BigRedBat who imports the Deep Cut Studios gaming mats has a sale on the grasslands 5'x3' gridded mat. I've just ordered one that will be ideal for several games including Vietnam and Longships.

These mats have taken the gaming world by storm over the last few months and are a good looking and quick alternative to carrying around tiles or boards. I'm pretty sure Martin set this trend in motion with some the cloths he used for games like Battles in the Age of War and Civil War Battles.

Sorry struggling to link but the news item is up on TMP or just use Google 😉

Thanks Sean.

There is indeed a 20% sale running currently. Not immediately obvious from their website, but the link on TMP took me there:

5' x 3', with faint gridlines at 15cm intervals, for £31.99.

Many thanks for that folks - I've ordered myself one. I now have a number of games which use square movement - this is a much better option than sticky dots.

What I did is bought a 6x4 , cut it half, and went halves with someone else at the club. Works out just over £25 (for the FAT mats ones I like)

The Weymouth club has just bought 16 mats from tiny wargames.co.uk , having got a deep cut mat I would say the ones from tiny wargames are just as good and cheaper

Tiny Wargames are at Partisan so I will no doubt get another from there. 16 mats!!! That's a lot 😀

Yes most club members bought at least one

My game mat turned up today, and I must say I am mightily impressed. This will be a real boon for my square bashing games.

I have a snow mat but no soldiers for snow yet.  I have also made a FSB (firebase) mat from a piece of black cloth.  Looks pretty good.
Is the terrain tile dead??

Leman (Andy)

I hope so. Terrain tiles had a tendency to move about, and also to develop fingertip sized shell holes at an alarming rate, even on pre-gunpowder battlefields.

The finger and elegant own sized holes have been a help.for my Somme boards. I obtained 4 old TSS tiles from my club to use as the basis of the Somme battlefield.  When I get home from holidays  I shall be making some progress with these.

But yes I think the days of polystyrene  terrain tiles are gone. In truth no battlefield ever looksince a flat green colour. The new mats we are seeing give a far more life like look to the table.

Maybe I should get a snow mat myself to replay my Towton game. It might draw more favourable comments then 😉

I have a snow mat from tin wargames, next time your down I will show you it
