Interesting little article on the BBC today - there is archaeological evidence that they brought horses (and dogs, and maybe pigs) to Britain from Scandinavia.

The Vikings were colonists too - so fully capable of transporting livestock on ships. The ships that transported William's invasion force depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry were essentially the same design... Scandinavian Knarr (merchantmen) were higher and wider than longships but essentially the same design.
