Railway track in PBI

We used railway track instead of the here to there road in our PBI game last night.
It was treated identically to a road, but the visual change was nice.
If t were to be the left to right road replacement then any dog leg or T junction would invalidate it.Although I do have some points and curves that might over come this? Too messy unless the offset is minimal.
The other problem is that the here to there railway would cut through buildings, which is probably acceptable?

I will experiment further.

For clarity; this is a visual option not a rule change option.

I will get a picture of it too.

Instead of a T junction, you could have the railway run into a station terminus building in the middle of the board and then a separate road making up the other part of the crossways feature.

I will get Miles to make me a turntable.
Alternatively it could be a new German railway meing up with an old Russian one??

Miles already has the railway built into his recent SCW "special piece", but this would need to "tab" on the short edge for PBI, I think?

We could also have a level crossing (or even a bridge?) with road crossing rail?

And the non-continuing rail of a T-junction could be non-functioning destroyed railway, potentially, just for show?

At last we can get railway modellers to join this hobby?

martin :)

Colonel Kilgore

Indeed. It's a waste of good modelling skills solely applying them to toy railways, when folk can play with toy soldiers too :)

Dapol make turntables, it's the old Airfix one.
But like Simon says railway one way and a Station with road the other ?
Best of both worlds. Great in the Desert or Russia ?

Maybe visually a railway with the other half shown as a destroyed railway to preseve the lok but make it clear which part is road equivalent.
I think I will make 3ft of destroyed railway. Bent rails with explosions???

Colonel Kilgore

That was the general idea, Martin!

Funnily enough Russia did not make that much use of turntables. They opted like the US to favour triangular reversing sidings/loops in more open spaces since they were a lot cheaper... There is one in Dushak, Turkmenistan, on the former Russian built TransCaspian Rly still visible on Google maps. I was going to model it for the RCW MallMiss vs Tashkent Soviet clash in 1918.

I detect a lot of railway modeller interest in this (possibly not?).

I don't know what you mean Martin ?
If I had the money and the space ?
I do want to do a Russian train and a German train for WW1 and WW2 or at least combine them, as future projects.
Must have a look at Ironclads railway ?
