Ive set up the table for a solo run through the new PBI. It'll be US v Germans.

I've circled the objectives. Attackers will be starting from the bottom of the picture. I've used all sorts of things to denote partial squares. As its just me playing it shouldn't get too confusing.

I'll sort the two armies out and may get a chance to make a start later or on Boxing Day.

I'll record progress in this thread with questions and thoughts.

Looks good, Sean. Looking forward to any report you may get a chance to post - I love solo games 👍👍

Colonel Kilgore

Good luck with this, Sean.

To get in character will you be supping beer when playing the Germans and maybe something a bit stronger during the Russian turns?  ;)

US Ranger Company - veteran

CC SMG Tom Hanks
3 platoons armed with garands each of:
PC
1 BAR
3 garands
1 bazooka

1 mortar platoon:
PC with pistol
1 garand
2 light mortars

3 x M4/75

Ze Germans

CC Rifle von Klinkerhoffen
Average
1st platoon:
PC rifle
6 rifles
3 MG42s
4 PzFausts
2 Hanomags

2nd amd 3rd platoon the same as the above minus the Hanomags

3 STUGs

Not sure if the above fits with the current rules, especially the 2 Hanomags. They're there just as mobile fire support rather than transportation.

I'll set up this afternoon amd see how we go.

I've made a start on my first foray into the new PBI.

I'm feeling rather pleased with myself. The picture shows the result of the US first turn asset using HE which has resulted in this square of Germans being pinned. Which I've denoted...with a pin. Genius!

Of note on page 52 it says that the HE markers are

'Only row (left to right) or square formation allowed'...

I think this may be a hangover from previously  as no matter how I arrange my 2 HE markers I can only make a line, not a square 😆

More soon!

Colonel Kilgore

Very clever, well done Sean!

I think there are currently still a few such "old rule" hangovers - I'm about a third of the way through a deep read of the master rulebook document, which I'll get back to Martin by the end of my hols.

Have you found the bit where it says you need a 6 to score a hit when shooting?

Colonel Kilgore

That doesn't ring a bell - I think I'm at about page 41. Can you tell me where you found that, please Sean?

Simon

John Watson

I think that's the problem Simon. He couldn't find it.

Thanks John. I've just seen Sean's other posts, which didn't show up for me earlier for some reason (i.e. I had to select 'Updated Topics', and not 'Unread Posts' to see them on my phone).

Colonel Kilgore

I think you're both right - it seems to be assumed but never stated...

Americans take cover in the undergrowth having attracted fire from the Germans in the wood beyond.

Wisely the American Commander uses his smoke asset to cover the advance on the left hand objective.

Unfortunately, 3 of the smoke covered squares blow away at the end of the turn.

Here's a picture of my ingenious method of tracking the countdown from 36. Six dice showing their 6, reducing one dice down at a time as the players roll for countdown at the end of their turn. You'll all be doing it tomorrow!  ;D

Thoroughly enjoying my first go at 2020 PBI. It has made me go back to 3 other versions to see how they compare for things like smoke, reinforcements and motivation.

Who remembers when it cost 1.5 AP to leave a partial square?

Colonel Kilgore

1.5 AP for an action?! Clearly things have come a long way since then  ;D

I do like your mix of overhead and "in the action" photos, Sean, and am glad you're enjoying diving back into PBI.
