Am I right in thinking that the Society generally send out an information pack with their own background interpretation for these battle days?

Here are some thoughts that you chaps might comment on.

1. The water down the flank. 3 inches x 30". Single piece or two pieces?
2. Each player builds 1 unit of cavalry( 3 bases(3x4 cm) = 9 figures) and a general figure( 2 or 3 figures (4x4cm)). This gives them more participation.
3. Each player designs an army ( 4 games will be played= 8 armies)
4. Maybe a sun on a stick as it is a warm day?
5. A countdown system to 36. The table has a perimeter of 18. Double that gives the necessary 36. Maybe the Sudan markers. Chase and sanctary?

I think #2 and #3 in particular are nice ideas, Martin, and not too taxing even for me.

Simon

Let's do that then.

I will get some figures done ASAP as I appreciate that time is need for the painting.

I can do number 1 for you.
Once I know what figures you want for point 2 ? Then I will do my share.
Point I am happy to have a go with ? Still have a lot to learn on the rules.
Basically happy to do what is needed ?

Things are only starting to fall into place Miles. I think we are getting ready at a good speed.
I will put in a few packs of Persians before nay other work so that the team can get to work.

Stewart has pushed ahead and bought a  book all about the battle.
I hope he will report back.

Here is the Cunaxa scenario written by our od friend Peter Sides. Its available  for free online. Designed for DBA/DBM, it might still be of some use.

Martin Smith

That's a handy Peter Sides extract, Sean.
Just as a point of order, I suspect he's got his map back to front - I believe the Greeks and Cyrus's army should have the Euphrates to their right, not left, as per this pic.

Sean Clark

Oh, I didn't pick up on that!

His order of battle is pretty suspect too!

The main sources are Xenophon and Ctesias (doctor to Persian King Artaxerxes) so were both present at the battle. Ctesias is considered unreliable.

Numbers are a problem in ancient battles, especially Persian. It's doubtful whether the commanders even knew and the Greeks always inflated Persian numbers - "myriads"

Modern estimates are by Duncan Head and Richard Nelson.
I can dig these out if interested.

Neil

Colonel Kilgore

Please do dig, Neil!

Thanks,
