Wednesday  15th March.
John v martin

Game 1. Crusaders defending against warband Germans.
Crusader good win.

Game 2. Crusaders v Indians. Indians defending.  Indian win.
The Indians got a free hill and  thus had a row of hills to defend.
This was OK but martin decided to advance off the hills.
Lots and lots of fights.
The lack of armour caused the Indians to decline in unit size more quickly than the armoured crusaders. This was because they lost their skirmishers too soon, thus the hits went on the unarmoured close order troops.
The Indians had more units than the crusaders so were able to hold more zones and have more zones that could punch out. This also allowed them to have plenty of rear support.
The Indians benefitted in most fights by having 4 close order units +2 D6. It does really help.
The Indian elephants were good value and none of the 7  died.
An Indian general died and a crusader one too. Very bloody.
John's crusader brethren zone fought every turn of the game.

Both good games. We won one each. Which was nice.

Sounds good, chaps.

Did the rules behave fully as they should?

I would say so. The hammer of God worked well in the first game against the Germans, who had no bow fire to shoot up the crusaders.
In the second game the Indians had shooting power which helped them somewhat. Also the brethren drew two assaults that they should have won easily. The other failure is that in six attempts the brethren failed to get single 9+ for unit destruction. As martin said the elephants did not die, mainly because I could not get any hits on them, even when I was winning fights. I wonder if elephants should be targetable in a pursuit and breakthrough. Elephants are also very cheap.
All in all a very good day and lunch, thank you Martin.

Maybe give them something in a pursuit intense.

Perhaps if the zone they are in suffers pursuit they become uncontrollable. 1-4 one friendly unit is destroyed, 5-6 one winning unit is destroyed. The opposite rolls if your elephants win the fight and gain pursuit, 1-4 one losing unit wiped out but 5-6 one of yours. After this they are removed.

That would certainly make fielding elephants interesting.

Maybe we should try it out lol

Derek

Colonel Kilgore

Sounds like something to try as a house rule, rather than complicate the official main rules?

Simon

Official rules are not finalised yet.   I seem to recall that historically elephants were prone to going beserk and doing damage to both sides in a fight.  Maybe this could ne a way to make them less predictable.

Derek

John Watson

You are right with that Derek. The best tactic, apparently, was to goad the elephant by getting light infantry skirmishers up close and annoying the beast. If successful, the elephant would not be seriously hurt but would lose its temper and run amok. Because it could not differentiate between friend or foe it was pot luck who got trampled.

Which I think is why Indian drivers were given a stake and a mallet to kill the pachyderm in such cases.

Which means we might end up with two different rules, depending on elephant owner...?

I personally think this is all taking C&K too far. If people want such "chrome", there are plenty of other Ancients rules out there with flaming pigs, scythed chariots, light-medium infantry with self-loading slings, etc. I like the simplicity of C&K, which is something of a return to original DBA-like simplicity and ease of play without the gaminess that crept into DBM etc.

But I'm sure that others will think differently :)

This is all above my head.

I'm just wondering how many games of C&K Martin and Stewart have played

For myself I have played about 100.
About 10 different opponents.
The rules are all but done.
I need to do examples, pictures and get Les to have a look over it.
Some small matters (the elephant in the room) are still coming up.

I for one are happy with the game as it gives me a good brain workout with enjoyment too.

Anyone who contributes to rule sets obviously wants that rule set to conform to their wants.
CK  will hopefully address a wider audience's wants?
The problem for CK is that there are a lot of other rulesets out there. A rule set needs a lot of pushing to become popular.
I am not ready to devote a large amount of time to CK publicity which is a shame but that is the way I share out me time.
I am hoping our RFCM community will play CK, which create a base of players who know the game?

Here goes......

Hi Sean,
Since we started play testing C&K I have played about twice a week, I think Martins 100:is a bit low.

Regards Elephants, that effect mounted units in the same square or in fighting who ever they belong to.
