I got longships a while ago but I'm now just starting to really look at it... the curse of the busy and constantly distracted I guess. :)

Anyway, I know I can do it (in theory) but do you see any issue with the use of DBx style basing for troops vs. the sizes in the rules. I can still differentiate between the various classes of troops - I won't go into details but the depth and No. of figs on the bases will be the key for that. But all the bases would be 4 cm wide and not as deep vs the 3cm square.

I ask because that's how my armies are done at present and I'd like to keep to that as it does make figures more useful for other rules sets. It also matches my potential opponents forces.

Anyway the biggest issue I can see is that 5 wide (and 2 deep) there would be some overlap a little and be awkward. I assume that's not a huge issue as I can cope with that but I thought I'd ask how often are 9 or 10 base sized units really used?

Thanks in advance.

The usual unit size would be 8 bases giving you a frontage of 16cm. Should fit  OKish. You will get fewbases killed so the fit would get better with death?

OK thanks for the quick reply.

I do need to pick up some 'killed' bases - and other stuff from PP such as those nice ship models but I thought that should work. :)

Another thought might be to put your bases in 4 ranks and treat the first two ranks as the front rank.  This would give  a sqaure footprint for the unit and fit it nicely into the square grid??

Not even the Donald could think of that one!
