I think this is an interesting EW raw army.

Dutch

Platoon x 4
Each of:-
PC Pistol
8 rifles
3 LMG
1 Medium mortar  ???
1 AT rifle
Cost =72

MMG platoon
PC pistol
4 MMG
2 Rifle
Cost= 51

Adds up to 339 points.
With another 50 points some  AT guns or ACs mght be had?

I may try his out as small company and raw.

Maybe rather better in defence (with guns) than in attack?

I'm not quite grasping the concept of 340 pt companies.

Are they designed to go up against 400pt lists? Or do both players become limited to 340? And if adding some A/C's or AT guns will get you to 400, what is the purpose of limiting to 340?

I may have missed the whole discussion around unorthodox companies.

Did you not get the scroll Sean?

Any player/army can choose to use 340 points instead of 400.

The compensation is that the player is allowed 6D6 per reinforcement roll instead of 4D6.
Also the player gets +4 to each of his 3 chosen assets. This will of course often give the opponent victory points as the asset total is 12 more.
These are the only 2 changes to the rules for 340 point armies.

This will really suit a player who has very cheap troop such as raw early war armies. Hence my Dutch example.

Because PBI insists that 4 units is the minimum , a late war army would find it more difficult to create 4 "good/useful" units with 340 points.

Late war armies often have platoons of 105 points.  Three of these would be 315 leaving only 25 points for  a fourth unit. Not tasty.

The raw Dutch army I outlined can have 4 platoons and a support platoon all for 340 points.
