Query on helmeted heads for British LW

This weekend's Square Bashing extravaganza has tempted me into yet another period, and I'm toying with the idea of a British 1917 army for the next such event, as well as Stewart & Martin's Cambrai event in the summer.

I would like to put helmets on some figures (high command, cavalry) that are only sold as Early War. There doesn't seem to be a specific WW1 British helmeted head set, but do folk have any experience with the WW2 set #40, and whether this would be suitable, please?

Or should I be lobbying Martin for yet more heads / figures...?

Many thanks!

Simon

Like it, especially the cavalry in a helmet. This would go well for the proposed Cambrai game?

Colonel Kilgore

That was the plan!

Do you think WW2 tin hats would work in this scale for WW1?

Leman (Andy)

Just had a look at the WWI British figures and the WWII helmeted heads. TBH I can't see a difference.  I think your main problem may be gas mask cases for later cavalry - greenstuff (?).

Colonel Kilgore

Thanks Leman - that's very helpful.

Greenstuff might be an option (if I can make a decent fist of it), or of course we may find they all happen to have left their gas masks back in camp on the day of the battle  ;)

I agree, sounds like a plan. Unless Martin has a new model in Santa's sack?

Best to all

Hello
The smooth Brit helmet would be fine for WW1 too. I labelled it because the scrim brit helmet would be wrong for WW1.  I can add a cloth covered WW1 brit helmet if that is useful??

Colonel Kilgore

That would be very kind!

I'm all for variety...

A cloth covered helmet would be great. Among other uses I would update the EW British Higher Command to LW. Also for Later War ANZAC in a mix of helmet & slouch hat, or to even cut the helmet off to attach to the back of some of those figures in slouch hats. :)

Colonel Kilgore

I've just spotted that WW1 British pack 3 is "Brit us [sic] cavalry late war (1 pose)" and pack 4 is "British late war cavalry command".

Have they always been there and staring me in the face but I missed them?

And presumably these are mounted (there are no pictures): could someone please fill me in?

Hi CK

I asked Martin to do these for me as a special, they have the new cloth covered helmet plus a gas mask case on the chest. Martin has done a really good job on these. The figures are the sword figure from the early war set converted, plus bugler and officer.

Best wishes

Hi Wardy,

Many thanks - that makes sense. Especially as big red "New" stickers have been applied to both today on the PP website!

Hopefully the cloth-covered LW helmet will also make its appearance under Heads and Odds in due course?

I now have a dilemma: I'd bought a load of EW cavalry to convert: do I take the coward's way out...? I guess I could always model some with the gasmasks on the back, as per the Osprey title, and stick some "nosebag" horse gasmasks on. But I couldn't possibly do as good a job...

Perhaps some photos in due course of the painted items?

Cheers,

Simon

Hi CK
Painting is slow at the moment, I only have one working hand. Will stick on a photo unpainted so you can see them hopefully Monday pm. I would mix and match, your a good model man they will look great 😀

Hi Guys,
Find picture of Martin's new late war WWI Cav.

Those figures look good. I'll have to buy some otherwise how will my late war British can't get to have tea in Berlin before tea time when I break through, which is bound to happen the next game I have. Well once I have some Scots in helmet to boast the army (hint hint).
