Patrols in the Sudan / Proposed jam mechanism.
Last post by martin goddard - September 24, 2025, 09:43:15 AM
Sorry, not any help for those extra apples and pears. :-[

British martini-henry rifles would often jam after continued use.
This is probably important enough to be part of PITS, although we might just leave it out?

Here is the proposal
1. Applies only to British foot, as they are the big shooters. The martini was got rid of in the British units (not in the Sudanese) before the Omdurman campaign.
2. If ever a shot achieves 3 hits. e.g.4,4,6 a jammed result is applied to a shooter base. The probability of this is one shot in 8.
3. The shooter base can no longer shoot.
4. An easy 3,4,5,6 action will allow 1 jammed to be removed. Therefore, the action would need to be carried out twice to remove 2 jams etc.
5. Use a jammed marker or better still a jammed base. Clearer. I dislike those little piles of stones/tiny D6/crystals that some games use to follow a unit about.
6. The consideration, is whether the mechanism helps get authenticity into the game or just slows the play down?

Maybe we would allow Dervish foot to charge cavalry?
Cavalry would not be at a disadvantage as they can claim the +3 for cavalry fighting foot on the open.
British infantry would not be allowed to charge cavalry unless in contact. The British infantry have the use of firepower.

Battles in The Age of War / Support dice
Last post by Nick B - September 24, 2025, 08:41:14 AM
On the QRS the final line of additions/subtractions for dice reads

"+1d6 levy support +2d6 Ashigaru support +4 samurai support"

I can't find any reference to this is the rules - what does this apply to and how, please?

Many thanks

We had a good game last night.
British cavalry v Dervish foot.

Matters to address

Cavalry movement
Cavalry maximum movement limit to 4 squares
Foot maximum movement  limit to 3 squares.

OR reduce action D6 from 6 to 5?

Foot charging cavalry
Needs to be allowed but not from a large distance.
Reduce action D6 might cover this?

Fighting and shooting worked fine.
Players are getting the hang of it.
The "system of 3" will pervade the rules for consistency.

More soon

I'm working on a Later Visigothic DBA army as a prize for a tournament. These are verrrry old 15mm sculpts from TTG, or 15mm.co.uk. Despite their age they look decent with some paint (even my paint...,🙂).
A couple of Peter Pig figures have been drafted in to fill the ranks. One used to be a ? Parthian standard bearer, but now has a Draco and a big round shield. T'other is def a PP horse, but may be a PP Numidian, not sure. He likewise acquired a big shield and nasty attitude to join the Goths...

Quote from: Ilkley Old School on September 23, 2025, 04:06:17 PMI am painting up my first unit of Bulgarians using Kallistra 12mm Russians.

My plan is to use them for the Balkan Wars and WW1 Macedonian campaign.

How many different figure sculpts was that, across all those armies, Martin? We've come a long way since!

When I first saw the 15mm size start with Peter Laing I thought "this is a size I like". I had P Laing armies for colonial(Dervish/British), ancients (Selucids/Romans), dark ages(Vikings), Medieval, ACW and WW2.
