've had these for years and wasn't planning on using them for Washingtons Army as they are somewhat rough compared to Peter Pig. However they are getting painted and may well make an appearance in one of the bigger scenarios from the rule book.
I have bought a small British army with me to paint whilst on holiday. Dont mention the war!
Late war British destined for the Somme actually. Only around 4 colours needed so not taking up too much space!
At the moment I've got a French Squadron and German Arronef fleet staring at me from the lead pile and I really ought to be making some headway with them, 28mm and 15mm WW2 Russians for Stalingrad, a couple of 15mm Sci Fi forces, and a Wild West/ Mexican Revolution game to sort out, too many projects I know.
Oh then there's the 15mm WW1/ Russian Civil War that may well go into the Back of Beyond with the arrival of the Turks 😄 via Mesopotamia, all good stuff. I sort of go in cycles of "ooh shiny", at the mo WW1 is moving forwards.
Getting to the end of painting the USS Tyler for the BBB Bash Day in February.
Will soon have 15mm ECW piggies to turn into the New Model and a regt pack from Matchlock for the Royalists
I am working on some PP Saxons and some Essex Normans.
Busy getting two armies ready for BAIT, Carlists and regular army.
Adding some early ww2 french mortars, Italian Bersaglieri mortars.
making some ECW mtd casualty half bases.
Finishing my vietnam forces in readiness for the new rules in the new year.
Completing Union infantry, artillery and commanders for Shiloh. Still have caissons and general scenic items to do to finish off the project. Meanwhile also basing up some 28mm Swiss pike, before moving on to Austrians and Russians for SB.
Trying to make as much headway as I can on my 1917 Brits over the Christmas holiday...
Going to assemble a Huey kit for Vietnam.

Over 300 figures , 4 guns, 6 vehicles painted whilst house sitting these last 3 weeks
Wow - you make me feel very inadequate....
!0mm SYW Le Noble Freikorps, 8th Prussian Dragoons and a TBM Central European church.
For myself (at some point), PP ACW Union Limbers and a few more Rebels.
8th Army Brits for PBI, late war Brits for PBI, plus a handful of 1:72nd plastic Macedonians just because I felt like it at the time ( good old impulse purchasing)
My SCW purchase at Salute is now based ready for undercoating and painting.
I aim to finish off my bamboo jungle tomorrow night.
I guess the new SCW will be popular at the games weekend
Now moved on to SYW Austrian and Prussian light troops.
just finished (well almost) Picts for Mortem et Gloriam

Very nice
Those look nice.
Very effective - love the basing!
Very nice indeed
Stewart
I'm contemplating putting on 'Pickets Charge' or one of the AWI battles for the weekender. Although I am sure I'll be playing the odd game of SCW!
Rather like those Picts - unfortunately mine are still languishing in full lead mode.
Currently working on Battlefront Plastic T34s and just received my packs of Peter Pig Russian Scouts. Amoeba camo in 15mm ummmm...
I've decided to get all the half done stuff finished. Mainly WWII Germans at the moment predominantly PP plus a Zvezda ISU 122.
Busy painting some french equipment in apple green for the french invasion of Morocco in 1830. Using mainly plastics with some metal bits.
Austrian uhlans and hussars for SB.
Some 15mm Renaissance Muscovites

Very nice, this week finished what I bought at the Exeter show, 3 units of British cav for the Cambrai day, a Sherman DD for my fisticuffs game and 4 bases of morrocan cmd for SCW

Some 15mm Renaissance Muscovites
Very nice! So, you had a spare 15 minutes yesterday, then? :)
Busy yesterday, cooked tea,Did most of it Wednesday, final varnish this morning
Nice command bases!
Les, that sounds esoteric. explain what you are up to please?
The 54mm group wants to put on a game at Warfare.
Again there is a lot of napoleonic plastic stuff that had not changed into the 1830's.
The invasion of algeria was the start of France's colonisation of North Africa that has gone on since, going through the esoteric French foreign legion in the sand and those fosts we recall from Beau Geste.
I was using some of the Imex and Italeri kits to build some equipment and artillery.
Some dress is very similar to the Zouaves etc.
The french are in their cherry red and dark blue.
The algerians, moroccans, and other north africans are very colourful.
Just a little something until I get back to the SCW next weekend!

Here is the finished article

10mm Austrian grenadiers for Honours of War.
Les, that sounds interesting. Will need a handout or similar to inform the watchers?
Shadow war armageddon has prompted me to dig out some long neglected rogue trader era minis and get them painted up.
Just completed a 10mm timber framed house by Supreme Littleness.
Just completed some catus bases for the up coming western set. 2 x field guns and 2 x a/t guns for SCW. So nothing left to paint. Expecting lots of western stuff when I get back from Historicon.
Also looking to Western theme. Have just ordered a load of Native Americans and cavalry/army figures. Will probably get some townsfolk as I like the whole maki g town village scenes just from modelling.
As well as that of course I am painting the 1/32nd Zulus and British for our Zulus war game. Making 1/32nd scenery as well.
Also got a bit of post apocalyptic stuff, bikers, townsfolk, agents, APCS, swamp boats etc. Not for any particular ruleset but just because they look cool!
Doing a massive re-base of my FPW collection, which I would like to give a Square Bashing outing when I can sort out an adaptation. Also sprucing up my PP ACW markers for CWB at the club.
Am touching up my Mexicans at this moment(ouch!). I can't see to paint, but will be doing a light undercoat and then an ink wash with burnt sienna. That should do?
Don't forget the big moustache they were all issued with
Get your brush off my maracas!
Stewart, i have not got to the women yet!
;D ;D ;D
Cleaning up an eclectic mix of mounted cowboys while I waited for my order of Mexicans to arrive (already waiting for me when I got home tonight, the PP pixies having processed, picked, packed and posted the entire order in less than 24 hours last week - excellent service as ever).
This was actually quite an enjoyable task as they were so easy to clean, reminding me (my first PP purchases were from the Western range, which then got me into a number of others) quite what a diverse and characterful this range is.
And, while I'm waxing lyrical, the horses look great. To be honest, I didn't like the look of them on the website, but "in the lead" they are nicely-sculpted and suitably lean: quite unlike the Essex 15mm "light" [sic] horses I have spent many a sad hour scraping reams of metal from, or - worse - the Irregular equivalents that had so much hard-to-remove flash on that they got themselves sold before ever venturing near a paintbrush. Martin does spoil us!
Back on the AWI french by Pp. Just finished one regiment and on the next.
As my FPW rebase nears completion I have now started to paint up some additional units.
I have probably missed this but have you gone 10mm with your FPW?
Yes, I went 10mm twice, i.e. I started back about 1992 with Wargames South, and then added some of the early Pendraken and Chariot, then about 98 I sold the lot and went 15mm. However, when Pendraken brought out their remodelled FPW I went back to the 10mm and sold the 15s. I have very recently added some Wargames South figures, which have just been re-released by Red Eagle Miniatures, for old times sake, and because I rather regretted selling those particular figures in the first place. I do quite a lot of 10mm gaming these days, reserving 15mm for Hellenistic warfare, The Wars of the Roses, the ECW, the ACW and Belgium 1914.
PP SCW ready for the completion of the rules.
Vietnam firebase stuff and ambush markers.
25mm resin buildings for a display of the localish club, LES GUERRIERS DU MARAIS (THE WARRIORS OF THE MARAIS) at the end of September, it will be a Saga game on a "viking" stand at the Normandy Festival in Carentan.
French invasion of Morocco in 1830. 54mm skirmish game for warfare in November.
Western buildings and scenery as well as towns people.
Zulus are all done along with civilian farmers in 54mm. Now looking at some Boers in 54mm and more British. As well as this I have some Orcs in 54mm just because they looked cool.
I also have on the back burner some 15mm sci-fi, WW1, and tiny scale spaceships, these are all done just as and when I feel like a break from my current project.
Another big one at the moment is my OO gauge model railway.
Trying to simultaneously progress my Western forces and clear up a couple of Vietnam projects (finally basing my VC force and completing some M48 tanks) which have been languishing on the desk for far too long.
Also got distracted over the holidays by a couple of the great little £2 1:144 WW2 Revell planes, "helped" by Kilgore Juniors #1 and #2. Not strictly wargaming (although the Stuka and ME109 would both be great for the new SCW rules) but good for keeping up the interest of the next generation until they can play with the new cowboys.
Stopped working on PP SCW as I have two forces with lots of extras, waiting for the trucks and armoured cars, an announcement at Colours perhaps.
Small bits of checks on HYITJ rules, but very early stages, lots of changes to come.
Vietnam firebase perimeter defences made just need dry brushing, ambush markers, perimeter defenders and gun crews finished. Making the eight squares that make the firebase, 3 ready for dry brushing, 2 for inking, and 3 started but need some more work.
It would be good to see your Firebase stuff when it's done, Les, and maybe you could share your techniques? It sounds as though you're putting a lot of care and effort in.
Yep I'll get some photos posted and some info on how its all built.
Heres where I am as of today lunchtime.
https://imgur.com/a/fdIfe
That's looking really good, Les - some proper scratch-building and the ground effects look very good [if a tad gory with the blood red in places!].
Interesting that you are doing each square on its own "full" base (i.e. as opposed to just a standalone model that would sit somewhere in the 6 x 6" square), and it seems to work well. Is that aluminium sheeting you're using as the base?
Keep at it, and keep posting!
Looks good Les
Les
That is inspirational.
or sacre blu mon ami
Yes I thought that i would make them as tiles as they can still be arranged in any pattern each in any orientation.
The 6" squares are made from 1mm aluminium, easy to cut with a jigsaw. Came free from some old signs.
The 3" x 6" perimeter pieces are offcuts from draw bases that come pre finished. With both base materials I then do not have any warping problems.
The red will disappear when I have finished dry brushing.
Next I need to get the resin putty out to make the sand bags.
A new range of Tanks. Those on a diet do not buy. :)
A new Tank range:
Those on a diet should avoid!
Wardy
Absolutely brilliant, whose birthday yours?
Do they come in other colours?
Bit of competition for Martin and Julie!!
My son Ben, who was with us at Cambrai. He had a 40k landraider last year in blue.
Wardy
Cambrai would have been easier. Lots of the brown stuff!!
Chocolate every war, it's the Coco war.
Varnishing my VC force while listening to Martin's dulcet tones in the new SCW videos.
What more could one ask for of an evening?
Yes I consumed the videos whilst eating dinner yesterday.
I've often thought about doing a video play through to demonstrate some of the older rules sets like CWB or Bloody Barons.
Did any of you spot the armoured trucks in the videos?
Restarting all my piggy armies for most systems!
No pictures but I have now nearly finished my paddy fields for Vietnam. Just the vanishing to do. Also requiring varnish are my NVA which are done.
I am awaiting a largish order from S&A scenic for my little bit of Spain but I am doing the dead ground pieces myself. I also have load of Spanish buildings to paint.
I'm happy to see that Hovels at still in operation and I shall be buying their factory pieces to use as my special terrain for my Anarchist Militia. I want to put my Spanish church on some elevated ground with a path leading up to it.
Basing still needs doing on my Anarchists.
A bit of work still to do to finish my ACW for the CWB day too. Busy busy busy!
Currently painting the extra bits and bobs needed for our participation game at Vappa. Just finished an Italian flamethrower tankette.
Of course I've got my eye on the new armoured lorries and I'll want to buy lots when the new rules arrive.
I've worked on sorting out my gaming room. I need a new table but lack the ability to build one. It's amazing how much crap that I allow to accumulate in my room to the point where I have a roughly 6" square to work in on a 6'x4' table.
All sorted now though and using some trestle tables for the moment.
Go to Ikea, they do like a street party table about 6x3 ish I have 4 of them for gaming - they are really good quality for price.
Wardy
Sean.
What do you want for your gaming table?
Size?
Storage under?
Shelves under?
Closed storage space?
Leg room?
In the middle of the space or against the wall?
Do you want to be able to keep games setup on it?
Les
I want a 6x4 table, with a short end against a wall. Storage underneath would be nice but not essential. The table will stay up but I'd prefer to be able to take it down if needed. Leg room essential as I like to sit down whilst playing.
Fixing it to the wall is cheap and simple, a sheet 18mm chipboard would make a table top, and the other end could be supported on a cupboard or shelf unit.
i also like to sit down whilst playing. Not averse to standing up now and again, but not for the whole game.
You have to stand up to reach the other side of the table when you make the break through onto your opponent's base line.
Can't say I've ever managed that Les 😂🤣😂🤣
How about a hinge to the wall, then a hinged leg at the other end. That way if can be lifted up and stored up again at the wall if needed or left down if required. It simply!y needs a couple of catches to be able to hold the leg in place.
I am getting my Panzer Brigade 150 force together for the Ardennes day early next year
[attachment deleted by admin]
Very good miles, just ordered 60 ships from Navwar for my planned game for Fisticuffs next year
What period and battle Stewart?
Sean.
How's the new gaming table looking?
Miles good to see the stuff is coming together for the Ardennes.
How will you get your 60 ships on to your Hammin Iron cloth Stewart? Sounds like a good looking game though.
I am in delicate negotiations to use the old dining room table rather than selling it. It's 5x3 son with a board on top would do nicely.
Miles hope you are having fun creating the german / american lookalikes!
Looking forward to see how you're getting on with these units.
Reading into Les, I think just doing 4 jeeps and a H/T as a mobile engineer support would suffice for the disguised American/Germans ? As the were there to blow up bridges or dismantle explosives Ect. Then the other squads would be bog standard Germans in either painted German H/T and trucks or captured US vehicles. Or at least for now. Along with the tanks and maybe some amourmed cars to but see how time goes.
Brigade Commander Otto Skorzeny
The brigade's Panther tanks were disguised as M10 tank destroyers by removing their cupolas and disguising their hulls and turrets with thin sheet metal.
The problem of recognition by their own forces was crucial, and they were to identify themselves by various methods: displaying a small yellow triangle at the rear of their vehicles; tanks keeping their guns pointing in the nine o' clock position; troops wearing pink or blue scarves and removing their helmets; and flashes from a blue or red torch at night.
Should be interesting on table.
I am still working on my Walter Schnaffs units.
Finally basing my Nationalist Regulars then it's the buildings. Oh 24 to paint! Plus building a factory for my Anarchists to defend.
Busy with snowy tree covered hills for the Ardennes day.
Also building a harbour area for my model railway. (When I have time that is!😥)
I quite fancy a game defending the quays in Antwerp as the hordes in grey approach with menacing dirigibles overhead.
Having started listening to the Last Kingdom again on my way home from Weymouth, I've got into a bit of a Viking mood. So tonight I have finally put sails on my viking ships. Skellagrim the Hound now has 5 ships looking rather splendid with which to go a viking in. I am thinking I may do a video battle report with them in. Just need
1. Time
2. energy
If anyone has any spare can you send me some!
Head for the coast and take many deep breaths followed by a brisk walk. It works wonders! :)
Excellent.! Im in Weymouth for the internationally renowned gathering of RFCM devotees at the end of the month. I shall take a daily constitutional along the sea front!
Bonus points for a Nivember dip in the sea!
Nearly finished my SCW armoured trucks. As per Martin's recommendation in have gone for a fictional union with which to daub the side of the big one. The Potteries Workers Union (PWU) Great fun painting these lovely models. I'll post a picture up here and on TMP as time permits.
I've also finished two block houses for my Square Bashing trench games. I always try to get a game of Squarebashing in around Remembrance day so we are playing a late war trench game on Friday loosely based on Passchendale.
A pair of SCW Republican AT guns. Once these are finished, my International Brigade will be ready for our first game of Bayonet & Ideology on the 27th.
Busy getting my camels ready for painting for the Guards camel corp in the Sudan, and finishing, adding the bits I found I was short of for making a couple of companies for the Ardennes day.
More 10mm FPW to vary my Walter Schnaffs armies.
I'm finally out of the dark wilderness, the painting mojo has returned after almost 2 months of sifting through the lead pile and writing, rewriting of Army lists. Managed to finish 9 command bases for PBI, some 1,600th aircraft and a handful of modern AFVs for a spot of recognition training at work.
That sounds like a pretty good haul, Alex - was that all this weekend?
And NINE PBI command bases - what are you working on to go with them?
All today!
TBH the command bases were a touch up to bring some order of regularity to my Brit 8th Army and DAK forces. I personally like to double base command stands for easy ID, by this I mean a standard 30x30 textured and flocked on top of a 40x40 just base coloured with the Name ID at the rear.
It helps to keep Martins sales up😁
Very impressive all in a day!
And yes, it sounds like we all need to chip in to help make up for the sad weather-induced Alumwell debacle :(
Martin did get as far as Yeovil in his quest to the North.
At that point he and his faction returned to base.
He might even do a very small discount for a few days.
But on the other hand good for getting more stuff to the workshop as he was out and about at a very early hour.
Due to my snow induced plan to add 128 more cavalry to my ECW armies (which I'm collecting at Salute) I now have a 'to do' list which needs to be finished before then, so roughly a month to finish the lot. Seems reasonable and achievable.
Two 34 man Covenanter foot regiments, slight problem of having to drill out 24 pikeman's hands for these. Musketeers and command for one unit 60% finished. 12 pike have had their cast pikes cut off, which is no mean task. So I think I am winning on this front.
Another 4 more wagons for my baggage trains, I've got some spare marching drummers so might use a couple to make the wagon bases look a bit more diorama-ish. I've added marching musketeers to some of my other wagon bases, and they have worked quite well. I decided I didn't have enough artillery so both sides are getting some more light guns, so 4 more limbers need painting. Both the limbers and the wagons can be painted and partially based as they require dragoon horseholders as drovers (part of my Salute order).
Lots of standards have been researched and requested. Correct number, and sizes of bases have been ordered too.
Very impressive plans and an admirable "maintenance of the aim", Radar - please share photos of your pre-Salute efforts in due course.
I guess the main question is: how many fingers will you have left after all that drilling...? :)
Seem to be doing a lot of things right now. I am painting some fantasy warships of a similar scale and style to the old Man O War game, currently Dwarven and Orcs from Ral-partha and Chaos Dwarves from Admiralty Miniatures who make some very nice and well cast resin ships as well as 15mm chaos dwarves (which I may have to get!)
As well as this I am painting and making bases for some 1/600 scale aircraft mainly from Tumbling Dice. Both German and British forces. I also have an old HMS Arm Royal I am repainting in the scale and have some destroyers to put together.
Also painting figures for the Walking Dead all out war game.
And painting some Colonial era British and Beja (Fuzzy Wuzzi to those of the non PC brigade. ) tribesmen. So far I have come two units of Somerset shire, one Royal Engineers and one and a bit 1st Highlands as well as a few Logistics Core with mules etc.
On top of this I am still fitting in some railway bits and bobs.
Makes one wonder how on Earth I used to fit working in!!!
Oh yes, also doing some Victorian navy steam/sailing ships also from Tumbling Dice.
Second regiment of Lowlanders completed. Baggage train and limbers also completed as much as I can (need my dragoon horseholders to use as drovers, but they will be in my Salute goody bag). Something that wasn't on my list was the Matchlock surgeon vignette, and the remaining loose halberds (which will be added to some of my open wagons).
Final dozen pikemen have had their pikes trimmed and cleaned off. Not drilled them yet. Still got the correct number of digits on my hands. 8)

Looking very good.
The complete army will look most impressive.
Any particular end goal or are you just enjoying the journey?
Thanks. Just beetling along. I'll get there when I get there. Might never get there, wherever 'there' is. ;)
Actually 'there' is currently a Parliamentarian and a Royalist force each consisting of: 9 x 34 man regiments of foot; 1 x 24 man unit of firelocks,; 2 x 21 man units of dragoons; 12 x 16 man regiments of horse; 4 x light guns, 1 x medium gun, 1 x heavy gun (each gun has a limber); 7 x assorted wagons for a baggage train; an assault party (1 pack of petards/grenadoes); command of 7 generals, a dog and a preacher. Each unit to have a casualty marker with dead person. At the moment the Solemn League is just a token force of 3 regiments of foot and some generals, there should be cavalry eventually, but no command pack in the range (yet). Add to that twenty something buildings, dry stone walls, hedges, trees, rivers and roads, a village full of civilians and plague doctors...
Of course if new packs were to appear in range 20 I'm sure 'there' would move again
I am working on the new version of the M3 half tracks. They will be resin, but now will come with seated men and pulpit gunners with 50 cal MGs.
How are the montagnards coming along.
I thought the premier projet was Western rules.
Prussian infantry for Walter Schnaffs. Hoping to get this to Phalanx this year.
Russian 28mm, and WW1 germans.

My pre-Salute challenge is complete. Greenery to be added to final foot regiment tonight. Still got all my fingers.
More info here:http://www.keepyourpowderdry.co.uk/2018/03/pre-salute-challenge.html?m=1 (http://www.keepyourpowderdry.co.uk/2018/03/pre-salute-challenge.html?m=1)
All that and a full set of fingers too?! Very nice, and clearly worth the effort (the blood and pain will be forgotten once they've won their first fight....).
Once I had worked out how to drill the hands it was a lot easier. Sadly not straightforward drill vertically down jobs (if only). Did lose some skin when I managed to super glue myself to a paintbrush (not exactly sure how that happened, threw the brush away, big chunk of skin stuck to it was a bit of a put off)
Yep they do look good.
What's a bit of skin lost, no pain, no gain!
Seriously they do look good and the whole army will look excellent, with all the bells and whistles.
How have you been taking your pictures that you have been posting?
Thanks.
I tend to use my phone, just because it is handy. Plus I can upload to my blog really easily. The better pictures on my blog are usually taken with my DSLR with a macro lens. (They tend to be better posed, plus I can light the subject much more naturally under artificial lighting. Camera geeks it's a Pentax K3ii, 50mm macro with a Pentax flash bounced off the sloping ceiling.)
To be honest the cameras on smartphones are pretty darn good. The biggest hurdle with them is lighting.
Radar - thanks, that's useful. I have had poor results with a DSLR on a tripod, but guess it's due to my lack of a macro lens.
I too find a smartphone camera to be great, even in low light as there seems to be lots of idiot-proofing software built in!
Currently I am working on some Tjublings from Admiralty Miniatures. They are Swedish and the Tjublings are 15mm Chaos Dwarfs in a similar vein to the 28mm Citadel ones with big hats, but 15mm instead. The big hats make them taller!
Also I am working on some Ice Witch figures from Ral-partha in 15mm. They are slightly bigger than PP figures but not so much.
I am also painting a huge Colonial era British army, 2 redcoat units, 2 Highlander units, 2 Royal Engineers units, 1 dismounted camel corp, 1 logistics core each ten bases, a smattering of Maxim's, cannon, Gardner's, mules, a mounted load of camel corp and also horse cavalry. Loads to do!
A similar quantity of Beja tribesmen but I have not painted them as Mahdist forces as I am a little uncomfortable with the scripts and appearance of the era flags which seem to have a distinct similarity to some current ones from that general area that could be misconstrued and I don't want to be accused of anything remiss in downloading them to print out.
Been doing some more upgrading of my Spanish Civil War forces to the new rules. Just finished Civil Guard to add to my Spanish Foreign Legion, Carlist, International Brigade, Republican Army and Communist Militia. Assault Guards and Nationalist Army to go. Also just finished a ruined bridge objective copied from the new rules.
Hope Sean getting his wargame room finished.
Although it is my intention to complete my BEF force, I did have a go at one base of German infantry this morning, again as an experiment with colour combinations. This time I am working on a black base coat rather than burnt umber.
In many illustrations the German infantry trousers appear to be slightly darker than the jacket (at least in 1914). My reading also suggests that there was a greenish tinge to the field grey jacket. My experimentation led to mixing Vallejo green grey and light grey for the tunic and dark blue grey and light grey for the trousers. I also went for a beige, rather than grey, pickelhaub cover just to provide some variety. Will post of photo of the finished product in a few days to see what people think of the combo of colours.
Finally finished basing and flocking my cowboy force (which I'd started in December) for the Western Day next weekend.
This gives me a whole 5 days to complete my scenery - what could possibly go wrong?
Currently working on Highlanders for my BEF force. After consulting a number of books and websites for inspiration I decided to go for a front apron only with the rear of the kilt painted using the Gordon pattern (or as near as I can muster). I really like the way these highlanders have been modelled.
Currently trying to finish lots of dead people. Managed to knock a load of dead harquebusiers out couple of weeks ago, the foot dead have been undercoated but that's as far as it's got. Keep thinking I'll do those tomorrow but real life keeps getting in the way.
Fortunately the rest of my life is pretend life.
Very pleased to say I've pulled my finger out and got my dead people painted. Halfway through I had an epiphany and decided that there should be specific casualty figures for individual regiments. Some reorganisation and repainting required to match coat colours, and two painted figures were ditched and two dead musketeers (from the spares box) have come into play. Then that led onto labelling casualty marker bases.
Then I had a look at my basing, quite a few things didn't match (mud colourwise) so they got adjusted to match the bulk of the armies. Some standards had there edges painted as there was some white showing where they shouldn't be.
Next up: decide who my generals are and label them (this'll need a good few cups of tea to aid the creative flow), some of my older casualty markers will get there faces and hands repainted (much happier with how I do flesh now), my Naseby Windmill base will need tittervating to match everything else. After all that I have run out of things to do before 128 cavalry.
Most PP rules use casualty markers. I find that if they are mounted on coins players treat them as such and are very careless in the handling. Given 4 casualty markers players often just pile them up in their hand ,whereas 4 bases of infantry would be more respected. Psychology?
I like to see the casualties as it gives the impression of hard fighting. Now i mount them on 2p pieces, the bigger coin helps limit the damage. In addition i do a basic wash finish on a set that i can lend to people who are careless and then less effort is need for repairs.
Having the western rules use wounded whom are kneeing has helped too. A vertical pose gets kinder handling.
I no longer mount casualties on coins but instead use circular Mdf bases, as I found that even in storage, when the coins move about they chip the paint off the figures. The Mdf seems much kinder. I remember my old woodwork teacher telling us that metal should be hit with a metal hammer and wood with a mallet. The mallet always comes off worse when hitting metal.
I like 2p pieces for my casualties, but store them on a magnetic sheet.
This requires a degree of sorting out of magnetic (newer) 2p pieces from the older non-magnetic variety!
Finishing off my terrain tiles for Saturday's Western games. 7 completed and 23 more almost there...
My casualty markers are based on those thick Warbases casualty marker dials.
I like this thread. It's like my conscience, looking over my shoulder reminding me what I have to do. (Plus it seems to spur this idle slacker into action.)
So then Martin, does that mean if we have had figures that are simply washed you consider us to be careless and to heavy handed?😂
Now got the BEF command base up and ready for painting. The Highlanders just need their wash of the magic stuff. Once the command base is complete it will then be time to paint and dress the entire brigade's bases, finish off my Romano-British Saga force, then crack on with von Kluck's boys.
It means, Duncan, that heavy handed gamers get to use my "washed" casualty markers. They have made no casualty figures (otherwise they would not be borrowing mine) of their own, so it is hard to determine how a heavy handed gamer would paint their figures. Probably not at all? Is that good logic?
Markers for the new Pirate sea game
OK they look great Stewart.
so you have Eagles, naval cannons, is it a sail?, and a submarine conning tower, so what do each represent in the game?
A submarine Stewart. That's clever.
Les should have gone to speck savers, they are Sharks from the Pirate range.
At the moment for any testing each ship/boat has a sabot to record its damage.
3 category's to record , sails, guns, crew.
To record the quality of the ship I am using Eagles - battle hardened, sharks - able and no marker for scurvy.
I should have enough for both sides in a full game
Phew! No need to work on submarine rules.
Sharks, we'll be doing jets next and moving into musicals.
Is that West ern story.
Are they eagles or albatross? After all it seems most of the ones I have seen are painted with blue bases which can look a bit sea like, even if mine were supposed to be sky.
I believe that Martin's are sea eagles.
Good to see that the sail markers are on the web site. No code as yet!!!!!!!!!!!
First two (of eight) sixteen man ECW cavalry units practically finished. Just the the trumpeters to finish off, attach the standards and some fancy green stuff to put onto the bases.
Painting the horses isn't the problem, it's the harquebusiers - variations on a theme of brown. Almost makes me want to go and paint Napoleonic Austrians for a bit (variations on the theme of white)
Have just finished my 'Opportunity Fire's markers which we used last night. It is a tricky one to know what to do, put them on the sabot and take them off when you have used it or leave them off and put them on when you have used it. Following the game last night I would prefer to leave off and just put on once you have used it.
Other than this I am continuing with my Tjublings army, I am just basing a unit welding axes.
I am also continuing to make some little ships for pirates and one large warship.
I am currently working on several sticks of Rhodesian Light Infantry. These are a mixture of PP and Old Glory figures including head swaps.
My next venture will be the Rhodesian African Rifles. These fellows will be solely PP figures with PP head swaps. This will make things so much easier as PP figures take next to no time to prep because of their exceptionally high quality.
Third 1914 German unit reaching completion via a few head swaps, this time including pickelhaub as well as feldmutze. Accidentally put a dismounted dragon officer in charge of this infantry unit, then decided he was an infantry officer who had ridden to the battle, so that's why he is wearing spurs. The unit also includes the poor chap who's just had a shell pass through him.
Absolutely nothing, sat at my workbench today, handled some miniatures I glued to a lolly stick about 2 months ago then put them back. Mojo not with me at the moment 🙁
Been there - not to worry, it will return, but most likely not to the guys on the lolly sticks (I have 24 half painted 1870 Prussian uhlans sitting on my painting rods having been royally usurped first by the BEF and then by their grandsons).
Getting the pirate stuff going for play testing.
Late War Germans for next year's Arnhem battle. First up: StuGs and Pak 40s.
http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=17577&page=3
Currently making a flying bull / chaos dwarf hybrid thingy (Lamussa? Something like that, can't remember the spelling.) As a mount for a general/hero in my Tjubling army.
Also remaining the railway and making a couple more dice towers as well as an island for pirates.
Lots to do, then got to get back to finish off thev1/300 scale ECW stuff.
Just completing the rebased WWI jaegers, whilst cleaning up the German dragoons ready to start painting.
Managed to distract myself from death by brown paint *, I have fallen down a wormhole that is Scots Covenators. A unit of lancers, and some frame guns. Spent ages trying to source appropriate pack horses. Of course they need appropriate casualty markers so I've been playing around doing casualty marker headswaps. All ready for some paint this weekend.
* realised that I had used 12 different shades of brown painting 2 units of parliamentarian cavalry. So I stalled. Six more of those still to do...
Death by hodden grey paint then?
Ha. Yes I guess you are right there
Now into the German dragoons, just for a laugh I thought I would go with pink piping - livens up the field grey and brown leather, so now I will have pink German dragoons for the SYW, the Wars of German unification and WWI.
Half of death by brown paint completed (4 regiments of Parliamentarian horse - 64 figures); 4 regiments of Royalist horse to go.

That is the last of my Salute 2018 swag, once that is complete I can reward myself with a star fort at Vapnartak and start a shopping list for Salute!
Those are really nice, and bring out the sculpted detail well.
Certainly worth those 12 shades of brown :)
Where did you get that flag from ?
Thanks. Pretty sure I made it to 14 shades of brown in total. (Bought some more for some reason.)
All my flags are from Maverick Models. They are fabric, really like them. A number of my flags aren't listed on the website yet, as Stuart made them on my instruction.
Currently working on cowboys that I had for years but never finished. Western has reinvigorated my interest. Finished off the plains Indians the other week. Once the cowboys are complete I have some townsfolk to finish and then all done.
Wow just looked at Maverick Models website, some great union flags there as well as others.
I am working on a modern British Team Yankee force for a games day in December at Entoyment.
Then I must get back to doing British tanks for the Beachhead assault games next year. Finish off some Churchill Funnies and Shermans.
I use the fabric flags, in smaller sizes I recommend not having the shading effect applied. The fabric flags need preparing with a 50/50 water/PVA mix, then allow to dry. Trim and fit.
Stuart is very helpful, he must be sick of me sending him flag graphic files...

Beautiful figures as always, Radar. What paints did you use for the helmets?
Thanks Mike. All the armour is Foundry 'blackened barrel' with a Citadel nuln oil wash.
They do look very good indeed, as do the scenic items.
Many thanks for your kind words.
Buildings are Hovels, one on the far left has an added PP pub sign (from sprinkles pack), roads by Fat Frank (fleabay), and the fields are by Timecast.
Final unit will be based tomorrow, just got in from a trip to Bovington and Stonehenge (from the Peak District).
Just doing a Team Yankee British Force for a Mega at Entoyment in December. The wonders of doing Head Swaps and a bit of Green Stuff to make "Hairy Helmets" foliage on top ! Some the figures are Battle Fronts and other are Martins PP ranges. US Marines and others.

Very nice Miles. Can you say what camera and setting you use to get those really good close ups please.
Looking very good, Miles. I hope you'll share some photos of the whole force, once finished?
iPhone 8. Just got close with it, expanding the screen. It is a really got camera on that phone. The best they have done so far.
Yes I will once I ve finished them. I am quite happy with the colours this time. I ve been playing with the colour combination, so the wash doesn't take the camouflage out.
Here are some of the PP converted figures.

Painting up some more 3mm pp ACW figures for Altar of Freedom.
iphone 8 sounds expensive. I have iphone 3. is the camera that much better??
The cameras on the latest smartphones are pretty top notch spec, they also have very good software that does all the hard work for you. My phone takes better pictures in the dark than my DSLR on automatic setting.
I've found the same as Radar - smartphones are great for the average wargames photo.
This is all good news for The 15 Mill, no shortage of pictures for the game reports.
I didn't see any from the campaign play testing Simon.

Aie!
:)
But it would be a great picture and show the age range that PP games are suitable to be played by.
There are lots of the old f.. playing.
I painted up my late war Squarebashing Germans and British for my Somme game a couple of years ago. At the time I wasn't sure whether to add flock to their bases or go for the mud and blood look. I opted for grass in the end. However on a recent outing for them at the Amiens game at the Burton club I was struck with how glaring the green was. Not particularly liking the effect I decided to get rid of it and go for a more earthy tone.
This shows what I started with and what I was aiming for.
First job was scraping off as much of the static grass as possible.
I then applied a textured paint from Games Workshop that they sell for basing. There are several variants of this and I have to say it's great. I did the whole army and still have some left although admittedly I wasn't covering the whole base with the stuff just the bits where the grass had been.
A tray full of Hun covered in mud. It only took a couple of hours to do 14 regiments of infantry, 12 MGs, 9 gun bases plus a load of casualties and half bases. I'm rather please with the effect . Onto the British now.
Looking good, Sean - I'm now glad I didn't flock my British in the end!
I did do a light-coloured drybrush on mine, and was quite pleased with that effect.
Yes I may add a light drybrush too but I'll do the British first and see how I feel.
It's a great effect as you've got them anyway. Funny how flocking normally improves things but, particularly in your shot of the tray of figures, it seems here that less is most definitely more in this instance - the mud really helps to show off the figures.
Good luck with the Brits!
They all look really good Sean, so how many SB armies have you now?
Just the 6! Early and late war for British French and German. I do want to get a brigade of Belgians at some point as well as do the RCW and I'm very tempted with a couple of Balkans Wars armies as o did the lists for them.
Those do look good. Chapeau!
Mud feels right, but having seen the colourified WW1 film, I was surprised how much greenery there was (not lush fields by any stretch of the imagination). Sort of went against the mental image I have.
Yes the 1st day of the Somme was apparently quite a green landscape and there are amounts of soldiers walking through knee high grass. I imagine the area around the German lines was quite churned up though after all the preparatory shelling.
Look good Sean, does your game mat reflect your new basing?
I have a brown felt cloth that I have sprayed and 'muddied' up. Looks ok!
Seeing as my new themed casualty markers have arrived, I've had to put the two regiments of Royalist horse to one side. Horses have been basecoated, tails, manes and points done.
Somewhere in the region of 80 casualty figures have been taken from their old markers and glued on their appropriate new marker bases. Might touch up any damaged paint jobs tonight, add scenics over the course of tomorrow and Friday.
I have been working on these today, additions for my AK forces.
Just need to to let them dry and then final touch up and dry brushing.
Peter P doesn't make these anymore... been on my to do list for a very long time.

These casualty markers look really good, great idea well executed.
Thanks.
Yes like those. Good pun Les, with "executed"!
Thanks, indeed it was.
Next task avoidance activity, cleaning up and preserving a demi-culverin cannonball recovered from Marston Moor.
Somehow my goal is to complete 4 regiments of Royalist horse before Christmas. Only then can I contribute to the Peter Pig pension pot by adding 5 regiments of foot (including drilling out more lowland pike hands :( ) and a little bit more ordinance. And a star fort.
Very nicely done, Radar!
And there must be some kind of story behind your cannonball?
Thanks.
Alas no interesting story behind the cannonball. Purchased from a metal detectorist
But a story could be woven?
Sadly the relative I know about who lived at the time was Parliament's treasurer of Lancashire, so a bureaucrat rather than a contender for having his leg/arm knocked off by the said cannonball.
If only it was Napoleonic! Another relative was a real life Sharpe: Wellington conferring a field commission on him due to daring do.
Cannonball complete. From this:

By my reckoning it is from a demi-culverin: weight (9lb) and diameter fit with weight and bore from period artillery tables.
Now back to death by brown paint
That's impressive - Hammerite?
Nope, gentle wire brushing on worst bits of corrosion, then soft brush. Quick spray of Waxoyl, then a buff with a soft cloth.
I asked a friend (archaeologist) best way to preserve without wrecking it.
Well it's very impressive. I guess you don't want to be dropping it on your foot...
Thanks.
Absolutely not. What damage could a solid 9lb cannonball do? I'd have said probably a bit, not massive amounts of damage. I've reappraised that notion.9lbs in such a small object: it feels a lot heavier than you think it should, dropping it from table height would make a mess of the floor so I hate to think what it would do fired out of a cannon.

I have been working on some conversions for my Chaos Dwarf army. I have uploaded photos to my flickr accountvand made them public.
My most recent is an armoured Bull Centaur Sourcerer and a squad of Chaos Dwarf Lancers mounted on mechanical steam powered chairs.
These are all 15mm.
I have finished a mountain tribe force for Vietnam and today a few British Charaters for My 25mm Rorks Drift game on Saturday at the Weymouth games weekend.
The mountain tribes can double as Natives against the Pirates at the weekend until I get the native painted

They look determined and neat. Good work that man. If i were in America I would say "awesome".
They look terrific. Hope I can do the same kind of justice to mine.
Many thanks. Thankfully a good wash makes amends for a shoddy paint job.
'A Good wash' has been my painting mantra for a good few years now.
It's ironic that by staying true to history ECW cavalry are various shades of brown. I found this when painting up my Regiment of Foote armies. And being the ECW you certainly need a lot of cavalry.
They look really excellent. I'll remain stolidly English and also refrain from calling them awesome. But that's what they are!
Thanks. The last of my Salute 2018 swag.
Once the Sconce has been finished, it's back to drilling the hands out of lowland pike, and putting Scots bonnets on regular pike (for the dastardly Newcastle's regiment of white coats).
Very nice Radar - they did turn out well!
Mind your fingers when drilling out all those pikes...
Thanks, hopefully I'll keep my fingers intact. (I writ some destructions on how best to attack each pose). Fingers crossed, but obviously not whilst using a pin vice.
Sconce completed. Rubbish picture, looks much better in daylight

I think I shall do artillery next
Wowzers! What are the dimensions?
Base, if my memory serves me right, is 400mm × 300mm.
I'll put better pics up on the blog tomorrow, it looks awful under artificial lighting. Contrast between the stonework colours is really stark. Plus it needs some figures manning the walls.
Ming Chinese force for Dragon Rampant.
Cavalry, Temple Lions, Qilin complete.

What's the best way to post photographs?
Hello Steve - and welcome to the Forum.
We don't encourage folk to attach photos directly to posts (as it eats up memory that has to be paid for), but rather prefer links to photos hosted elsewhere.
A lot of people have used PhotoBucket. I and some others use TinyPic (which has the added benefit of not even having to log in). There are many other options, and you may of course have your own blog or server.
Does this help?
Simon
Yes very helpful, I'll look into getting myself some cloudspace.
Excellent - I should add that tinypic.com is also free :)
TinyPic isn't uploading right now, so instead a bit about the overall Dragon Rampant push.
Being an admirer of Daniel Mersey's rules, I bought Dragon Rampant, read through them and then let it lie for around 6 months.
Later - browsing for figures for something completely different I started hitting interesting anomalies in otherwise historical ranges.
Da Vinci glider (Ral Partha), Da Vinci Tank and Japanese Yokai (A&A), Flying Carpets (Peter Pig and Essex).
They kicked off an "I wonder how they'd look in Dragon Rampant" itch that turned into a mission.
It took about a week to compile credible stats for a Tank and Flying carpet.
I then started to wonder what lists these would fit in with - not being much of a Renaissance (Gaming) man this required a bit of light reading.
I came away with the understanding that the 16th century (1500-1600) included some pretty interesting world events.
This led to a daisy chain of world powers who were partially in contact, through neighbour borders, trade or exploration contacts.
Time to compile some lists.
The first lists were Japanese (with or without Yokai) from the age of war, and an Italian force supported by some Leonardo gadgets.
There clearly would not meet of fight, which is where various adjacent cultures got drawn in.
This, in turn saw be scratching through each of these culture's myths and legends to provide some fantastic support for their comtemporary armies.
About 6 weeks in I had compiled this list of armies - each with proposed Dragon Rampany lists:
1 Japanese Yokai
2 Sengoku Japanese
3 Ming China
4 Indonesian or Malay
5 Mughal
6 Rajput
7 Southern Hindu Indian
8 Indian Legendary Creatures
9 Ottoman Expansion
10 Abyssinian
11 Somali
12 Colonial Portuguese
13 Da Vinci Early Renaissance
14 Colonial Venice
15 Knights of St John
16 Henry VIII English
I've ordered several of these armies and am in th eprocess of painting the Ming Chinese, Somali and Portuguese.
I expect the whole endeavour to last me several years.
I read this a few years ago now, but what always catches my imagination is the inside cover. Go on admit it if money was no constraint in model purchases who wouldn't want to replicate this at 1:1 scale. Erm darling you know that loft conversion we talked about?

Looking good. Also painting up Covenanters but for The Pikeman's Lament. No doubt someone else has also tried this but, for a bit of variety (and I know you can buy heads - but I don't have a drill), I've also converted 3 ECW figures by shaving off their hats and carefully attaching a flattened blob of Milliput - worked out very well, too, if I say so myself. Will try to post an image later when I've finished them. :)
Be good to see your altered heads.
@Radar - very nice (as always!)
@Westie - actually a drill may not be the best option in any case: pin vice (just a few pounds) will probably do the job better, if you do decide to save yourself the hassle of sculpting heads from scratch. But I'm also looking forward to seeing your results!
Many thanks Colonel. Just been cutting pikes off Covenanters. Can't face drilling hands now, plus Luther is about to start on the idiot's lantern.
Just 4 regiments of foot (32 figures and a casualty each) to do before Vapnartak and then I can have two new dragoon regiments 8)

In which case you'll be very happy with the new packs #73 and #74, pictures of which have just arrived today ;)
I've been checking daily for them (slightly sad admitting that), checked earlier and they weren't up. Nice they too.
That's my Vapnartak pre-order sorted then
Lovely starfort Radar. I'm currently working on 3mm forts and earthworks for the ACW - Fort Donelson AoF scenario to be precise, but also to be used in the Corinth scenario as well.
Cheers Leman. Today I have been distracted by pictures of Fort Bourtange in the Netherlands. Stunning star fort

Ref. converting ECW English musketeers to Covenanters: Now finished painting and basing so (hopefully) here are the results ....
Wow - I'd forgotten that you'd sculpted those heads yourself - they look very Piggy-like ;)
Well done - that's an excellent outcome !
Those musketeer conversions are top. Well done.
Out of interest what are the buildings in the background of the second picture?
Thanks, guys. Unfortunately, I wish I had the skill to re-do the heads but actually it was only the hats. I shaved down the caps/hats in small increments with a craft knife then added a small blob of Milliput which I flattened into a bonnet shape using a cocktail stick and the point of the craft knife for tools. It took me a couple of attempts with one of the figures. When the Milliput was set, I then used an emery board 'borrowed' from Mrs Westie to smooth off the results (I think I went too far with one of them). They seem to blend in quite well so, all in all, quite happy with the results myself.
The buildings are from my SYW 10mm collection (my 15mm buildings are ACW period) and are manufactured by Battlescale and Total Battle Miniatures. Battlescale don't do 15mm but Total Battle Minis do WW2 'Skirmish,' Black Powder 'Big Battalions' and Fortifications and some scenics in 15mm. Here is the link:-

Really struggling to paint at the moment. Clearly lost my mojo. Just finished 18 riderless dragoon nags, awful experience. Didn't enjoy it. It really was going through the motions. The dragoons themselves have been undercoated and their jackets blocked in. They might stay in that condition for a while.
Strange , visited Les Invalides a couple of weeks ago, came out inspired and knocked out a couple of Confederation of the Rhine battalions. Enthusiasm quickly ebbed. Maybe Napoleonics suck the life out of me? Or is it the prospect of about 1500 assorted Napoleonic figures waiting to be painted?
ECW project coming to a bit of an end could be the problem too. Although I have reorganised storage and have space for another 6 regiments of foot and 12 regiments of horse. (But can I face death by brown paint again?)
Salute is on the horizon, looking forward to going, but the shopping list is empty.

So, you might want to look at Pirates? You can play the new ship game at Salute and buy a bunch of land game figures (like ECW, but simpler to paint) to take home with you :)
Three things on the go at the moment, all 15mm: two versions of a Leonardo tank, one pedal power, like his drawing, the other wind powered like a vast landship, and two heavyish Renaissance cannon and crews (same type of gun so I've counted them as one).
Just thinking, I bought the Landship at Northern Militaire, or Phalanx, in the early 90s and it's been sat in its box waiting for the right moment.
Painting up regimental command stands for my ACW collection to change the ID of units.
Preparing to work on POE sea actions by sorting out flags for ships, but will be painting the ships when they arrive (later today).
Currently working on some ECW

I find putting the texture and base colours on a real chore. Greenery is different - my favourite bit of the process, makes everything come alive. Particularly ECW cavalry which are just exercises in variations in the use of brown paint until they are based.
I am rebasing at the moment, most especially two more Peter Pig Renaissance guns and the Renaissance ox drawn wagon, originally painted up a couple of decades ago. I actually really enjoy the basing process. It takes a couple of days owing to the wait for various stages to dry, but the results are really worthwhile. Just completed several command groups for the same period, French and Italian, but off on holiday tomorrow so no more posts for a week.
When you're back, maybe you could share some basing secrets, Leman? Perhaps even for inclusion in The Mill?
Meanwhile, have a great time away!
Thanks. Walking up in Hadrian's Wall country. Think there is some stuff on basing in an article I've done for The Mill 2, but would certainly be willing to go into more depth in the future.
have a nice holiday Andy. Do take some piggy dice. You never know what opportunities may arise.
Hadrian's Wall - never been there. Quite jealous.
No pre-Salute challenge this year, but I have started painting the figures from the spares box who will be joined by my Salute swag (thereby creating a couple of companies of firelocks and lots of Covenanter units).
It's quite strange painting up a mix of figures from different units. English musketeers and command, Scots lowland pike and command, Scots lancers and harquebusiers. Normally it's paint an entire unit in one batch. So this is quite a novel experience.
I am back, after some interesting sights, and sites, up in Wall country.

Currently working on an expansion to my Scots Covenanters: a regiment of harquebusiers, two of lancers, two of foot, and Fraser's dragoons. So that's lots of headswaps (46 completed so far), lots of pikemen's hands drilled out, and lots and lots of different shades of grey and brown.
Currently rebasing and padding out some Italian pike and arquebus to make them compatible with Furioso, Basic Impetus 2 and To the Strongest.
Rebased some PP WWI Belgians and Germans and AWI Hessians, plus 10mm AWI Officers and some 15mm Ogres, now my paint desk is clear.
That is a most unusual situation. You must be incredibly disciplined.

Cleared my ECW pile, not having a 'to do' pile hasn't lasted very long (about 2 weeks). 96 clubmen, almost all with headswaps are waiting patiently. First batch of 24 have new heads and are ready for some paint.
I'm sure you will have something to paint soon Stewart
Currently painting some ECW soon to be followed by pirates.
I think my painting pile will last me well into my retirement

That's what I ve been working on all year so far. It's taken me longer than expected, but also a lot more tanks than I expected to do. But very satisfying as I ve now done more than enough Engineering tanks for most wargamers now. I ve got the Churchill Bridgelayer that Airfix do, to convert and make as well as Crocodiles with Culin Hedgerow device to make in the near future. Also a Sherman BARV for the beaches.
These will be at our Gold Beach game at Bovington this Saturday and Saturday 27th at Entoyment, where we are havin the full battle, as the Bovington show we will be starting at turn 3. Otherwise the paying public will see a lot of Sand and not many tanks...

If anyone wants to play a turn or too at Bovington? Or come and join myself, Martin, Rob, Stewart and Colin at Entoyment? Please do?
The Gold beach (Miles, Mike, Colin) Entoyment D day event game is 27th July 2019.
10mm SYW Prussian Black hussars at the moment.
I'm still chugging through my Late War German WW2 force, realising that:
a) there are more different colours on Germans than on their opponents, so things take a bit longer
b) buying enough figures for almost all company list permutations was probably not a wise move.
Just purchased some early WW1 French (PP of course) and got the first batch cleaned up and undercoated the first batch. All ready to start painting when I'm back from my hols.

Right now working on 10mm SYW Prussian cuirassiers, but have just ordered a small pack of 15mm Lurkio British Home Service figures to compare with PP WWI Germans. If suitable I'll then expand with some of the Canadian Pill box heads on Sudan British.
Currently working on some PP Pirates as well as a few 15 Arab cavalry to supplement my Abbasid army. Also need to do the large ships for PoE, so all in all quite busy.
As for what to do after those.............massive heap of lead to get through but I think it may be 10mm FPW basing.
Ah Noggin, a fascinating conflict and some wonderful 10mm figures available for it. I am using a variety of those (but mostly Pendraken and Red Eagle) in my Walter Schnaffs armies.
Figures for PITS for the WWW.
Also just boxing off some 6mm Central European buildings - masses of woodwork and with washing I can only work on one face at a time. Once these and a couple more 10mm units done for the SYW club campaign I can get back to 15mm - WWI Belgians.

I've not long ago started an early 18th century Ottoman army, for a long term campaign my gaming mates and I are planning to run next year.
Such campaign will be loosely based on the real 7th Ottoman-Venetian War (1714-1718), and will somehow be a continuation to a what-if Late WSS campaign whose aftermath gave a slightly different end of war.
It's a somewhat complicate but very fun kind of campaign (imho), with a main narrative in storytelling form giving alibis for the players to run either wargaming or RPG scenarios, or even small campaigns. I'm ruling it from a blog (https://defiant-principality.blogspot.com/ (https://defiant-principality.blogspot.com/)). It's in Catalan language mainly, although I also run some sort of English translation in another forum with a wide Imagi-nations section (Fife&Drum Minis).
Beautiful paint job Radar! They look superb!
Many thanks Ivan
PP ACW figures, plus a few other types, in order to try out the new F6 C19th rules. Went through my box of unpainted ACW figures and pulled out all the PP ones to try and give an overall 'look' to the finished product. My first base is a unit of ragged union troops using some PP and a few others. These figures were already painted, so I rebased for ease and speed of movement using a base from Simon Miller (TtS), listed as FK&P14e:
(https://scontent-lht6-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/71703776_174784693680799_3655239180050497536_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_oc=AQlDZ1WTJ-34dahNQSnlRmseAhFmhDgycKodPRqhoYxD7L_t4RJcA-WNgJWk5BXMcezEiZ14To4Q5IVHywyC7JF9&_nc_ht=scontent-lht6-1.xx&oh=33ea498ee60e0c29e88dfc4d68560c88&oe=5E327215)
I have spent the last couple of weeks also painting up 8 Confederate infantry command sets from PP with a v to these becoming Cleburn style western theatre units with the distinctive blue flag with white disc. The flags, available from Wargame Vault, are very accurate (10 in all for Cleburn's division) and are in larger size for gamers who like big flags on their figures and also historically accurate size (in reality these flags were quite small). They are also historically accurate in that the battle honours and unit distinctions only appear on the obverse of the flag. The first single base Confederate unit unit, a firing line, is almost complete.
Those are nice Leman. I really like the uneven edge to those FK&P bases. If I was starting afresh I think I'd utilise them
Today I am channeling my inner King Théoden "so it begins".
First batch of 21 headswaps. Only another 63 to do after this.

Wardy, unfortunately Simon Miller, of the Big Red Bat Shop, has sold out of the bases that Simon used. He sent me a very nice response to my order by saying that he did not expect to get any more in for some time, if ever. He did however point me to the FK&P14e base which he sells, then sent me by way of comparison the last TtS base of the size used by Simon that he had, and the FK&P base to see if it would make a good substitute. It did and I ordered a goodly number - only for infantry and dismounted cavalry though. I will order some deeper ones for mounted troops and keep my artillery on 30x40mm.
Here is the FK&P14e base on top of the TtS base. The width is approximately 90mm. There is also a second photo to show how the FK&P bases can slot together, making storage easier, plus there are holes for rare earth magnets.

Now working on some MDF storage trays from Commission Figures to fit in my RUB boxes. Just completed two 50mm depth and a 40mm depth which fit neatly into a RUB 9L box. The dividers in the trays split them into three equal sections into which my newly based ACW figures fit perfectly. My aim is to have all the figures in the two 50mm trays with the gaming paraphernalia in the top tray - one box to cover a complete game, with the mat and rules, charts etc in a bag. I would like to do this with a number of games, Bloody Barons 2 being my next target.
That sounds neat, Andy - would you be able to share a photo, please? I'm painfully conscious that my storage space is rapidly running out...

I've got a couple of those that I used for paint storage, discarded the inner dividers. Since had a re-reorganisation and they are now a 'work in progress' box, and a useful stuff that fits under the computer monitor box. They are pretty nifty. Although I do prefer the Sally 4th warchest figure storage boxes.

Thanks for sharing, Radar. So, in your set-up below, you can't stack the boxes inside the Really Useful Boxes - they're just standalone MDF trays, effectively?
The warchests are stand alone stackable things. Come in a number of different heights. Lids available separately. They now make versions with perspex front panels or perspex lids. Some come lined with magnetic sheet if that's your thing. Well worth a look if you need to sort out storage.

Leman & Radar, very interesting solutions. At the moment I'm thinking in buying a small chest of drawers that would fit under my workbench for storing all my hobby related stuff and I'm designing a paint rack to replace my current one because it's too small.
Ivan,
For your chest of drawers, have you looked at Muji stacking units? They're lightweight and robust: I use a couple of the smaller ones to store my painting clobber:

Many thanks Andy - that does look to be very space efficient.
And the FK&P bases I am using slot together to provide more stability in transit. They also have six holes for rare earth magnets, so I have the option of a layer of steel sheet on the bottom of each tray as well.

Ivan,
For your chest of drawers, have you looked at Muji stacking units? They're lightweight and robust: I use a couple of the smaller ones to store my painting clobber:
https://www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?lan=uk&ShopSel=y&sec=9&sub=38&gclid=eaiaiqobchmir7rb1sue5qivgbttch0nqheeaayasaaegl0xdbwe
Availability is obviously somewhat dependent on which country you live in.
Simon
Thanks for the suggestion, but where I live in is the big problem here. This is the one I will pick up on Monday: https://imgur.com/UFMMzU3
It's supposed to be 70cm tall so will fit nice and tight under my workbench/desk.
Ivan,
That is one serious chest of drawers!
Incidentally, if you select the BBCode link from Imgur (adjacent to the image), you can post the picture directly into your Forum posts, like this:

There's a niggling little notion in my head that what I really need is a lovely antique oak chest that I could put all my ECW storage boxes and buildings in.
Sadly they don't sell such things at IKEA, or anywhere else (well at IKEA prices anyway).
Sounds like an auction might be your best bet - sometimes things just slip through the net and go at a good price. It certainly would enhance a collection to store it in a period-style box.

Ivan,
That is one serious chest of drawers!
Thanks! But it's just laminated MDP that I will have to assemble myself with my close to zero experience in assembling furniture. ;D ;D
I have also used the Commission storage boxes - good range of depths although I don't always put the dividers in as this reduces the storage base for figures.
I do now tend to line my boxes with steel paper and use magnetised bases - either magnetic tape cut to size for older bases or neo magnets in newer bases as I tend to buy ones with pre-made holes.
I must say though, I do prefer the warbases boxes as they are crenellated and allow for easier stacking.
I am working on my casualty markers for my BB army.
Having discovered a distant relative fought in the ECW naturally I need to represent his unit. This has had massive repercussions upsetting the balance of my armies. So as a result I am currently working out what figures need purchasing to add another 6 regiments of horse and 3 regiments of foot to both the Parliamentarian and Royalist causes. Then I've got to store them somewhere, and flags, and coat colours, work out how many bases I need...
With the enlargement I'm going to need more staff officers.
Currently painting up some 15mm French knights from the Joan of Arc game. Very nicely moulded plastic figures. Picked up three sets from Ebay - the Core box, Reliquary box and Siege box.
The Joan of arc is particularly interesting because not many 15mm kick starter activities out there. Do please show some pictures when done.
Will do. It is a huge 100 Years war historical/fantasy project.
Did these as generic French knights for the actual game (which is why the bases have not been textured). Very few 15mm plastics out there and these are good (although not as historically accurate as the PP WOR range). To be honest the lower ranks seem more historically accurate, particularly the infantry. There is also an absolutely belting siege set with bombards, culverins, trebuchets. ballistas, engineers, hand gunners, wheeled mantels, siege tower, battering ram etc and the best wargames castle I have yet seen.

Looking good, Andy. I can't wait to see photos of the castle and siege engines!
They look great Leman! Can't wait to see the rest.
This reminds me that I had the idea that maybe the theme for a future gamette for the 15mill could be jousting! You need minimal terrain, just a strip of land and a fence. And just two figures. Although the current knights would need some resculping and I have no idea how much that would take. Anyway, just an idea.
Those are really nice. Are they plastic, resin or metal?
These are unusual being plastic 15mm. The plastic is harder than Airfix, but not as brittle as the current crop of 28mm plastic figures. This was done deliberately to prevent swords, spears etc. snapping.
A quick look at a very small part of the siege pack ( eg. there are 4 long walls, 12 short walls, 2 gatehouses and 6 towers, excluding those on the gatehouses and keep, as well as multiple siege engines, collapsed wall sections etc.). Everything is made in very sturdy plastic.

Ooh - those do look nice!
To my untutored eye, the castle looks reasonably "historical" (for a French one) - what's your more educated view, Andy?
And also, does the plastic need any special treatment for pain to stick?
I also thought it looked pretty historical, and the designers are French, this being a French game (which appears to garner most sales on the USA). Many years ago I read that to successfully paint Airfix figures first paint on a thinned coating of PVA. For the knights I actually mixed a little PVA in with my primer and this appears to have been quite successful. For the castle I will first give it a good wash in warm washing up deterrent to remove any grease, but as it is grey I will do most of it with a straight black wash with a little dry brushing afterwards. I will also paint the wooden sections and roof tiles before the wash and again dry brush after.
Meanwhile I have now gone back to the ACW figures for the forthcoming Rocket 6 game, concentrating on 20 advancing PP Confederates to make the front rank of two or three more units.
Wow that set looks good. Who makes that ? Then ? Please.
Miles
It looks as though Mythic Games [https://www.mythicgames.net/en/] are bringing out separate expansions too: Teutonic Knights; Men at Arms with dinky little round shields (archers without their bows?); Hussite Wagon-style archers...
These will become available when the pledge manager opens in a couple of weeks for late pledges, expansion packs and so on.
After trying out the Joan of Arc figures I have gone back to sorting out the ACW figures for Rocket Six play testing. This time it is the 6th and 7th Arkansas, Govan's brigade, Cleburne's Division, stepping forward to action. Once again I have used figures that have been in my collection for about three decades, enhanced by PP command and enthusiastic sergeant encouraging the men forward. He is from the older ACW range, but looks good in frock coat and civilian hat. That's three units done for the Confederates now, with two more currently on the painting desk and enough in the wings to get me to 9. What I want now is the Pat Cleburne figure and those Yankee campers for my Johnny Rebs to overrun.

At last a unit with a front rank of freshly painted Peter Pig figures - more for Cleburnes division - the 5th and 13th Arkansas of Govan's brigade.

Miles, sorry I missed your question about the castle. It is produced by Mythic Games for their Joan of Arc Kickstarter figure boardgames. If you have a look on eBay you may be able to find one at a reasonable price. It includes all the siege equipment as well as the castle itself. To avoid horrific US postage and customs charges search under Time of Legends Joan of Arc UK.
They look good Andy. Still rather taken with the bases. No. Mustn't think like that. I am NOT rebasing all of my ECW figures.
No, indeed. My FPW troops are staying on their four one inch bases, but I would like to develop my WOR armies using TtS bases, which will work rather well with BB 2nd edition.
The 3rd Confederate freshly completed. I am really pleased with the way that the Hardee flags from Wargame Vault are giving my Confederate force a real sense of cohesion, despite the variations in uniform. I also appreciate the way that the PP figures are sculpted to take detail and wash. This is particularly noticeable in the officer's rank markings and the drum.

Very nice. Well done on patterned blanket rolls, that's the sort of thing I'm not brave enough to attempt
Don Troiani painted a great picture of an episode in the battle of Franklin showing Confederates with patterned blanket rolls, which I based these chaps on.
As I have finished my 2019 'to paint' pile, I've started on 2020's.
17 casualty markers painted, three test pikemen done (to see if trayned bande buffe looks any good). Spares box looking pretty empty now.
48 packs of cavalry ordered (and a few foot too).
Good progress there Radar. I am currently working on the 11th Indiana in the uniform they actually fought in - a very subdued all blue zouave style, but kepis and only the command in zouave pantaloons. I have found that confederates in kepi make very good stand-ins for Union western zouaves. Photo to follow in a couple of days once finished and based up.
Has anyone lost their painting mojo? Only I seem to have more than I should have.
The 2020 pile has been reduced by 2/4 foot regiments (34 men per unit), and 3/12 regiments of horse (16 per unit). Plus another casualty marker (bringing the total up to 18), and a clubmen vignette for a commission. Need to slow down or there will be nothing left to paint in the calendar year 2020.
I am working on my Western Force. I am doing an Army/Cavalry force, and using spare troops from my Pile made up of Mainly Peter Pig remainders of Essex starter sets and other makes thrown in over the years to make an Confederate Army.
Early next year I will start on the Terrain. Making an Apache style fort and Foreign Legion style fort (both based on the Airfix designs) to fit on 12 x 6 templates with gates going thru and thru.
Great way to reduce my lead pile, and use up some of those odd figures and poses I ve found in my box !

I'm documenting my progress in my YouTube channel which I ought to link here :D
It's early war Germans and Wars of the Roses in the main. Fortunately after a loft clear out I have found a few stashed away projects or else left overs from old projects that should keep me going.
I've also just taken advantage of the 50% off sale at Plastic Soldier Company and bought their Battle of Britain board game plus a bag of 120 1/300th WW2 aircraft for £6.50. That's just over 4p a plane including Dornier, Heinkals and Spitfire. No 109's though.

I saw that they had heavily discounted this at Warfare. It made me very pleased I'd bought into the Kickstarter, and then couldn't get my head around the rules...
Currently working on preparing half bases and casualty bases for Bloody Barons 2. For half bases I have gone entirely with archers to start with, although i will have to prepare some cavalry ones at some stage. Plans are afoot in the club to play Kingmaker using BB2 for the battles.

I've watched a couple of play throughs on YouTube so hoping that will help.
I've had the original game and the PSC upgrade. It's an enjoyable game.
Busy sorting out and re basing for French and Indian wars. I seem to have a number of figures, a local village has asked the club to put on a 'french' battle in the form of a war game.
And also sorting out my Peninsula war Napoleonic, British, Spanish, Portuguese, French.
I have finally got around to prime some scratch built buildings.
I hope to have them painted this week.
Also started painting the PP Vickers plus crew you can see in the background.

Wow - that's a clever trick!
I've been quite busy lately, building from a start an entire 15mm Ottoman army for a planned 1714-1718 Ottoman-Venetian war.
As my 2019 purchases budget is very narrow, I've taken advantage of as many figures as I've been able to pick up from my unpainted lead mountain to start (whatever the actual relationship to the Ottomans) - mainly using these for building irregular units, such the following couple of Azab warbands:
When going for cavalry or regular foot, then I've certainly used specifical figures such as those from Legio Heroica (IT) - in the Sipahis case below, the unit was completed with some PP Fantasy non-arabs:
Or using a mix from Legio Heroica and Wargamer.pl (PL), like in this provincial regular infantry, or Tüfekçi regiment:
I don't know how, I've even found a little time to start a long awaiting project, that of refurbishing my ACW Confederate army, with a first regiment retouched up and rebased:
All these and a couple else in the last couple of months (I've become quite productive lately! ;D)
Some photo reviews in my blog: https://soldadets.blogspot.com/ (https://soldadets.blogspot.com/) (Catalan language there mainly, sorry!)
They look great Lluis, and the flags add a whole extra dimension - thanks for sharing!
Simon
Yes lovely work on those.
Just painted the Vapnartak freebie 28mm Viking berserker. Don't worry, haven't gone over to the dark side. It was an exercise in becoming better at painting. It was surprisingly enjoyable, mainly because I could see the blooming thing! I was playing with different washes, dry brushing, layering and highlighting. Didn't come out too shoddy. The next Regiment of Foot might come out slightly differently as a result.
Problems arose because I was finishing off some 15mm harquebusiers. Switching between the two was slightly taxing both on the eyes and the brain.
Jolly nice. Keep 'em coming Lluis. :)
I am doing a "Confederates" based Western force. As over the years I collected many different companies 15mm figures, some being for Confederates specifically. As I mainly do Union, I sort of had them spare. So mainly to use up my "odd" figures I thought to get a force out there. My Cavalry will look the oddest of all. But it's a force I can use, that's all that matters.
Miles
Nothing now until I have moved house and got myself settled.

Only spotted your recent photos today's posts drew my attention to this topic. Marvellous artwork there, Lluis.
Almost finished my PBI Finnish army.
Not sure what to tackle next. Maybe do another couple of dozen of those Bl***y 28mm Fuzzy Wuzzies. I have almost got to the same stage as I did on the 2nd hundred Zulu's.
After that possibly start getting stuff together for the new BB when its ready.
forgot the piccy
and again
The snow on the bases looks very good.
What have you done for the cloth and scenery to achieve a similar high quality finish?
There is about 3 thin layers of white over a light grey undercoat to get the depth. (I still haven't managed to find a white that dense enough for my tastes).
The bases are painted med dark brown then my favourite way to get mud effect. Mud and PVA mixed up. Some small bits of bush and very small stones from the beach lightly pressed into the mud/PVA. Once dry a black wash (courtesy of fat wally). The snow is AK terrain plopped on with a brush then water on a brush lightly over it once nearly dry.
First time doing snow for me and I am pleased with the effect.
I tend to use an Artists Acrylic sepia ink wash rather than black that can look a bit severe.
More PP Pirates - although I have now finished the Spanish and Pirate fleets for PoE - 18 ships in total. Had a great game just yesterday, although as a Pirate I leave a lot to be desired with 3/4 of my fleet getting burned.
Better luck / tactics next time.

I intended to go for a more monochromatic feel to them so kept to the black wash. Finished now including the armour for each of the three Finnish wars.
Think its time to turn m,y thoughts to the next project. Probably BB so may be a purchase or three this weekend at Entoyment. ;)

The Dervishes are completed but the Camel Corps are still trekking across the painting bench. Then it's back to WWI Russians so that my Russian army for the 1915 day doesn't turn up with too many Bolsheviks in its rank.
Brian
The Camel Corps have now arrived in the Sudan (the government have said that at no time did they place a contract with a shipping line with no ships) so Khartoum should be saved any day now. Amazingly the third army so far this year (RCW, Dervish, Camel Corps).
Next up: it's looking like the WWI Russians may not be such a priority now but there's not many to paint and I'm keen to paint up the armoured train for RCW.
Brian
The weathers changed here so I am able to be at home and do some work in the fields, repair fences, collect, wood, tidy up the wood blown down in the winter storms.
And do some war-game modelling, building and painting.
As the major shows are being cancelled for the next few months we should all now be spending the travel money on the websites of the traders who rely on these shows to keep their businesses running.
For most of us a trip to Salute alone would cost £50-£100's for the travel alone before any purchases on the day. So now take the opportunity to support these traders and invest in their products. The Post Office has not closed down and most will be at home to receive the parcels so spend your money!!
So get those projects in hand, buy the rules, buy the figures, get the figures painted, build the terrain and get ready for when things get back to normal as they will!!
I echo your sentiments, Les. Those lucky enough to be working from home should represent a bonanza to the traders: time on their hands to browse and paint, the money saved from that avoided travelling and being forced to reduce their socialising - what a great time to invest in the hobby!
Simon
All my painting is on a back burner, doing more picking up/dropping off for our older customers and offering to do their shopping
Stewart
You are a better man than me, Stewart - well done, and good luck!
Simon
Also doing no painting as I am now in the throes of decluttering.
As we both are in the "at risk or vulnerable group" my wife wants to use this time to sort through and reduce my stash donating to charity or selling any thing not of immediate use. I want to spend the time painting figures and terrain and reduce the stash slowly whilst listening to the radio and music.
I wonder who will get their way? ;)
Martin
We are doing all that as well Stewart spent yesterday with the tractor and box moving wood for an eldely lady close by.
Printer off copies of our 'Attestation de Deplacement Derogatoire' for our neibhbours who do not have internet access to be able to print them for them selves.
We need to fill out one for every small trip made away from home.
Very difficult to explain it to our 92 year old.
I know we all had great plans of how much of the metal/plastic mountain would get painted but now after nearly 3 weeks(UK) of isolation, how much of it have you actualy managed to do?
In my case very little. Seem to be going through a bit of black spot as regard to motivation right now. The same goes with the work that I am supposed to be "working from home" with as well.
Derek
Good question, Derek!
I had the motivation issue for the first week, but have got over that now.
The main problem now is fitting in feeding / educating / entertaining / exercising the children as well as keeping work ticking over in between the painting, which sadly is taking a back seat even though the spirit is now willing...
Simon
Work still going on Anzacs, Italians but have slowed down now as volunteering.

Been making steady progress with painting additional SCW forces - Assault Guards just done.
Also started my new lockdown/summer project -Vietnam.
Buildings arrived from PP today, and I have made bamboo terrain using plastic model bamboo from Amazon.
Nick
Well in a fit of inspiration I mounted my scw nationalists (primed them) put a few bits of paint on some ships...and then started printing parts for medical face masks that seem to be in short supply all over... i keep intending to paint more.
Bob
I've mounted and primed some SCW Republicans, still thinking about paint colours as they're militia. I'll have a look at some Osprey books and some scenes from "Land and Freedom".

This week I've just finished a new regiment for my Army of Tennessee refurbishing project:

That's lovely painting, Lluis!
Great to see an Army of Tennessee unit.
Decluttering has ground to a halt with lockdown, so back to painting - currently a unit of household knights for the WOR.
Shed door complete (I ended up making a new door and door frame), thoughts have returned to the English Civil Wars. More (yes Colonel, more) Regiments of Foot being planned. However currently gone down a research rabbit hole.
The lists of ECW coat colours available online and in some rule books replicate the same errors (London Trained Bands wearing red is a bugbear) so rather than shake a metaphorical fist in anger I have decided to write my own guide to coat colours (with references where doubt is present). First part (Parliamentarian RoF) here: https://www.keepyourpowderdry.co.uk/2020/05/coat-colours-part-1-parliamentarian.html
An order for two new RoF will be imminent. Which will no doubt become 4 RoF and 4 RoH.
Thanks for posting that useful coat colour resource, Radar - I look forward to further instalments. And congratulations on finishing the shed door!
MORE regiments of foot - shock, horror!
You'll run out of regiments to do soon - and then you'll no dount be tempted back to those Samurai...
Best of luck,
Simon
I would love to see a picture of all of Radar's ECW painted troops...that must be some collection by now. (Hint)
Samurai too huh? Just started mine. Doing interesting things too my eye sight though... I can see why you are taking a break...😜
Not the full collection Bob, but you can see almost all of the Covenanters https://www.keepyourpowderdry.co.uk/2019/06/the-solemn-league-and-covenant.html (https://www.keepyourpowderdry.co.uk/2019/06/the-solemn-league-and-covenant.html)
And a fair chunk of the Parliamentarian and Royalist forces https://www.keepyourpowderdry.co.uk/2020/03/streeters-plan-of-naseby-in-15mm.html (https://www.keepyourpowderdry.co.uk/2020/03/streeters-plan-of-naseby-in-15mm.html)
To see all of them would require sons #2 & #4 to tidy their bedroom floor, a task I fear would tax even Hercules!
Very, very nice sir..... like the way your movement trays work.
I can appreciate the comment about sons & clean rooms 😀😀.
Thanks.
Thanks Bob. I think they haven't quite worked out the concept of 'wardrobe' preferring to use the 'floordrobe'
Radar....no worries... I assure you kids all over N America use the very same concept. It is only in the excuse department that any differences are noticable.
The floodgates have opened. Royalist coat colours now up on the blog. https://www.keepyourpowderdry.co.uk/2020/05/coat-colours-part-2-royalist-regiments.html (https://www.keepyourpowderdry.co.uk/2020/05/coat-colours-part-2-royalist-regiments.html)
Covenanters being written (not very exciting this one - hodden grey, probably hodden grey, hodden grey, likely hodden grey, hodden grey etc etc There are a few plot twists though. Don't want to give any spoilers away.)
As a result two new regiments of foot have been ordered. My Tower Hamlet's LTB RoF fell into the 'all LTB wore red coats' trap so they are being repurposed as Birch's RoF. The Tower Hamlet's LTB (I really like their flag) are being raised anew in their correct civilian clothes and trained band buff outfits. To keep the kharmic wheel balanced the Royalists are raising a trained band, mainly so I can field a nice stripey flag.
Of course this will necessitate buying another storage box. But actually I can't put Royalists and Parliamentarians in the same box (we've all seen Night At The Museum, so we know what would happen if I did). So that's two boxes. They'll be pretty empty. Might as well fill them. 19 RoF and 18 RoH each side is a bit untidy, 20 RoF and 20 RoH would be more rounded I suppose.
Quiet peels of laughter here.
Glad to see I am not the only one who works that way...😀😀
Titter ye not!
I think it is a fairly standard way of thinking...
I'm surprised it's even worthy of comment - surely it's the norm?! ;)
Simon
I am still doing my Confederate and now Union forces for the Western game. With more specific scenery to match. Also doing/done the variety of markers needed.
I do like Stewart's suggestion of using PITS as well for The American Wild West. So will have to start looking at those rules soon, and I will have to get some Indians off PP as well.
Miles
Got the rest of my Union Cavalry, so hopefully get them finished. Got the Indian box set and got some Blue Moon (Sorry Martin!)Cowboys(celebrities set) and Stage coming. I will need some of PP cowboys/Posse/Cattleman to finish them off, later in the year. So I can do opposing forces.
So on top of 1941 (and 1946) PBI, AK 47 an official BB launch day I suggest a Western Day and of course catch up on SQ Bashing next year.....
Got a (big ish)PPI pay out and a smaller one to come, managed to put some by for my purposes, before the wife got her hands on it !Been spending a bit of money mainly at PPHQ on-line, and what a great service you get from keyboard to letterbox. Thanks to all on that.
Got the PITS rules as well. So I can look at what Stewart suggested, doing a Western using the rules ???
Next 4-6 weeks will look at starting the Crete Scenery and bits that Simon needs.
Miles
Well I still have two 15mm (toy) pirate ships to put sails on but not enjoying it and have no enthusiasm to do it.
Then by decks are clear ready for the Fallschirmjager to descend.
Stewart
Waiting for the armoured car to arrive.
Painting Mexican American war 1846 generals, a unit of US infantry, a unit of Mexican infantry, 4 US gun crews, some 18th century civilians, some Napoleonic Spanish infantry in top hats, and a M8 Armoured car.
I've got four regiments of foot (3 trained band regiments so no uniform colours at all) sat finished on painting strips. Just need their bases, and flags to be delivered (I know that the flags are en route), sadly the bases are waiting in limbo as Warbases are shut.
For some reason I have just ordered even more cavalry, when complete this will give King and Parliament 320 each. Which must surely be enough. (650 foot, 320 cavalry, 63 dragoons, 4 light guns, 3 medium guns, and 2 heavy guns, 14 commander types apiece - surely that means I'm finished?*)
Think I might be getting the hang of the lighting in the kitchen for painting - 11am-2pm is optimal light (old house, piddly windows, east facing aspect, not enough spot lights).
* err, no. There's Montrose's Scots and Irish still to have a go at
Les, what are you planning with those Mex American war stuff. A big skirmish society event?
martin
Had the figures for many years, so time to get them painted. Probably play Sharpe Practise with them with Ralph as an opponent.
And take them for a game or two at club in Carantan.
The same for the Peninsula Spanish as well.
Have several others as well, Maximillian in Mexico (28mm), Prussians for 7YW (28mm), the figures have been collected over the last 25 years as retirement projects, just taking time getting to retirement with all the work needed by Louise at her bar / resturant.
3000 or so 6mm MDF ACW figures for a refight of Gettysburg.
A 15mm FRench Napoleonic Dragoon unit and a few 28mm Numidian cavalry.
Just got a couple of the Lanchester ACs, so they are next on the list to paint up.
Nick
Waiting on the armoured cars, in the mean time 28mm Romans.
Here's the output for June. Kornilov Shock Regiment/Battalion, depending on rules in use. I've used some late war French with head swaps amongst the Russians. A good enough table top standard for my liking.
My workbench/painting desk has a small number of 28 mm Honved Infantry.
My last work was a General Bem vignette.

I'm looking forward to painting this Mex Rev range.
Thanks.

What range of 15mm figures did you use for the Chaco wars?
Just about to finish up a couple of XVIII cent. Ottoman units (both horse and foot), as well as a Louisiana Regiment for the Army of Tennessee I'm currently re-building. On the pipeline, a bunch of sailing ships and a galley.

Currently Finishing my HYW stuff, Which have been in a box for years. Then onto updating my ECW armies. Then going to have a Wargame.
Terry
What game Terry??
Will it be hampered by the situation.
Stewart and I have had 1 game. I lost, so it does not really count as a game.
martin :)
Working on Vietnam stuff now. Done a US force and a NVA force. Doing some additional bits like Hueys and some tanks then to do a force of guys in black pajamas
Derek
Sounds good, Derek. Some pictures would be very nice :)

I am just finishing off some pirate houses and barracks which with white (ish) stucco walls and red tile rooves will do service from Mexico to Spain. I am thinking of doing a West Indies AWI campaign next year so who knows they may even be used for the Caribbean. I have also painted the figures from the Vietnam re-education set; the guard with the AK has joined the rest of my VC, the female figure has joined my modern rioters and the man with the board is now a sandwich board man with the ominous message "The End is Nigh" and is a bit of colour for my Zona Alfa game in 15mm.
Andrew
Working on the New Zealand force for Crete.
Working on Mexican Revolution units.
Painting Zouaves and French infantry for Maximilian in Mexico.
I have been slowly working on a lifting canal bridge similar to the Bruegel Bridge, it has been a lot of fun and a bit frustrating too.
I hope it will be ready for priming and painting this coming week.
Then I will start working on the actual canal for the bridge.
Wow love to see some pictures on that please ?
Well of course working on Crete, this will be on and of over the next few months. RAF detachment and of Course an Australian force now for table 3 as well as table 3 itself, with some help and pointers From Big Mike.
But also working on the old Factory game, re modelled and possibly 6 x 4 0r even 8 x 4 table ? To give a bit more room so there won't be so much confined space to play in ? Those that have played will know what I am on about ? So effective making it 2 tables(games) side by side with 4 or more people playing. Making it a 1945 game but with some 1946 extras (if the war had continued?)
Because since the game was first put together 5 years ago ? A lot more kits of the late war period have come on the market, from the British point of view (the Comet tank) rather than me putting PP converted Centurions on the board Mk 3 with 17pdr as to make Mk1/2 was a big task ?
Hopefully we can put this game out for Bovington next year ?
Miles
I have done the majority of the scenery that I committed to for Crete (am now just waiting for Ironclad Miniatures to re-work their field fortifications to make them compatible with PP bases, for use as dug-in markers) and am about 20% of the way through the c. 250 German paras that I'm painting.
I might be there for a little while...

Turned out to be 30 years war. As my opponent was my mates son (French) Used RoF ruleset. we had to call a draw which was possibly the best outcome as we both had identical armies with identical deployment. I used my large table and put 2 rivers in to reduce it`s frontage which worked well. We will be doing a HYW next. Him as French and me as Les Anglais. If I can remember I will post a pic or 2.
Terry
Phew!
I keep all my 15mm Figures in metal filing cabinets being magna based they don`t slide around. I just pulled out a drawer with 200+ figures in it and dropped it onto a concrete floor---------What a mess!
The magna bases must all have jumped when they hit the floor most ended up on their sides.
Total damage--3 had dropped their pikes
Oh! what a lucky man.
The 3 have been flogged :)

Varnished blue vinyl tiles to keep it modular?

I need to do some for 15mm, I have 6 x 1 foot sections of canal for PBI. I do need 2/3 bridges for it.

Currently putting 15mm Italian Warsfigures into units for painting for the Furioso rules.
Trying to work my way through over 200 mounted Cossacks.
Finally able to start painting again and have been able to get the first base and screening crossbow on the paint stands, prepped and now started blocking. Discoverd the arthritis is not hindering me so long as I work in a few half hour bursts at a time. First base will be 80x30 with 14 figures in two ranks, heavily but not fully armoured, Romandiole pikemen. Screen is two 40x30 bases of 2 crossbowmen each. Figures are A and M Swiss armoured pike; screen are Blue Moon crossbowmen from the Swiss codes, which easily double as Italians. Rules are Furioso, which uses 40mm frontage bases, but my pike block will be 3 80x30 bases and two 40x30 rear bases to remove as casualties/substitutes, thus it is an 8 base unit.
Trying to finish off some MexRev scenery before the first figures arrive... scratchbuilt cacti, converted christmas tree agaves, rly modelling maize fields, street barricades, finishing the scratchbuilt mission church, railway station, cantina and other blocks of adobe buildings...
15mm Napoleonic Austrians 1809
15mm WW2 Eastern Front 1945
28mm Modern Skirmish
15mm WW2 USMC and Japanese
15mm War of the Roses
Right now, what I have on workbench is:
- a 15mm ottoman provincial infantry regiment (18 figs.)
- a 15mm confederate cavalry battalion (both mounted and dismounted, 8 of each)
- a 15mm ottoman general stand (2 figs.)
- a 1/600 scale ship of the line
- a 1/600 scale frigate
- a 1/600 scale lantern galley
- awaiting turn, a 15mm ottoman janissary regiment (18 figs.)

Currently Bavarian Napoleonic 15mm. Generals and ADCs on the painting desk right now. Further line battalions to follow. After that I fancy a change. I might paint my PBI Italian partisans.
John
15mm Early (mainly)and Late Desert vehicles for the 8th Army, also any missing Desert scenery needed for PBI game. Start Sorting out my DAK forces. So later this year I can start playing games relating 1941 and next couple of years of 1942,1943 Themed Games Days. (One can only hope and look forward...)

After some time I finally finished the canal for my bridge, not 100% happy with the water colour, but it's my first time painting water. It does reflect the bridge and the buildings, so that's a bonus.

I prefer small scnery items atht can be used in multiple situatons.
Lovely work Matias.

Currently working on MexRev finishing a mounted detachment of Rurales in their smokey blue field uniforms and a dismounted detachment in skirmish order, with an NCO acting as a horse holder with horses from the Western Mexican range. A skirmish line of Federales is nearing completion and the Villistas will have one too. These can be used in more low level engagements. My games are based on Platoon-Company level engagements.
Next on the painting table will be the Villista train complement, with MGs, field gun, and crouching and standing riflemen to man an improvised armoured train.
Very nice, Matias. The "clutter" outside of the garage helps tie in the scale nicely. I think your river looks spot-on.
Simon
Love your Bridge. The corrugated roof looks amazing too.
Miles
I agree, Matias, your scenery and buildings look fab! - they are a good balance between realism and playability.
Building up my Armour for DAK and 8th Army, before I start figure painting, as I have a 15mm DAK army to paint, and any scenery if needed for the Mediterranean ( and Western/Mexico as it all sort of looks the same?) including a board for Crete ? As it might finally get to be played.
Then back to NW Europe towards the end of the year for next year's modelling/Wargames shows.

I've had to re-order my entire modern collection (ALL Peter Pig) and Vietnam collection (all Flashpoint) after the figures all went missing a couple of moves ago.
If anyone's interested, this is the long and short of what happened (re-posted from FOF) and it was quite tragic.
QuoteI've moved alot over the years and in the past 10, I've moved more times than I care to admit. That said, I've been in my current place for over 3 years now and it feels more like home than many places I've been. When I finally settled in and decided I would get back into gaming, I took stock of the stuff that was in boxes I'd been lugging around over the years since splitting with my ex, and realized that ALL of my painted 15mm miniatures had disappeared with no explanation. All my Flashpoint US and VC figures, all my Peter Pig US Modern and Insurgent forces...... gone.
I usually keep very good track of my stuff, so I'm unsure how these could have went missing. The only saving grace was all my 15mm choppers and flight stands for both Nam and moderns were found. I'm more upset about the figures because painting 15mm was a right pain in the ass and I was happy I'd slogged through enough painting to have 2 full collections.
Everytime I see my vast collection of 15mm middle east buildings (painted) I think...... oh man.... to get to use those, I need to paint a crap load of minis. I have since bought back all the Peter Pig mini codes I'm missing, as well as jimmi helping me out with some Flashpoint packs, but geez.... so much painting to do to get my 15's back where they were. Needless to say, due to all the effort required, that project is waaaaaaay on the back burner for now.
No longer on the back burner, but a steep hill to climb. Thanks for listening. :)

This isn't quite news about Wargames models itself :
But my Quest/Saga has come to an End, To have a modelling workshop and Wargames area.
I now have a fully functional Wargames cabin, with electricity and lights and Tables now. It's been a slog as an electrician that was going to put in the wiring kept letting me down, "I will be there next weekend" I didn't realise people can be so flippant about £600 plus worth of work ? So I found another one with a good reputation and he has been here the past few evenings this week and done it. finally...
So those that live down and along on the South coast of the UK I can now offer a Wargames venue in my back garden that's well lit and ventilated with plenty of table space to play and set up( up to 12ft x 4 ft or 9ft x 6 ft or 6ft x 5 ft or 6x 4 ft which ever we need ? )
As and when the current rules and regulations allows us to.
Miles
Good news Miles
Crikey Todd.
The best way to find something is to get a new one and then it suddenly appears.
Keep buying PP stuff and other men will admire you. I think James Bond and jack Reacher both have a lot of PP figures (?)

Currently finishing up my SCW buildings. Had them a long time, and the castings are quite bad, but having tried and failed to find the enthusiasm previously, with my new found motivation, I'm cracking on.
As Martin did with his, I'm adding bits of interest to each base. A dog here. A water trough there. I've just ordered a few extra bits and pieces for added interest. I'll post some pictures when done.
Coincidentally, I spent the weekend on scenics too - scratchbuilding some livestock water troughs and ranch railings out of balsa and matchsticks for my MexRev Ranches/Haciendas...
I like the idea of adding some animals and livestock for extra interest... maybe I need to put some longhorns on my shopping list!

Mine are from SHQ. The molds must be really old as the detail isn't great, and there are some bubbles here and there. But Martin made such a great job of his, I couldn't resist.
They're all painted now and Im as happy as I can be with them. Just need to base them with some odds and ends then I'll post up some pictures.
Well done Sean. I went down to SHQ's HQ a couple of years back (may have been 3 now, with the pandemic "lost year"...) and bought one of everything, and then got Martin's chimney stacks, so I'm looking forward to see how your turn out to give me more inspiration!

Crete has temporarily gone on the back-burner with the AK47 day around the corner. So I'm now mostly working on AK47 casualty markers, carriers and scenery templates.
Simon
Getting on really well with my PBI partisans. Done all the officers, 4 infantry platoons, MMG platoon. Working on the casualty markers at present, then back to more infantry. I need loads of them as a raw platoon costs 50 points. Which reminds me I need to buy some more LMGs and mortars from Martin.

Working on my Religious fanatics for Ak47 and terrain for this and Bloody Barons.
Working on Uncle Joseph's hoards.

I'm glad the Vallejo ground texture works for you, Julian. It takes more time than a dab of glue and a handful of sand, but does give a tidier and better controlled finish.
Simon
Julian,
I saw the earlier good advice about glossing the surface before applying decals.
I also use Humbrol Decalfix afterwards, to soften the decal and draw it into the model.
And then gloss varnish again, before a matt varnish.
Applying to flat surfaces is rather easier than to curved or bumpy ones, of course!
Simon
Still plugging away at the Mex Rev. Having seeded a mix of western types and various converted solderadas/adelitas amongst the rebels I'm trying to complete the armed mobs for the early part of the revolution. I've almost finished basing up a couple of Mondragons with Govt. gun crews and putting the finishing touches to an Irregular Minis improvised armoured car...
My Total Battle Miniatures Russian buildings order arrived today, have to say they are rather good clean cast resin. Will pop a photo up in a couple of weeks when they have some paint on.
Dave & Ben
I look forward to seeing those, Dave. Their Russian Orthodox Church is quite a monster, and would look pretty impressive on the table!
Simon
That is one of them, it s larger than I expected!!
Dave
I can't quite believe it but I'm STILL plugging away at MexRev. This is pretty much the longest I've stuck with one single period (though there have been minor deviations into Naval, Aerial and Railways). It beats my Russian Civil War in Central Asia, and my Transcaspian adventure and MallMiss.
I'll probably deviate and make up some more Sonoran cacti, and hopefully create some prickly pear and yucca to add some additional topical scenic touches...
For now.....nothing. Having a short break then, after AK day going to concentrate on 2 x ACW armies.
Between doing that, after getting C&K I will be looking at that. Not sure if I am going to do it as figures or keep it strictly as top down markers form my magnetic board. Have 1 large Mongol Army that, just by changing the name, can cover almost 2000 years of history. There have always been mainly horse borne archer armies. :D
Derek
I'd say that all your "firsts" turned out pretty well, Julian!
Looking forward to seeing them in the flesh on Saturday.

The taxis look splendid Julian.
Just completed 15mm (?) Joan of Arc buildings for my ECW project. Will post pictures on that thread.
Without giving away any state secrets for November's Group build challenge, has anyone any tips for more awkward headswaps? I'm contemplating some to create mexican mounted reservists using the Govt. cavalry troopers - only snag is the rifle and rifle sling mouldings are perilously close to the caps... ???
I had something similar on one of mine. I cut down vertically between head and rifle barrel. Give yourself some margin and don't worry about cutting into the head, as it will come off anyway.
Heads are best removed by twisting with pliers, after which you can clean up around the rifle and straps before drilling for the head spigot.
If all goes awry, make sure your new head is wearing a big sombrero!
Does that help any?
Simon
Giving the ECW a little break whilst working on a 12mm WWI French army which I will be using with a variety of rules, including SB. I got into 12mm French WWI accidentally (it's a long story) and 15mm 1914 Belgium is still on for Square Bashing, with a very small number of French who can support the Belgians and the Brits. Acquired the 12mm French by chance, so they can take on my eastern front 12mm Germans and give them a rest from those pesky Russkies.
Thanks Simon,
That was roughly what I had in mind...I'll be replacing with straw hats and fedoras with an upturned brim... but I appreciate the sentiment and the encouragement! ;D
Neil
Just contemplating another nautical excursion for Mex Rev... scratchbuilding a civilian wooden motor boat c.1900 as an inshore harbour patrol or revenue cutter... slightly larger than the WW1 pinnace. It gives me an excellent excuse to use a combination of the Sudan Naval crew and Russian Naval gun crew...
Neil
about 90 % Carthaginian painted. Then to chance my hand with shield transfers then basing. Turn my mind to sorting out that mass of Persians after that.
Derek
Currently working on a medieval shop for use with both the WotR and ECW.
I'm just about to embark on three Sherman tanks in Ugandan colours, specifically for AK47. I understand they were in a bronze green which will make a nice change from olive drab everywhere!
I've been going a-Viking this week :)
Simon
An assortment of basing, gluing, and undercoating jobs across a number of periods...
WoTR, Medieval, Mex Rev and Ancients
Assembling bits and bobs to pluck up the courage for my next nautical scratchbuild...
Neil
Almost finished my 14th Army/Australians for PBI. Just the dead to go. Also working on RoF.
John
Re-visiting my Various armies,
Just added some bases and vehicles to WW2 Early war French, WW2 motorised US , extra unit for my C&K Mongals.
Going to start on my PPI USMC and Japanese to see what extras they may need.
Stewart
Now moving on to painting more WotR units and commanders.
Looking forward to seeing pics of the Mahknovists, Julian. That sounds like my cup of tea!
Neil
More militia and trucks / technicals for AK47 Republic.
Best wishes,
Martin Buck
Finishing units for WAM... its an old collection so rebased, then rebased back how I had them lol. Now working on my box of scenery to have them fit to 12x6 or 6x6 grid.
Now working on two things at once, almost in a UGOIGO fashion, as drying time is needed with both painting and basing. As the WotR progresses (putting together a unit in Clifford's livery at the moment), I am also rebasing my 15mm WWI figures to standard Square Bashing using rounded edge bases from Warbases. This morning I was painting WotR melee figures' clothing beneath armour and livery coats (contrast paints from Warhammer, Groningen) and applying Vallejo basing material to a battalion of BEF plus a machine gun, using a modelling spatula and Vallejo earth basing picked up at the model shop in Groningen (Modelbow Krikke).
Have now finished my summer projects of 1940 Germans and Mex Rev. I am starting on my winter projects which are WW2 Finns (winter) and C & K Vikings. Ongoing projects are various AFVs for WW2 and ECW for RoF.
John
Been busy making terrain templates for the Square Bashing Day. They will be functional but maybe not entirely finished...
Simon
I'm still plugging away at my technicals and armoured vehicles and those fiddly little projects mounting weapons and crew on/in vehicles. Awaiting a PP parcel to mount a ZPU-4 on my spare QRF tracked chassis and more support weapons and crews for the troops. I need more bases I've been so busy it would appear.
I'm trialling a new process - getting figures 3/4 complete then basing before finishing off 'in situ'. No point in highlighting bits no-one will see eh?
The plan is to finish all my Govt. forces before Christmas
Neil
Off to Modelbouw Krikke again this afternoon to see if I can pick up a more user friendly plastic spatula for applying basing material. The metal one is ok, but a bit fiddly getting between figures bases. At least I very quickly surmised that putting reusable tufts back on new bases before applying basing material was probably as stupid as giving the richest in society a massive tax break.
I use my blunted scalpel blades as mini spatulas for applying basing material... the curved No.10 does most jobs and the triangular 10A is good for getting into those important little places...
Neil
I use a wooden lollipop stick to dump the basing material onto the base, and then move it around with a cocktail stick.

;D ;D ;D
I've repainted all my 10mm Goblins into the D&D colours ie Tan, Ochre etc now just need to rebase. They should make some bases towards a Goblin Army.
Also finishing some 15mm sci-fi infantry... just need a few praetorians
Currently I am in 6mm mode, the German Wars of Unification. This will certainly occupy most of this year, but then it will be back to Square Bashing 1914 - my troops are languishing and begging for an outing, and I want to play through the retreat to the Marne. If I can do a decent job of fitting scenarios to the grid I'll photograph them and post them. I have a very nice book of gridded paper for this purpose.
Sounds good Andy.
martin :)
Have just submitted a figure review to the Society of Ancient's journal Slingshot for the Dark Ages Carolingians. Should be in the next issue.
Very nice figures and worthy of tabletop outings. When my gaming group started talking of games for the "Crusades", I interpreted this as Charlemagne against the pagan Saxons, not the later Holy Land stuff. Originality of thought rather than understanding the obvious?
Thank you for doing that. Very nice
martin :)
No worries. Good figures deserve to be seen. My PP Bedouin have seen a lot of tabletop use, usually on the wrong end of Egyptian or Sumerian spears, but they fill a vital role in the games I set up.
Building the Bedouin army and reviewing the PP figures for Slingshot triggered off my whole Middle Kingdom Egyptian and project, and now includes Bedouin, two Egyptian armies (for civil wars), Hyksos, Nubian and Libyan.
Hello Steve
Like you I always enjoy making new armies.
That army needs about 7 games to earn its place.
A bonus is that using a desert cloth makes a game look great.
martin :)
Currently a step by step 1914/15 BEF infantryman using Contrast and standard paints to get a fairly quick finish. Photographing as I go and will submit as a Mill article.
MILL contributions always wanted Andy
martin :)
I'm taking a pause from AK47 armies for the moment. I recently discovered my late C18 Indian armies lead pile (mostly Freikorps, Two Dragons, Minifigs and Irregular). I'm currently ploughing through a Rajput army to game the civil wars in the 1790s. Plenty of telinga battalions to go round but not enough levies, cavalry, camel guns, rockets and artillery of all sizes. There's plenty of different troops to keep me quiet for a bit. I kid myself they take up less space when they're done!
Neil
Square Bashing 1914/15 maybe into 1916 pre Helmet BEF. First of all enough to do SB day at the end of May then have enough to do the army book options?

Mill article done and dusted, now down-scaling my 10mm Later C19th armies to 20mm frontage so I can get the best out of my various rules and table. Will now be able to comfortably use them with Square (Krupp) Bashing, They Died for Glory, Field of Battle 3, Neil Thomas C19th, Chris Pringle's Bloody Big Battles and the Bello Ludi Big Battle Rules.

Not sure i I need any more. Time to turn attention to wood/or something similar and building.
The rocks are rock salt. At one of the craft fairs I "helped" out at with the misses there was a guy selling large blocks of the stuff with light fitting inside. HE was selling of bags of the stuff (offcuts) at £2.50 per bag. I think they look "other-worldly" enough. Only problem with them is they react weirdly when in contact with PVA. Well the PVA does anyway. Almost repels it and makes it "curdle". Break out the rubber solution... works fine.
Derek
Good pieces Derek.
Game on.
martin :)
I am still deep in FPW territory, so not 15mm at present. However, I recently recieved my PP Dutch 1940 force, and am looking forward to getting on with that. I also need to complete the rebasing and expanding of my three 15mm WWI armies - British and Belgian, with a bit of French support, and German.
After a lot of time spent painting 28mm, mostly Vikings, Rus, Goths and the like I opened up my two boxes of 15mm WotR, had a game, enjoyed it so much that I am now painting all the rest of my collection and really enjoying getting back into 15mm painting.
Andy, what paint pot are you using for your Dutch?
A Vallejo number. My eyes are poor at colour.

This happens to me a lot. I also paint the odd 28mm army for fantasy or science fiction games. When I come back to 15mm, it's a real joy!
Indeed, especially Martin's figures as they seem to suit my painting style to a tee.
I have yet to experiment. Currently thinking in terms of grey green with a dilute wash of blue. It's a tricky colour to get right. The helmets are a different colour, w2ith a dull brass plate in front, sometimes painted over by individuals. The marines are the easiest to paint. Trousers standard uniform colour, but jackets are black. Helmets as other units. Now have space on my painting stand, so will put a few up today and try some colours over the next few days. Wednesday and Thursday are my Dutch learning days, also known as flogging a dead horse. Good job my son is now fluent. Languages have never been my fore-tay.
Bits and bobs before I go back to the old treadmill that is work after a long Easter break. I've just finished off a pack of stray dogs for my RCW and had a crafty day making a medieval tomb for the AK47 FB monument build challenge...
Neil
That is nice Neil. That car must be carrying some French business men.

A refresh of this old thread!
I'm currently close to finishing my Civil Guard for the Spanish Civil Guard. Following that WW2 desert Italians and far East Japanese. I'm also plugging away at Samurai for variety.
I'm also planning some scenery for TCR, a minefield for AK47 and objectives for desert, far east and NWE PBI.
Currently putting together a War of Spanish Succession Bavarian force using 18mm 2D WoFun figures, originally painted by Peter Dennis for his Paperboys. Cuts way down on the figure painting, although I do like to paint the edges, which gives the figures more of a 3D aspect. Still means I can do two pretty big armies in a month rather than a number of years.
A friend has been extolling the virtues of the WoFun figures. Great for getting big armies done quickly.
Caught between doing Scenery, partials and a jungle. AFRICAN figures for AK and some tanks !
Just beheaded, re-headed and primed my figures for Wild Geese and my African Army. Mainly SLR and FN and Brens as we went by the film and not the book ?
Then after they are finished, my British "Old Colonials army" based on a force you would have seen in Aden in the mid 60s ! With SlRs Brens and SMGs mixed in with WW2 figures no doubt.
Getting there slowly.

Here are a couple of photos of my 18mm WoSS French cavalry by WoFun, showing how I try to get a more 3D effect with edge painting. It also takes away the whitish glare of the plexiglass edge.
Oh well! Now Flikr is refusing to let me copy the code over. Just when you think you've got something sorted out it changes again. I swear IT is far and away the most frustrating thing I have come across in my life. I thought the whole idea was to make life easier.
I rediscovered an old friend... a stalled 40yr old project - Renaissance Poles. Originally conceived as a DB* sized army consisting of an assortment of makers but predominantly Donnington, Essex and Irregular. In the spirit of AK47, and channelling those old time wargamers, I have created my own ImagiNation as a minor constituent part of the Polish Commonwealth - The Grand Duchy of Covonia. I spent an enjoyable time creating a backstory, emblem and heraldry, complete with whimsical motto.
I have just placed an order to finish off and expand the units into larger configurations of 6 cavalry and 12 infantry. I had a very enjoyable morning in the shade painting up banners, flags and pennons for the Hussars, Pancerni and Cossacks.

I have not played Square Bashing in decades. I bought ver 2 when it came out but not yet played it. Next week I am playing a late war game and so started rereading the rules.
Last week I got my 20mm Britannia WW1 collection, which I painted some 30 year ago, and refurbished the figures on new bases.
I finished the first few units this morning.

I have been busy revamping more figures for SB. Whilst I am plodding through my old 20mm figures I have taken a break to get a few 10mm Russian and Austrian Pendraken figures done as well.
I of course need extra figures for both the 20mm and 10mm armies to be able to field 620 point armies.
I perhaps should also declare I have small 28mm armies for both early and late war as well. I have added a photo of a game I put on at Fiasco many years ago.

Moved on from the Renaissance Poles to another stalled project of Yesteryore. A 3-cornered Napoleonic fight between Russians, Ottomans and Qajars over Georgia and the Caucasus. I converted some spare Renaissance Cossack infantry into Azerbaijanis by Milliputing shaggy Papakhas. I'm currently working on 3 Bttns of Minifigs Russian line... I Will be leaning on Irregular Minis for some Chechens, Ossetians, Dagestanis etc.
Neil
Gosh Neil. That sounds worthy of MILL article.

Even if there is nary a Piggy Man in sight, Martin?
Believe me I did scour the PP ranges for inspiration...

No problem at all. 15mm is the only criterion. I would welcome contributions from other manufacturers too.
martin :)
Currently a mix of 18mm WoFun Dutch infantry for the WoSS and 1866 Austrian casualties for Walter Schnaffs.
I have four thinks on the go, two hardware and two software.
1. Painting two Peter Pig samurai forces - will use the Dragon Rampant rules.
I'm finding Samurai difficult to paint, the photographs on the PP website are very helpful.
2. Painting a hundred or so Pendraken figures to fill out a 16th century Kongo empire army.
3. Tweaking Nik Wright's Irregular Wars to accommodate Greeks, Macedonians, Carthaginians and Romans (Mainly Successor and Punic wars).
4. Dragging the Osprey Rebels and Patriots, kicking and screaming into a WW2 setting.
Now moving forward with a revival of my 15mm metal Italian Wars. Decided to do a basing system to give a reduced 15mm footprint for Basic Impetus. A 60mm frontage will work for my 6x3 table. Bases can then also be used for other systems I may want to try.

Andy, Neil, Steve get out those pens and start composing an article please.
martin :)
I've already sent in painting the WWII Dutch infantry - leastways, I think I have.
You have indeed sent in a Dutch article Andy. It was in the last MILL. The colour guide for paints was very useful. I bought those Vallejo colours you recommended. Thanks.
martin :)
The article in the Mill 22 is the one I did on using Contrast paints on WWI BEF.
Apologies Martin - turns out that the Dutch article is not in my sent emails, so I'll get onto it shortly. I need to check if I actually included it in a WWII post on the forum. I appear to have been planning to do it, as mentioned on page 40 of this thread, but could not load pictures at the time. That problem is now solved so I shall put together what I have come up with in terms of paints.
You are right Andy.
Ready when you are.
martin :)
Done and emailed.
Nowhere near anything ready yet, not even figures a.t.m. but will crack on nonetheless even if I don't meet the deadline
Neil
That Georgian rabbit hole is deeper than I thought - as the recent scenic builds suggest. I belatedly realised I'm effectively assembling four armies much like I did with my AK forces. I'm getting there but there is still a long ways to go...
Neil
I'm building some new hedges, from Woodland scenic bushes, but struggling to get the PVA/water mix to go hard in NZers wet spring weather...
I may have to seal them with varnish if I cannot get them to stay together.
Cheap hairspray can useful for sealing flock onto trees and hedges.
I am finishing off or continuing with my Western Styled Africans ? The force I did for Wild Geese. As I can use the same troops to represent the African Kantangense force for Jadotville.
Also sorting out troops to represent the Irish, More Head Changes ?
I will cheat a bit with these, the Command groups will have the Blue Berets and flags, while the rest of the forces with have normal military coloured berets.
Does anyone know where I can get the Ford Armoured Car that the Irish use please ?

I'm working on a Later Visigothic DBA army as a prize for a tournament. These are verrrry old 15mm sculpts from TTG, or 15mm.co.uk. Despite their age they look decent with some paint (even my paint...,🙂).
A couple of Peter Pig figures have been drafted in to fill the ranks. One used to be a ? Parthian standard bearer, but now has a Draco and a big round shield. T'other is def a PP horse, but may be a PP Numidian, not sure. He likewise acquired a big shield and nasty attitude to join the Goths...
just started on a sombrero army. Cant get started on it for some reason. Ah well. no rush!.
Derek
For rebel cavalry I suggest.
1. Base the figures first so that they can be used in games.
2. Undercoat with white then Tan
3. Ink wash brown.
4.Add some black trousers and horses.
5. Add some dark brown trousers and horses.
6. Add some white to horse ankles and flashes.
7. Add some blue to trousers and jackets.
8. Gunmetal for rifles and barrels.
Job done for gaming.
By this method one can do 50-70 figures per day.
martin :)
Two different, yet similar C19th things. First off I am giving the Dominion of...... rules a try out using the Balaclava scenario in 2mm. Completed the Russian force and now started on the Anglo-Turkish force. 14 bases in total (as I have given each force an HQ base). Secondly started a project to paint up my long standing 10mm Franco-Prussians of Republican French and Prussians/Bavarians in greatcoats. 30mm frontage bases to suit Square Bashing (but 20mm depth - still getting four or five infantry to a base). Will probably add a bit of snow. So as to keep a focus I am painting just the troops for a Villers-Bretonneux scenario, to also include the French unloading a battery of guns from a train. I enjoy these rules so much that my next focus will be a 15mm BEF August 1914 scenario, set during the Great Retreat.
At the moment a refresh of some 15mm tanks I first painted 15 years ago and more units for my Stalingrad project
After the success of my first Svaneti tower, I'm working on a second one with attached buildings. The Orthodox church is all but finished now. It is quite cathartic converting all those foam scraps into tangible scenic pieces. At some point I will have to turn to the actual figures again! I've had some success using PP 16/62 Cossack heads on Irregular Caucasus infantry to inject more variety...
Neil
I'm getting my Montagnards ready for their outing at WWW.
