Whilst reading Hastings' Vietnam, I was listening to Beevor's book on the SCW.

A really good listen. The narrator is the same one as for several of Beevor's books and gives the subject a real gravitas with his pacing and tone.

If you haven't tried Audible you can generally sign up for free for one month which gives you a book for nothing. I'd recommend this one as your choice.

What a great book Sean.
What confused me was the length and quantity of the names.

Yes, the narrator manages to get his tongue around the names pretty well. I'd have struggled reading this one myself as it's difficult to keep track of who is who.

What I found really terrible was the civilian deaths where each side would commit atrocities, burning people in churches and such like. Really awful.

That's the Horrors of a Civil War. In the so called Just Name of their cause they think they have the right to be butchers. It still amazes me how Stalin got away with what he done ? In the name of the Motherland ?
Of course we can put a continuous list up here of these type of people.
Like you say these books now are able to put the story right nowadays, whereas a few decades ago they wouldn't have been possible. The Aubio book is a great way to access these types of books. It would take me several weeks to read something like that.
