After being inspired by Saturday's games (even if my troops expired), I am setting about building a couple of late war armies (British and German) in 12mm.

Does anyone have any views on the accuracy of the Flames of War painting guides for the period.  They look helpfully simple and accessible!

Simon,

That's a good find. I have been putting off the task of rooting through my back catalogue of Wargames Illustrated for the FoW articles of WW1 (although they were probably only in the last year or two, and probably not that hard to find really).

If I could add to your request:

a) does anyone have an easy conversion from the stated colours to equivalents in the "normal" Vallejo ranges?
b) and if anyone can point to the Wargames Illustrated issues with the WW1 painting articles, that would be a plus too, please!

Many thanks,

Simon (Mk II)

For my figures I sprayed  undercoat black, then sprayed appropriate colour, brown (British), grey German, then picked out the webbing and equipment, weapons and flesh. Then used army painter mid tone then matt varnish.
If you stretch to 15mm you would have armies for the Cambrai day if you can make it.

Stewart,

Do you remember which brown and grey you used for the main spraying?

There was a guide to painting 1915 era troops in WI 328/Feb 15.

Simon III,

That is indeed perfect - many thanks!

So now I know what happened to "Brown Violet"...

Cheers,

Simon I used humbrol spray paints, I think is was 29 brown for the British and 165 sea grey for the Germans.
Not exactly correct but these are frontline troops with hard fighting behind them not parade ground dolls. Once the equipment is picked out and a wash applied I think the result is good enough for the games table.

Thanks Stewart - sounds good enough for me!
