The other one. A old friend of ours has a very good blog, Keep your Powder Dry. He bases his pokes and Musketeers on a slightly larger basing system than the standard sabot size.
So I was thinking if you put the Pikes and command on a 30 x 40 instead they would possibly look better ? You could have 5-6 pikes up front rather than 3 ? With 3-4 figures for command. A very crowded base, yes but if done well might look good ?
Here is a picture of a sabot with what I intend ?
I would still have the 30mm frontage to each base, but the command/pike base would have that extra 10mm depth, hopefully holding a few more figures.

Hello Miles
I do have a couple  of pike bases just like that.
It looks better, but makes a  player paint and buy more figures.
RFCM rules try to keep player costs to a minimum as a policy.
Fine and great if it does not put them off building an army.
Good luck with your army.

I think they would look splendid. I went the easy route,  but if doing them again would certainly use a 3x4 base and probably 5 or 6 pike figures, plus a couple of command.

I agree. I think the deeper pike element of a unit looks very good. If the frontage remains constant it doesn't matter if your opponent is all 30mm squares.

Just as an interest at the moment, any one sell the sabot in the required size TO FIT 40X30?

Warbases almost certainly will custom make one at a very resonable price.

Dave as Sean says but the only problem would be the Musketeers bases would have to grow as well, unless you do what Radar has done and add a Sergeant or two behind them, with a dog here and there to fill up the space behind ?
So do we have an opinion that all 3 bases could be 30 x 40 ? With a bit of space behind the musketeers ?
You know me Martin I am happy to buy more figures and heads, so the extra cost of the figures I am happy to fork out, if the base looks that bit more special and personal?
I must admit I ve spent £150 or so on a load of books just to get my knowledge of the period just that little bit better, (Hopefully!)

Ben is considering building a ECW Scots army, so this may be the way to go. Quite like the idea of more depth to the units, Radar's blog works well.

I use 40 x 20mm for my basing my ECW figs - well that is a 'half base' for the rules. My mounted is 40 x 30 for a full base - 20 x 30 for a half base. I have not had any issues with this with the rules.

That allows for a nice looking set of models. Here is a quick pic as a demonstration - sorry the pic is small.

When I converted my armies, I rebased the pike elements to have 4/6 pike and 2 command figures (1 is a flag) on a 30mmx40mm base. Looks much better.

Also made all the pistol armed cavalry 4 to a base and chargers 3 which also works. Adds a bit of bulk!

You know how they say talk is dangerous? This has me thinking about my own collection. However I have 26 foot regiments so it would be a sizeable undertaking, though it would only be the pike bases that I altered. Maybe once one or two toher projects have been completed. It would mean changing all of my sabots ...

Products for Wargamers makes good sabots/movement trays. Worth a look.

I know what you are saying. I have a very good collection of 15mm on not great bases (or basing) for DBR. I really want to rebase but have yet to take the plunge...

Most companies who make these type of Sabots would make a 40 x30 sabot.
As Sean says, it's whether you change the Musket bases or keep them as they are ?
It's just change the Pike/Command base to the largest size ?
So is it  just a case of adapt the sabots to accommodate the large middle base, as I did in the original picture? Or change all the sabots ? I think the former would be easier.
So with just a few extra figures a little bit of character can be added to each "Regiment"

Alternatively you could add blank but textured and/or flocked scenic bases to avoid having the musketeers slide about. This avoids having to rebase the musketeers, having to paint up extra figures to flesh out the new depth, and having to buy more figures if necessary. It all boils down to personal preference/finances/motivation.
