Visibility. I think I get it, but want to see if I can explain it in my own terms to see if anyone can confirm.

[7][8][9]

1) So, if I am checking visibility from square 9 to square 4, whatever is in sq 5 and 8 wouldn't matter since it isn't "crossing" them? Where I read "crossing" as from one edge to the edge that is parallel  |  |  to it.

2) If I am checking visibility from sq 3 to sq 5 (corner crossing) and sq 2 is empty but sq 6 has buildings, then I have visibility. However, if sq 2 and sq 6 both have blocking terrain, then visibility is blocked? Both adjoining corner squares has to be filled with terrain, correct?

Thanks in advance, and hopefully my examples make sense?

I'm not an expert on PBI but you measure visibility from the centre of the square you are in to the centre of the square you're trying to see. So in your 1st example it depends what scenery is in squares 5 and 8. A building in 8 would probably block line of sight  but probably not if there was a building in square 5.

In your 2nd example I think you are right in both cases. It takes a little while to get used to the concept of squares and how cover and visibility works but it looks like you're on the right track.

its centre to centre so say your in square 8
only buildings/woods/hills block line of sight  - so if there's one in 4 you cannot see 1 but you could see the square above 1
a simple way of calculating LoS is count the squares from the shooter to the obstruction (so if the obstructoin is in 4) that equals 1 squares(5)
count  same number above the obstruction (that's squares 1 ) that's the area you cannot see.
so if its 2 to the obstruction , the dead area is 2 from obstruction to target.

hope this helps

you may ask next what if theres troops you cannot see that are in front of the target  in our case square 1  - you will have to ask martin about that one.

So based on what I am reading in the responses, I was wrong for defining "Crossing" a square as only being from one edge to the parallel opposite edge, and in fact "Crossing" counts if it "Clips" a corner too - the terrain of the clipped square counts for determining visibility. Where I was assuming it didn't. Interesting, and makes it a bit harder to see opponents than I thought initially.

To see if I can clarify, based on the squares and replies above, where 5 & 8 have terrain and my force is in 9...

I would only have visibility into 5, 8 (not through, but into) as well as the full column of 3, 6, 9, correct? I wouldn't be able to see 1, 2, 4, & 7 at all...
