My wider knowledge of the Ancients period is somewhat limited. So on seeing an episode of the Rest is History podcast, titled 'Persians', it peeked my interest.

Call me silly, but it's only now that I realise that the Parthians were the second great dynasty of the Persians, preceeded by the Achemenids and followed by the Sassanians.

Well would you Adam and Eve it? They ruled from around 250BC to 250AD and fought Rome quite a lot, both Republican and Imperial versions.

So now I'm thinking if C&K gets going, a Parthian army will be my first. I seem to remember Dave Marcroft having a beautiful Parthian army.

Hadrian is the poor chap who threw himself at the Parthians and got worn down.
I still have that Parthian army.
This might lean the first CK book/rules  toward Rome and it's empire?

Well, that would make sense! Three armies produced by Peter Pig for the era.

I think this is a good idea. You want some USP. You could focus on Imperial Rome from the 1st to 3rd Century. So you have the core of that range already.  Each opponent would be a 'pack' offering different challenges for the Romans, almost like a PITS experience.  You would have rule 'packs' for -

  • Dacian Wars
  • Parthian Wars
  • Jewish Revolt
  • Marcomannic Wars
  • Civil Wars
  • Persian wars

You have the Romans , Germans & Parthians. Dacians are easily converted from the Germans. Persians can be extended from the Parthians (with a bit of Asavaran). Jews are small range

SO you quite a range from set piece battles, siege, guerrilla warfare and patrolling the Roman frontier

The Art of Persia on BBC iPlayer is well worth a watch - it'll get you thinking Persia. An amazing civilisation.

The Parthians probably  originated in central asia. The Achemenids were taken over by Alexander, followed by his successors. "Parthian" horse archers appear in both Achemenid and Diadochi (Alexander's immediate successors) armies but they may not be related, just derived from a tribal name. The Parthians proper took over the Eastern provinces of the Seleucid empire in the 200s BC and took over the Greek / Hellenistic settlers. They fought the Seleucids and then th Romans when they conquered the Seleucids.
At various stages the Parthians fielded Hellenistic troops, differing ratios of horse archers and cataphracts, cataphract  camels (once only!) and even a General on an elephant IIRC.
The Sassanids  considered themselves the true successors of the Achemenids and consciously modelled themselves on the ancient Persian empire. It's not certain whether they completely ousted the Parthians or simply absorbed them.
It's probably more accurate to think of it as a succession of Iranian dynasties, as the later were probably not "Persian" in the ethnic  sense, but even the Achemenid empire was of the empire of the Persians and the Medes, so set the precedent .

You are not alone iirc the Sassanids refused to recognise the existence of the Parthians.
