The 5x3 would give a frontage of 5 zones (assuming 12" frontage per zone).
An ancients game will usually see the army  laid out in a row, rather than the variation found in most other periods.

Using 12" scenery pieces gives only 5 zones of frontage.
This is too few to allow variation in terms of weakness and strength.
I am seeking to prevent the "seen your plan and quickly re deploy my army" type games.
That  would happen if the crisis point is nearby the bulk of the army.

I want the army to have weak spots that are difficult to cover over.

Ideally i would like an 8 zone frontage, but that  would cause a big cloth width if the zones are wide.
Assuming that each zone needs to be bigger than 6".

Once again, the armies will be fighting mostly on a continuous line.
A 6" square gives enough frontage for 1 unit only. Not good.

Solutions will arise, fear not. Challenges in game design are always interesting.

Games so far have been played on a grid of 8x8 squares.
Upon a grid that is 8 zones wide and 4 zones deep.
Early days.

It is nice for RFCM members to see how RFCM games are "born" and "mature".
Of course, most RFCM rule sets are very different when comparing first and final versions.
