A recent discussion on the latest King Arthur film had got me thinking about what I listen to when painting.

I listen to the Kermode and Mayo film review programme - listened to last weeks this morning whilst painting 16 dead WW1 LW French, prepping some guns for the same and basing three battalions for the same. Roll  on Squarebashing day. I'm also working my way through the History of Rome podcast (170 odd episodes - only about 60 left and worried what I can listen to next), I also listen to BBC radio comedy and some historical drama. Some live football.

What do other people listen to/recommend ? For me it needs to be free and accessible via my PC, I work shifts and often have to listen other then at the original broadcast times. I find listening to something interesting/funny really enhances painting.

i do like the world service. It has quality content. getting a bit fed up with the day by by day Homefront WW1 series. The radio 4 in or time series is good and can be accessed as past episodes. Once again the experts can often be annoying for their lack of clear thinking and communication skills.  Audio books are great.

Generally my own playlists garnered from Spotify and Amazon, otherwise BBC 6 Music or streamed blues, bluegrass and cajun radio.

Sean Clark

Audio books - currently listening to 'Almost a Miracle' , a fantastic if one sided look at the AWI.

Hobby related podcasts - Mainly Meeples and Miniatures

Radio 4 extra - Some great comedy on there plus some interesting dramas and factual programmes.

Podcasts - history ones like the British history podcast (great one BTW), the rhine,  ancient warfare etc, gaming ones (Maples and mini's,  or WSS) and then sports ones such as guardian's football weekly podcasts. ;)

pbeccas (Paul)

I mainly listen to wargaming podcasts.  My favorite five are

Meeples and Miniatures
The Brit, the Yank and the hobby podcast
Game Classy Podcast
The D6 Generation
Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy Podcast

Sean Clark

Just found 'Music from the Spanish Civil War' volumes 1 and 2.

Arriba Espana!

I like to listen to podcasts to, especially Dr Karl, 5 live science, Lunch, Word of mouth, Infinite monkey cage etc. If I have the t.v. on then normally something like Question time or The big questions but they get out of date quickly.

Rarely listen to music, my wife always turns it off, she is not keen on music for some reason?

The Tour de France for the next couple of weeks.

Instrumental music is best for me, no words to distract me. Rick Wakeman's  "Piano Portraits" album is a good mix of rock, pop and classical (from Stairway to Heaven to Debussy). On Youtube I have just discovered several compilations of Patriotric/Military March music.  "Over the hills and far away" by John Tams  is a  one for and a BBC recording of the songs from "The Blue and The Grey".  Youtube war film themes are brilliant of course.
