Neil,

I totally agree re. Rodrigues - what a great character.

I'd like to able to say that my children learned some new (rude) words from inadvertently watching this "good for history and foreign languages" programme, although sadly they were probably all too familiar...

I'm impressed, which is something for a cynic like me...

To be picky, Lady Mariko's Japanese accent is a bit dodgy (I've been reliably informed), but I think I'll let that pass.

Up to date with the first 3 episodes now. Best thing I've seen on TV for quite a while.

And there's talk of a sequel - seemingly most likely based in a different era and another one of James Clavell's books. King Rat is set in WW2.

I found 'King Rat' very depressing. Perhaps 'Tai Pan' which would read like 'Succession' but set in Asia...

It looks as though series 2 and 3 (both have apparently been confirmed, with series 3 being the very end) will continue the historical basis of the original book with further events taking place in Japan within the Sengoku Jidai: https://www.esquire.com/uk/culture/a61188028/shogun-season-2-release-date-cast-and-spoilers/

As long as they can make the storyline as good as the original material (now exhausted, of course), this could be really good again.
