Hi, question from a friend who has a large WOTR collection and is looking for a new rule set:- will it be possible to play the new rules without casualty removal? Cheers

John,

You'd need some means of recording eighths of a unit, as well as which of two formations (ordered, or not) it is in.

Hope that helps?

You might use a D6?
A unit has 8 increments of life as Simon says.
After 6 increments the unit disperses. Thus use a D6 and record the 1-6 increments.
After 6 remove the unit.
So a D6 would be needed for every unit....

More thoughts available if needed.

Simon Clarke came up with a way of basing ACW units as a single base and using a 7mm dice holder and dice to record losses. Different coloured dice can also show the troop status as well ie. levy, retinue, household. Here is my take on the single base unit:

Casualty figures can now be used to show disorder.

If re-basing is not an option, it won't take too long to paint and base some casualty markers. Here is my solution for my ACW games. I could have used foot and cavalry casualty figures however by using horses only and viewing these as officer's mounts, I can use these for artillery and cavalry units also. The dice are roughly 9mm and slightly easier to handle than the 7mm ones.

If some re-basing (or base extension) is a possibility, you can incorporate the dice holders in the base. The last photo shows my solution for my 10mm SYW armies (these are 7mm dice).

Very nice models Westie.

I particularly liked your final photo - rather reminiscent of "old school" wargaming, in all the best ways.
