PBI / Re: Some more Tactical ramblings

Thanks Martin, this is very useful to a novice like myself!

My favourite tactic? I can't give away confidential information like that.  8)

All the best,

I'd be keen to Have a go at SCW but happy to attend as a German/Italian/Soviet military observer since all I can bring is myself and ignorance of the rules.  ::)

Quote from: martin goddard on May 27, 2024, 08:25:54 AMSome of the story behind it is that the more experienced players  beat the less experienced players.

Just so. I made a sequence of rookie (didn't read the rules) errors which combined with terrible dice scores left me losing both of my games.
By my count I think they were my fifth and sixth games of PBI. Possibly seventh and eighth.
Significantly I am still learning the rules and can see that some of my decisions were poor only with hindsight.
As I told both of my generous opponents, Fred and Stewart, getting a bloody nose will help me remember the rules. Not literally obviously!  ;D

I used the 340pt option for my first game against Fred. I thought that the benefits would be ideal for aggressive chaps whilst overlooking the possibility that I might be defending! Of course I ended up defending in both games.

The 340pt option is a good option to have available I think. I'd stick with +4 to Assets as I don't think it's overly generous. The increased reliability of Assets (probably) and much faster arrival of reinforcements (probably) compensate for the reduced company size about right.
Certainly, I think I had a chance of victory, at least for the first few turns. I can ascribe my loss to poor decisions, ignorance of rules and terrible luck.
If the option doesn't make the cut then I'll still try using it as a house rule.  ;D  I can imagine situations that would rationalise the small unit size for any nation. It was easy for paratroopers, 160pts lost in transit.
I'm happy to keep testing the 340pt option as it might excuse further defeats.  ;D

All the best,
Jim

Oh yes Sean, the very same Jim you played PBI with.  :)
Thanks for the welcome, it was most hospitable of you.
I'm hoping to stick around for a while, asking daft questions!

All the best,
Jim

PBI / Re: Tinkering with 340 s

I like the idea, I may see if I can trim those paras to 340.
I had a bit of a malfunction when I first read your post but I've backtracked and think I'm up to speed.
The +3D6 on assets loses the enhanced reinforcement dice I presume?

Thanks for the tip. I'd have to say it was beginners luck and a charitable opponent Miles!  ;D

War's Wrong Weekender?
Surely only a rotter would start a war without a noble and glorious excuse?

I recognise this is an older topic but I definitely don't miss computations involving armour thickness, armour angle, projectile type, muzzle velocity, your aunt Doreen's favourite colour and any number of other obscure factors.
Maybe that's already been covered but good riddance!  :D
To be fair, I started *serious* wargaming with Gavin Lyall's "Operation Warboard" rules in the 80s. (Before that it was Britains and Airfix in the sand pit).  ;D
I'd give an award for the epic sounding title, which to a teenaged acne ridden Jim conjured up images of "A Bridge Too Far".
However I'd award nil pointes for accessibility.
One novel feature was requiring players to scribe out fiddly little templates on OHP transparency sheets. Don't miss that at all.
I guess it were proper job at the time but I bust so much pocket money trying to mark them out!  :(
Right, I think I might have tired myself out.
Toodle pip chaps.

Aha, I can't believe I missed this thread.
I've been eyeing AK47 as an addition to my lead pile for a while now.
I'll express an interest for now, it sounds like a pleasant way to spend the day.
With regard to colour choices etc, I'll defer to you guys. I do have an unholy clutter of scenic odds and ends that could grace templates. Admittedly not great for uniformity.
All the best,
Jim

They sound like a smart bunch.  ;D
It's a dashed shame to be deprived of tiny tanks, I'll assume they got lost over the channel somewhere.
So thanks Martin, red devils suit me fine.
Thanks for the steer John, I'm sure I can find *something* to shoot the piats at!

All the best,

Good evening chaps, I would love to join you on Sunday, assuming I can borrow an army and hitch a lift?
