Saw this on a WW1 Association site whilst doing some research, shows the old British Regiments - not sure of the date but the inference was 1914.

Might be of interest?

That is a great Map Dave.
So many regiments so few men.

Very good.

That is a fascinating map, Dave - thanks for sharing.

Still scratching my head as to how my Somerset-based family members ended up in the Hampshire regiment...

Sometimes Simon, men would enlist in one Regt only to find when they reached the transit depots, other units were understrength so they were moved to those Regt's to make up the numbers. Could be the case?

Same for my great uncle. Born and bred in north London only to find himself in the 6th Somerset Light Infantry. He was killed on 25th August at Delville Wood having recently relieved the South Africans.

Not in my case, as I believer they were already in the Territorials before the War (in a cyclist battalion). Nor had the family moved, so I'm thinking it must have been deliberate...

Simon have you checked their service records. It may be recorded in them, bit of research but should answer the question!

Good point Dave. I have medals, photos, swagger stick and remains of a Russian sword, and also did some research at the regimental museum.

But I think I failed to pull the actual service records!

Thanks,

Simon
