This was suggested during our game this weekend... I kind 'a like it. It will make ships especially ironclads last longer and by that extension games. We are going to test this out next game.

Critical Damage alternate rule

When a ship reaches a multiple of five on its hit point log indicating a critical damage roll the ship rolls a deflection roll for the type of gun that caused the ship to reach that critical hit point. If the ship makes the save it suffers no critical damage that time. If it fails roll 2D6 on the critical damage chart as normal. Forts still always lose a gun on a multiple of 5.

Jerry the whole idea of the Critical Roll especially with Ironclads is to try and wear them down. When you play against the likes of the Virginia the only way to destroy the ship say if it catches fire for a while the Hull points get eroded away, and things like that ?
HI is meant to be a "Short" game so you can play several of them in a session not a long protracted game. Otherwise everyone gets a big ship each and just "Slugs" it out ! Oh What Fun that is ! Not.....
We want people to use Wooden gunboats, if it gets in close it might cause that Double 6 on an Ironclad? Oooops !
Unlikely but Sean will remember a Father and Son played a demonstration game at Salute (2015 I think ?) 3 times caused Critical hits 3 times blew his Dad's ships out of the Water ! He was a happy bunny !
That's the fun of the game.
Now for those that want to take it more seriously, Historically correct and have a longer game then please do look at changing the critical hits, dumb them down a bit !
