I was told today that some players think they can view the HI order cards (whole stack) and then choose the ones they want.
This is not the intention and am surprised that anyone thought it , but  folk are strange.

The rules state "once the  cards are taken the player may look at them..."

Would that imply to you that you can select the cards you want from the pack, or would it lead you to think that you draw the cards and then look??

Maybe more explanation is needed for this apparently confusing concept?

;D ;D ;D English teaching doesn't half seem to have gone to pot since the National Curriculum started.

I can only assume this is a complete one off. Of all the people I know who play Hammerin Iron, not one has ever interpreted the rules this way.

So just to make this clear:
So like in a game of Poker. Each deck is shuffled and placed down. Then 5 cards is the picked from the top of either deck of Smoke or Gun Ports cards and given to a particular ship ? Then you use 4 or 5 of the cards you have chosen in the order you think will benefit(or not !) your ship to progress in the game.
Otherwise if you don't do this you might as well just make the orders up as you go !

Just shows how the education of our children has changed, I remember when every comma and colon was examined and debated from WRG 3-4-5-6 edition rules.

As I have mentioned earlier. The HI card order concept is difficult for some players, but I must keep seeking to clarify RFCM rules so that we can play the games.

The problem often comes from my making up an idea and assuming that because it seems easy to me it will be easy for others. They do not have the advantage of having sat for a long time thinking about it. Instead they read it in the rules and need to comprehend it for themselves.

The piggy chase is a prime example of what I think is easy, but confounds many players.
The other apparent confusion comes with the 21 point countdown. Many players say it is very difficult to understand.

This is a marketing problem for RFCM rules. A majority of prospective players want to either have rules that are just like the ones they are used to, or rules that are simple.

The RFCM rules can live without wide acclaim if the players that do buy them enjoy the game rigour.

They are simple concepts that are the mechanics that make RFCM games work. They dont follow a particular trend, so I think people assume they are either too complex or no good.

Youtube channels are full of people playing Black Powder, Sharp Practice or Chain of Command. You'd be forgiven for thinking there were no other rules on the market.

Which do you want ? The original ones ? The set which has been cut up? And or the set that has not ?  Or the copied ones in blue card and a cream/brown card laminated? I am happy to send you any combination?  If you have either of these USS Conestoga or USS Lafayette and USS Ouachita if you have any of these ? If you have them all I am happy to pay for the others ?
