Hmm! Now which rules to use.

OK, As my Poles and Cossacks are being churned out. I am starting to wonder which ruleset to use.

1-By Fire and Sword

2-Regiment of Foot---Old not new. (Hate grids on my table)

3-George Gush/WRG

4-FoG

I am leaning towards RoF currently as I have all my ECW/ACW/Samurai/Viking/Saxon based for same. BFaS and FoG are maybe a bit to involved for me. I will have to rebase my Winged Hussars to use RoF but was going to redo all their Lances and Pennants anyway.

Anyone got any other suggestions for me to look at?

I find that DBR worked well fo  English Civil War - might be good for Poles & Cosacks too? It was somehow much more fun than the DBM / DBMM series.

I also enjoyed the George Gush WRG rules when I was starting out several decades ago. I liked his ECW Airfix Guide that showcased the rules, and found them fun. Very much of its era, but should still be good for relatively small Renaissance battles?

TBH I did not gel with any WRG/DBX stuff. Found it far too abstract. Not played a lot nof ECW but my preferred set is ROF 1, not because I hate grids (massive fan of SB and TBB) but it just had more of a Civil War feel to me. Actually it's a brave man who comes on this forum and expresses a dislike for gridded games.

I hated all the book keeping in George Gush's rules, so I would avoid them. I have played new RoF but not the old. I liked them but then I am OK with grids. I have played FOGR a lot and I think they are the best of the FOG systems. I have played Baroque once and found it to be good fun and fairly quick to pick up.

Doubt that very much Terry. I do find your input very interesting. Got to admit I just couldn't get into even FOGR. The sequence of play seemed excessively convoluted, not to mention the long drawn out hacking matches when pike blocks met. Really tedious stuff. Also disliked the +  ++ and -  --  factor thing and the goodness knows how many pages the charts covered. They were very popular in my last club but for me the best bit of the game was the pub afterwards. Very pretty book though - shame about the game inside.

Baroque is worth looking at, rather a different approach but quite easy to pick up.

I've also used 'For King & Parliament' for ECW, which might convert readily enough but it's another grid based game.

Not a period I play Terry, but RoF would be my choice knowing how straight forward PP rules are particularly if you know the RCFM system.

A lot of the old rule systems apart from the Airfix ones, have dated and can have a lot of data to work through.

By Fire and sword are perfect and really designed for this period. They are not a bad set of rules either so I would recommend you have a look at them.

Yes! I have Players Edition and Task force and am currently basing for that ruleset. But Big question is--Do I want to learn a new set or not?

I  would also vote for By Fire and Sword rules, they are ideal for the ebb and flow of large cavalry battles, very important when your main army is the Tartar Crimean Khanate. I am also looking forward to their ECW rules which they were promising for this years Salute but have yet to appear. My most recent purchases were Martin's Scots ECW for which I am using BFAS basing and will use them both as mercenary regiments during the Deluge and as my first ECW army.

@SimonC Thanks for that! I registered on the forum. See a lot of names I know from years ago. Cannot see where to go from there to try to playtest.
