I have used a couple of water products to reproduce marsh, harbour etc.
i have use the Vallejo one and the woodland scenics.
I believe that it might be just as easy to use a high gloss Yacht varnish.

Your experiences and thoughts.

try W and N Galeria Acrylic Mediums, in particular the Gloss Medium and mix with the colour you wish to add to create the correct effect.
Another product is 'Solid Water'.

I've used one of the expensive resins (Woodland Scenics?).

It was good, but I should have poured it in thinner layers initially. It went off completely when I cam to use it again several years later.

You can get some nice yacht varnish for £1 a tub in Poundland (top tip from Ray) that does the job at least as well.

I have used the Vallejo water effect - applied over a painted river surface to produce reflective ripple effect.

In the end i used yacht varnish.  Does not give the depth and transparency, but there  is no scenery underneath . The yacht varnish gives a much nicer gloss though.

Martin,

Have you tried several coats?

I have also use a green wash at the bottom, which seems to help in adding depth.

I did two coats of yacht varnish and am very pleased with the outcome. Cheaper than water effect too.

I think if you are doing standing water then the water effects stuff is awesome. But if its for a running water painting and then a high gloss. A bit of sand in wavy lines near a river back is good. Then you can top this off with a white ish paint

You can put washes on the varnish between the layers to create depth.
