Patrols in the Sudan / Initial assessment of "3 rule"
Last post by martin goddard - September 24, 2025, 01:41:29 PM
The "3 rule" operates by increasing the number of 3 rolls.
This means that it is always 3D6, but the multiple changes.
This is a new invented system.  Thus, there might be changes.

Possible problems
1. Players forget how many 3s they have rolled.
2. Players forget which 3s are both way effects.
3.No re-roll.

Possible advantages
1. Always a 3.
2. No second stage once 3s are rolled.
3. 3 v3 can only create a maximum of 3 hits.
4. Usually only 3 lots  3s to roll.
5. Nice to have a new wargaming idea.

I think it is a most promising system  albeit early days.

I think they'd make an ominous whooshing sound when in flight, and then an annoying "beep, beep" while thinking about what to do next, and finally a very annoying "bleep, bleep, bang!" when they land in your square :)

Battles in The Age of War / Re: Support dice

Yes - I do like the pre game but I do think the effects within it could be amended/enhanced in some cases.

I think it's excellent for adding some fog of war as to what troops you may end up with.

Whilst the rules (and they are still one of only a very few to do this) allow mixed units, I think with the benefit of better period understanding we could do more to introduce rules for force construction and formations that better reflect a Sonnae. In some ways similar to the approach you took in Barons War 2 for the Wards/Battles, but on a unit scale so that units cannot be individual/single weapons and Samurai would not be units on their own.

I think it would be worth completely revisiting the army formation rules - eg Cranes Wing etc.

Cavalry could also be redesigned to be part of the Sonnae as for the majority of clans it played a minor role - being integrated into the Sonnae and either providing extra hitting power on the charge or providing pursuit and harrying troops who fell back from combat.

Sorry - I'm rattling on! 😂

I hope it will happen Nick.
Maybe a CK derivative?
Challenges should stay.
Do you like the pre game?

The Company Rules (TCR) / The sound of the mines

Mines in TCR move around the table in straight lines. They can stop and pause. They can wait.

If a film/fiction helps players into the imagination what sound might they make. Silence is not an option because players need a sound.

Unusual sounds  (a duck) might work?

You probably don't recall be I assisted in writing the original (you kindly gave me a credit in the book!).

I think there are a number of things that could be tweaked or added to enhance the game and add some differentiation between clans and troop types.

I would love to assist again if you look at reviewing the rules.
