Raw late war British  attacking veteran German.
WE made he British raw for the sake of play testing.

The British had 3 foot platoons, 2 support units and a pair of Shermans (Av).
The Germans had 3 foot platoons and a pair of Pak 40 AT guns.

The Germans were outnumbered, but being veteran allowed them plenty of AP and firepower.
The British had plenty of troops but getting them to assault was difficult.e
There were no assaults in the whole game. Most unusual.

The Germans eventually succumbed to greater firepower.
A good win to the British.

It was a long game.  13 turns.
The game was in the balance until the end which made for a better game.

When raw are pinned they find it  very difficult to get assaults in.
The British used smoke to protect their infantry from being pinned. Probably a good tactic.
The British tanks did good work against the German lead infantry position.

The third German foot platoon turned up for the last two turns only.

The Germans put out lots of shooting D6 but killed very few.
e.g. 33 D6= 1 hit.
The British MMGs also had up to 60 D6 shooting.

I think the Germans should have bought some panzerfaustes to kill the tanks?
The defenders with LMG, SMG did pour out a lot of damage. The raw had no option but to go crowded.

Both side's CC were very slow to move. Too many 1 scores.

Overall, I felt that the armies worked correctly under PBI.
Players need more skills to use raw and veteran.
This is good ; average should be the norm.

Veteran will do whatever a player needs, but they are fewer.

Raw need very careful lines of advance if attacking. They are better at defence.
Raw should also be willing to burn up units in order to grind down the defenders. If they lose a unit early on, it should get back on table. Maybe then get up the flanks on arrival.

Colonel Kilgore

That's a nice write-up, and sounds like a very good game. Thanks too for sharing your tactical thoughts here, Martin.

As someone who usually plays German, I think it's always a good idea to bring along a few Panzerfausts, as it keeps the enemy guessing, and wary of approaching infantry too closely.
