Sometime ago I bought an Ancient British/Gaul army from eBay and when it arrived I put it away to look at later.

It is later now and on looking through it, I have quite a sizeable army of foot, cavalry and chariots. There are 6 chariots. Am I right in thinking they will make 2 units?

The figures are a real mix, with most of them in plastic. I'm assuming they are the Plastic Soldier Company plastic. They are quite large compared to the metals, but from tabletop difference I think they'll be ok. They're all painted anyway so they'll be what I use for now for C&K. I'll probably use them as Gauls initially as there is quite a few cavalry.

Thank you
Sean

Yes Sean 3 chariots make one unit. So 6 make 2 units. Plastic Soldier Co have Gallic troops in their newer range of figures in hard plastic and they are the only company that I know of that do. If the figures are soft plastic they could be Airfix ancient British or Italeri Gauls. If you are coming down on Saturday for MexRev then if you bring a sample the hive mind can give an opinion.

Thanks John. I've checked the PSC site and you're  right, they're the Gallic figures. On the large side for 15mm.

I would really like to see a British army  in CK.
I believe they will be difficult to win with.

A sample Briton army

4 Chariot units (1 veteran 1 Elite)
2 Veteran armoured close order foot
4 Levy close order foot
4 units mounted skirmishers
7 units foot skirmishers
4 Auxiliary foot
2 generals

Lots of units.
Maybe the levy should stay on one flank or at the back to give support?
No shooterers  :(
Plenty of skirmishers.

Did the British not have any archers then ?
Miles

Light infantry slingers Miles, so covered by foot skirmishers. The chariots were crewed by a driver and javelin man/men.

I'll need a box or 2 of the PSC  chariots to make this army. I have enough infantry.

How are people depicting the difference between veteran and regular and also close order amd auxiliary? I know technically 4 figs for close order and 3 for auxilia but if you don't have enough of one type are people just denoting them with a marker or something?

I ask because all of my infantry are based in 3's. It's a simple job to rebase some on to 4 fig bases, but just wondering what the consensus is with those who've played a bit before I get the scalpel out.

A quandary Sean!

1. Stewart and Mike use sabots. Just like the ECW ones. Then you can just say "This  sabot is auxiliary " etc..

2. You could use Lolly sticks from a craft seller and label/place them n front of each unit. They are very cheap.

3. You could say that units in column are close order . Units in line are auxiliary.

4. Quality. Assume all units are trained but mark veterans with a "post it" note underneath the unit. Levy place a different colour post it note.

There are lots of better ideas out there  that members will bring to this.

The Key is clarity I think.

My very nearly complete Vikings have 4 to a base CO, 3 to a base auxiliaries. The elite have a big flag and quartered shields, the veterans have smaller flags and quartered shields, the trained have smaller flags and halved shields and the levy have smaller flags and single colour shields. The auxiliaries do not have flags. I haven't used them yet but I hope this works.

Can do what I am going to have to do with my American Indians. LEave an area of the base clear but painted brightly in a colour.  This become the command base for the unit then it can follow the normal process used in so many other PP rules. On right Vet, middle Average, etc.

Yes, I know we love flags but it just doesn't seem right to have mohawks with flags!.

All great ideas. I have loads of sabots for ECW so that might be the way to go first. It will solve the issue of worrying about how many of the bases I convert to close order and how many I leave as 3's.

Eye update....I'm still waiting for my 10am operation 🙄
