Here are some thoughts about BAIT  (Bayonet And Ideology Three) Only half formed thoughts at the moment.
Each line needs to ed in a question mark,

Needs to be  a bit simpler than PBI in terms of extras.
Two types of tank, armoured trucks and two types of towed gun.
Return and opp shooting like MOCB. easier because of less LMGs,(should quicken game)
Shorter pre-game.(but still needing skill to succeed)(something fun but with no physical hitting each other)
MOCB type morale system?(extend range)
Tricks, bluffs and ruse de guerre(NEW)
10 army types (approx)
PBI asset system with characteristics for each of the 10 armies.
Interference from off table higher command

etc
etc
No random card system. No mixed forces
4x4 PBI type table
Scenery=  bult up(dense and light), rough ground, rough hills, gentle hills, light woods, heavy woods.etc

I like the idea that the tank/AC side of things will be simplified.

All sounds good. Will flags need to be factored into morale? Also a faster pregame could be useful....are you thinking along the lines of what we used at Miles' PBI day at Entoyment?

DorchesterBede

Good to see this getting some thought, my Republicans could see action soon.

How about looking at each platoon having assets to it. From what I have read (which is not that extensive) tanks, armoured cars etc tended to be spread out rather than whole platoons. So maybe you start with 3 or 4 basic rifle paltoons and add assets such as a tank or HMG - not sure it would work with field guns though.

Could be similar to the new MOCB where each force gets so many asset points to spend.

Although I have started with painting a unit of Nationalists, the rest are at the rear of the queue for the moment. Come winter quarters though production will ramp up for a new yer offensive.

I have painted a force as Sanish foreign legion, just waiting fora war

I have gone into the loft and found my Ian Weekley Spanish buildings.

Flags would look great. However probably only 1 per side on this sized game?
There are some great you tube videos about the Brunette ( a lot of dark haired girls or something similar?) offensive, alcazar storming  and the ghost towns left behind etc.

Assaults (preferably with Dinameteros leading the way).
The difference between Militia and soldiers as well as quality.
The importance of morale (officers, flags and casualties).
Aircraft Intimidation and different forces favouring different terrain types.

are some of the things in BAIT that captured the flavour of the Spanish Civil War for me. I really hope they are retained in some way. :)

Still doing the thinking whilst MOCB gets fully cooked.
Initial ideas are that each player gets 3 platoons (sized according to quality). Then extras are assets from a pointed list.
Along the lines of 1asset point gets 2 more man bases. 7 asset points gets a pair of good tanks. 2 asset points gets aircraft???
I wish to see plenty of infantry on the table and some simplification of PBI.

Pre game just a piggy game with difference in force attendance based on final difference?

Martin, any thoughts yet on scenery requirements, so we can start building stuff meanwhile?

Scenery

I think it will be standard(?) 6x12 templates from S and A.

I think the nature of the Spanish country side means the scenery will either be rocky based or building based.
Prospective TOTAL per game
8 building templates
2 wooded templates
5 ravine/stream lengths
4 rough hill templates

reverse hill and building numbers for the alternate scenery majority.

Plus a load of partials and a single road too.
Special rules for defences and ravines.

Leslie BT

For the partials are you thinking of the sprinkles idea as in PBI3?
What percentage of the 64 squares will be left as open?
Are you still intending to have a separate base as 'bombers' ??  Maybe these become assets?

Problems of lack of support of forces technically on the same side. Moroccans not supporting other Nationalists, Anarchists not supporting Communists.
An appreciable difference in the quality of troops a la AK47, professionals (Condor legion, Legion), regulars (most troops), militias (anarchists, civil guards).

That's an interesting thought. I think Martin has previously indicated that there would not be mixed units in the basic game, but perhaps a "big battle" multi-player variant could include such lack of coordination between forces nominally on the same side?
