From the stage coach thread this got me thinking. What other iconic images are there that shout 'Old West'

The train is certainly one. As is the Saloon. Cactus too. Those grainy photographs of the Indians with deeply etched faces.

The Ken Burns series on the West is brilliant much like the Civil War series.

Any dry dusty town with the tumble weed blowing down the street and some moody towns folk watching the stars.

And any of the spaghetti western theme music.

Butch cassidy and the hole in the wall gang.

Mexicans just sitting snoozing waiting for the action.

Is that a pub Martin? 😉 My brother in law has just opened a restaurant down the road from my house. His partner is a Texan and they do FANTASTIC smoked meat. They have a Winchester hanging up. I assume it's a replica but never asked!

The snoozing Mexican is a great one.

I don't know what it is called but that rocky outcrop that is in all Westerns, sort of low slopes part way up then just a tall pillar of rock shooting straight up. A Google search tells me it is in Monument valley.

I thought the Winchester was were Arthur Daley (George Cole) and Terry did some of their dodge deals!!

Its also the pub in Shaun of the Dead where they hole up and hope the whole zombie apocalypse blows over.

Yes. Butte, Mesa and Dissected Plateaux. All of them are iconic Western scenery, what size to make one though, they are pretty big so should probably be at least on a 12" by 12" board. Could make for good ambush country especially if there are two side by side with a valley up the middle.

The rule set "B troop ain't coming back" by Ian Beck had buttes as part of the scenery. maybe there are pictures of his games somewhere/?
A greta set of rules too!

 "B troop ain't coming back"

Played this several times at STaB, great game for involving a number of players. Each player runs a different Holywood style group. Each group has a different set of objectives and different criteria for winning. All the while the Indians are gathering on the table edges.

Dave M has most of the factions.

I have been looking for a copy of these rules for some time - seem as rare as hen's teeth.

One of the Reading clubs put on a demo with a 6mm version of an update to the rules on a huge table at a Warfare a few years back. Looked fabulous with more "in-scale" distances than one sees normally, and there was even talk of publishing the rules, but I've heard nothing since.

Another icon: the cool dude (probably has no name) casually putting his lit cigar to a dynamite fuse, with explosive results.

Leslie BT

Simon, just had a look along my bookshelves were I keep my rules and I appear to have hens teeth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Better than that all the bits are mounted on individual cards, events, factions etc. And Martin even made all the bits for the events.

Congratulations Les!

I had quite a few of those Tabletop Games rules, but never quite got around to buying that particular set.

Maybe it will get revived one day? Meanwhile, you seem to have something of a collectors' item on your shelves!
