Ben & I popped into the GW shop in Southampton yesterday. Had a little impromtu painting lesson, as the shop was quiet with the manager Rod, using the new GW paints and washes. The washes now, do not stain the model as much, running more into the recesses, so do not require 'watering down' with medium as they used to. Rod's lesson was a nice touch, also helped with the understanding of using of their contrast paints and washes. The big change being if you use the washes such as Agrax Earthshade it will apply to the model much lighter than previously, so if using lighter washes you may need to go a shade or two darker for the desired efffect.

Thanks, Dave, good to know. Just to be clear - they have changed the formula of Agrax Earthshade (making it stain less) rather than it simply staining less when applied over contrast paints?

I have not got on with GW washes in the past precisely because of the staining...

Hi Simon
Yes, the formula of the washes has been changed. From the conversation yesterday, they are now designed to flow into the creases rather than 'stain' the model, to fit with the new contrast paint system. With the old washes I used to dilute them with at least half/three quarters medium to reduce the staining. Now the effect is more akin to a pin wash, into the creases, you can still dilute them to reduce the effect but they don't stain heavily like they used to.

Hope that helps?

Perfect, Dave - that precisely answers my question, thank you!
