Have just sent out version 44 of "western". Do feel welcome to discuss it here. No great secrecy needed yet!  Trying out track tonight??

Colonel Kilgore

Martin,

You may be opening Pandora's box here...

Would you like my comments to be posted here, or emailed to you and Les as per usual?

martin goddard

Hello Simon

Send to Les or me please. What i wanted to encourage is for members to comment on what aspects they like or dislike. I am looking for people's "feelings". I can then put that into action/amendment.
So.. "the movement rates seem too generous" is helpful.  More so,  than "change the 1,2,3 score to 1,2"

Colonel Kilgore

Got it, and will do!

Oh - and for the record my main "feeling" so far is that it's a fun game with lots of nuances / ability to deploy interesting forces, and with some slick and interesting mechanisms :)

Get off the fence and tell us how you really feel!

How is it that the Indians always lose.
What the point of trains, do they aid movement? Provide cover, move each turn or remain stationary? How does the mounted posse arrive from the train?
How will the track effect the game?
Has anyone used the ability to set fires?
Anyone use dynamite in any games?
How are you getting on with the pre game campaign?
Does the three options give enough extra character for the commander/player?
Do the rules need enough terrain types to create a town not just random ranch/camp type squares?
Should the cattlemen be forced to have a large herd of cattle to control/defend?
Should the indians have pony herds or bison to look after?
How do the indian count coup, the act of touching an enemy, as a deed of bravery, or an act of first touching an item of the enemy's in order to claim it.
Just a few things for discussion.

Sorry Sean, I just can't make up my mind  ;D

Feeling a bit Hammered, so will hunker down for a bit...

martin goddard

Good points Les.  thanks

Stewart 46A

I don't feel hammered but I'll 'belly down' until the shooting stops

Sean Clark

I like the idea of enough terrain (4 building templates??) to make a town.

Not tried fires or dynamite or trains yet.

Colonel Kilgore

I don't see why anyone would opt for the "Legendary Lover" option - it seems to me to be far better to go for the Shooter or Fighter. I may be missing something?

martin goddard

I must confess that the lover option was mainly for fun and narrative qualities. However if you keep risking him and he dies, the chances of VP gains are good. I have made it 5,6,7 Vp return to the owner. Thus denying anything to the shooter.   For play-testing.

Colonel Kilgore

Thanks Martin - that sounds like more fun. Will be interesting to see how it plays out: logically [I think] one would only go for this if:

a) there is a high likelihood of death i.e. you're going to use him a lot in fights to bolster groups, and
b) the expected benefit from the death-related points outweigh the benefit of having the 2 extra dice in each fight as a Legendary Fighter.

I'd love to hear of anyone actually giving this one a go.

martin goddard

Yes, let us see hw it goes. I can always adjust so it benefits me in games?

martin goddard

Here are some return thoughts Les. Not meant to cut any discussion off though!

How is it that the Indians always lose.
There is no logical reason but it seems to happen.

What the point of trains, do they aid movement? Provide cover, move each turn or remain stationary? How does the mounted posse arrive from the train?
I have nothing about trains yet but will need to do something. maybe a  moving square of partial cover.

How will the track effect the game?
It looks nice and anchors the buildings and camps.

Has anyone used the ability to set fires?
Not to my knowledge.

Anyone use dynamite in any games?
Dynamite is now purchasable and is being used by Stewart, Rob and Matt

How are you getting on with the pre game campaign?
It is very rough and I have only played three times with it,  early days?

Does the three options give enough extra character for the commander/player?
Probably as it is not intended to give him skirmish game aspects. e is just bit special, not significant.

Do the rules need enough terrain types to create a town not just random ranch/camp type squares?
Town fights are probably a special scenario. It is possible to have 4 building squares on the table.  a mounted force would be a bit upset to be faced with a town.

Should the cattlemen be forced to have a large herd of cattle to control/defend?
Probably a scenario aspect otherwise they would be too hobbled?

Should the indians have pony herds or bison to look after?
Horses are very important to the Indians but the games need to be fights with a chance of success.

How do the indian count coup, the act of touching an enemy, as a deed of bravery, or an act of first touching an item of the enemy's in order to claim it.
Sadly coup had long since disappeared before the times of western.

All good  thoughts Les.  thanks.

Are you buying an Apple mac for Christmas Les?  Anyone else using a mac on this forum??
