Enthused by todays activities and seeing Rich and Stewarts Scottish armies today, I think a Covenanter army might go on my list to Santa.

Looking at the list in the book, I cant work out what Scottish Lancers do. They count as charger cavalry which is fine. But in the army list, it says you can havr 0-4 units of Lancers, some pistolers, and the rest must be charger cavalry.

If they count as charger cavalry anyway, why is there a separate  reference  to them? What am i missing?

I don't know Sean, but they do loot baggage well.

I love Philip Haytyhornthwaite's illustration of a Scottish lancer mounted on a horse of very few hands.

Scottish Lancers are something a bit different to buy and we all love that!  They wouldn't really be much good against proper cavalry on big horses but were good at scouting, harassing and, that old Scottish favourite, looting from the English!

I'll make a proposal that Scottish Lancers have the aggressive characteristic similar to charger cavalry as they do currently, but only keep it for one charge, after which it is automatically removed rather than rolling for it.

This would both represent the fact their small ponies would be good for one good charge and the fact that the lances most likely weren't much use either so they have to resort to their swords.

Not sure whether this ought to be reflected with a minor points reduction?

Any thoughts, comments, ideas or suggestions?

Ben is interested in building a ECW Scots army, he wants highlanders units. Not knowing much on this range what would he need to build a reasonable army?

A lot of Montrose's army and the most effective part were in fact Irish and Martin had included some nice figures in the range.  The highlanders really add bulk and a bit of colour though!  Montrose's army also has some lovely flags!

Thanks Richard, how many units would Ben need?

The covenanter army is more mainstream.
The Montrose army is pretty poor by most standards in ROF.
The Covenanter army is fine in ROF but Montrose army would be hard work to win with I reckon.
Although he is the representative of the Royalist cause in Scotland.

You need a  pot of "hodden grey" paint for your Scots.
I like that colour.

Dave,

The Covenanter Army I fielded on Saturday morning was: 9 Foote Regiments Plus A unit of Highlanders; 2 Dragoon units; 3 Scottish Lancer units and 3 Pistoler cavalry units; 4 light field guns and 1 Medium gun.

I'm pretty sure Aberdeen (the man) had Highlanders in his Covenanter command.

And how did it get on, Richard?

Thanks Richard, he can plan from that.

And for more inspiration, here's a fine blog (linked from a post today on TMP) by a former member of this Forum - featuring the army of Montrose:
