His dad was a republican but in a non armed role so as not to engage his brothers who fought for Franco.

I watched my recording of the first episode this evening.

Overall, very interesting. I think the footage [sometimes in tantalisingly short bursts] was all "colourised" rather than originally shot in colour, but it still brought out a lot of fascinating detail: of uniforms, barricades, trenches and other defences, Russian tanks, navy ships, aircraft, houses, markings and flags, etc.

The vast majority of the programme was purely original footage - most of it of troops in action - with a Portillo [in a slightly distracting "shouty" style] voiceover. There were lots of good clear maps too, that helped position the various - and at times confusing -
events.

So, many thanks Stewart for pointing this one out to us all!
