More on the Magnificent Seven...

Steve McQueen refused to be still in shots with Yul Brynner in it, and kept attracting attention to himself [e.g. fiddling with his hat when YB was speaking], leading to a big rift between the actors.

McQueen also learned to handle his gun better than Brynner, apparently practising for hours each day until he could shoot two rounds into a one-square-foot target in just eleven hundredths (!?) of a second.

McQueen also taught Brynner the flicking-the-gun-backwards-into-the-holster trick, while Eli Wallach (Calvera) always holds his holster with his other hand, for fear of missing it when putting his gun away.

Must watch this film (or maybe the whole series...) again soon!

Have started watching 'Deadwood' western series, interesting dress attire

Magnificent 7, great film.  Liked the new version too!

Colonel Kilgore

Yep - the new one was much better than I had feared, and I enjoyed it (even if it won't ever replace the original).

However, the bad guys rocking up with a Gatling gun was hardly cricket. I'm assuming that the new Western rules will make suitable allowance for jams, and even guns blowing up, rather than encouraging such spoiling tactics?

martin goddard

Yes the gatling is dead and the colonel has jammed!

Colts could usually be recognised by  the etchings of scenes on the revolving bit. Licensed copies were called Colt Brevette.

Mr Henry, who designed the repeating rifle, as seen late in the civil war, was  "done" by Mr Winchester who got hold of the patents! Winchester was a rascal and financier!!!

On the last day of his life Kit Carson disobeyed his doctor by eating a massive buffalo steak, and promptly died.

Comanche Indians attacking  white hunters used a bugler to give signals. Apparently he used standard army signals,  which were known to some of the ex-military hunters.
