Title: PBI competition
Post by: martin goddard on January 24, 2019, 09:12:47 AM
Miles is bringing along an Arnhem mega experience later in the year.
I quite fancied some good old 4x4 PBI action.
How about ether late March or early Aril 2019.
Needs a minimum of 4.

A theme could be added.
Airborne
1940
Far east
Russia
Fall of the Reich

Any of these grab the imagination.  Ae you up for a PBI day.  Probably at Entoyment Poole  Saturday.  Unless a Sunday is better.

RSVP

Likewise - I'd love to join in but that's a tricky time of year with Easter holidays, etc.

Far East theme would be good, more infantry less tanks, 14th army, USMC and Japs + Mike's Dutch.

Please put me down as a maybe, too far away to make definite arrangements.
But this would be a replacement for 'Fisticuffs', so maybe.

Yes Stewart Far East theme would be good.

You also have Australians, Indians, Chinese, Russians as well.

Maybe we can have a team score of allies versus axis. I can field 14th army or Japanese.  Next we need a date. May 4th(might be astar wars day at Entoyment?), 18th or 25th?

Just to add interest I have an Indian based British force and a Japanese force.

Both are in the true scale 54mm. I usual play on a 200 mm square.

If everyone wants to do PBI Day this year ? Then we can arrange it. Which Weekend in May then ? I better put that to Les first if h wants to join in ?
If people want to do a "Far East" ? I ll be able to do an Indian/Burma based Commonwealth force. Slight change to my 1943 army .

I would like to do a "Fall of the Reich" towards the end of the year and into next year ?
I know we have tabled a "1940" games day next year as well.
As Martin wants more RFCM Games Days. I think we can get these organised.
As long as we can get 6-10 people to each of these events ??? On Average.

OK Les. You are front and centre!
Pick a May weekend. Not 11th as it is Exeter show.

Thanks

Would it be asking too much to hold it on the 12th?

Not many would attend both?

Not a problem Les. You are doing the big travelling. i will not be around on the 11th though because i am down at Exeter show. back abut 8pm.
Just see if you can get ferry etc and we will go firm on 11th.  I will contact Entoymnet once you confirm.

Anyone else Ok for that date?  Sean might be ministering on that day?

Far east .  We can use Vietnam scenery if that helps.  Turn up the heating and have lots of halogen lighting.  immersive?

Hello Les

If your 54mm uses 8" squares; that gives a  table 5 feet and a bit , square.
Is it easy to bring over in your motor car?  if so that wold be  areal high light. problem is , the volume of stuff for you to carry. i have a bit of 54mm scenery but not a lot.
A great 2 v 2 game and ideal for a magazine article for WSS?

As Martin says. This would be instead of Fisticuffs. As Stewart cant do April, sometime in May it is !
So Seriously what weekend can you come over for Les ?
Then we can see what everyone else is doing ? The 11th is out because of
Exeter.
Far East. Anytime period ? My force would probaly be 1943/4.

Martin I would come over to go to Exeter as well, so the PBI would be on the Sunday if possible?

Best thing is put it to everyone. Who would play down at Entoyment on a Sunday ? May 12th ?

I'm afraid Sundays are difficult for me - I have other duties then...

If not working I will most certaimnly be 'minstering' across a 4' square table and rolling dice! I have only late war troops....US, German and Russian so may need to borrow if it's Far East or Early war which I am happy to do.

Like me Sean you can adapt what you have ? Russians and late War US. Were both there.

Post by: martin goddard on January 26, 2019, 09:21:41 AM
Hello Sean
I can lend you Japanese, 14th army or USMC no problem.
I am hoping that it will be "tank light". 1943 cut off. There should be extra scenery  to show how very tank hostile the fighting is.
Probably  1 extra wood/jungle/plantation  per player.   Normal choices , then add 2 more woods. that would give it the jungle look.

Must admit i was hoping to use either basic Shermans and or some A/C with a British Recon force,Staghounds/Damliers and Humbers. But must do some research in late Febuary into March once Beachhead is over.

Why not do British 14th army Miles. that would fit in nicely.

Can't play on sundays

The Sunday vote seems to be Les-yes and Stewart/Simon -No.
If we have about 8 or so events a year for RFCM then most people could attend about 4 (i guess) and be happy with that?

Thus the occasional Sunday would be fine if there were the magic 4+ players.
Both days are fine to me, because i am self employed and able to shift around my work schedule (luxury).  Many of the RFCM group are employed, so have restrictions on their availability.

With enough events we can make a satisfactory work around i feel.

Back to Les. Any other weekend in May good for you Les??  Bear in mind that after Brexit there will be no air travel, sea ferries , food or medicine.  I suspect that all borders (and barbers) will be closed too.  So book the ticket before brexit Les or buy a rubber dirigible and i will pick you up at Weymouth beach.

After scaling down Hells Highway game, and looking at things. I was wondering next year doing a Paratroopers PBI day ? It would give those who have "Paras" an outing ? Looking at the Battle of Carentan BofB style it is a relatively small battlefield well within the scope of a 4x4 table. Pegasus Bridge etc etc. The list can go on ! As well as German Paras in Earlier war situations or in Italy 1943/44 ? Battles that can't be done on the Dday or Arnhem games that maybe we should have ?
As we are thinking of doing 1940 next year German Paras in Holland or Belguim ? Mike has Dutch ?
Because these fit the PBI realms of Infantry fighting mainly static defences and defending infantry and guns, and maybe an A/C or a tank ? But not loads of tanks ?
It just a thought ???

Next year 2020.
We have two themes running through the year.
75th anniversary of 1945, the End of the War.
And a new theme for the next 5 years:  80th Anniversary of WW2 starting with 1940.
Phoney war, invasion of Norway, Holland and France. Finland being invaded by the Russians (T28/35 ???) Italians stirring the Pot in the Desert.
So start building your forces.
I ve dug out some old early Pz IV and some newer Pz III while I will have to paint up some Germans in Field Grey.

Thank you for kicking this off, Miles

I already have a cunning plan...

Should we start working out roughly when in the year we want to stage these two (?) events?

It might take folk a little while to build up 1940 forces (that will be the case for me), so maybe start with 1945, and then do 1940 after the summer holidays?

Hey - that's what I'm doing (what - you don't track every single order...?!) ...

How about sculpting a resin 1940 French Laffly truck (the AHS wasn't built until 1941, which I spotted just before I placed my order...)? - I will buy 15!

No, no, no - those 15 trucks are to tow the Panzer-killing field guns, as well as to carry those recon squads armed solely with LMGs :)

Ah - sorry - I'd better buy another one so that you have one to borrow too, then Martin?

I guess that would make it 30 trucks...

I don't mind which way round we do the themed days  next year. 1945  (Fall of the Reich) first or second?  Or 1940 (Fall of France) First or Second?  Must admit I go with Simon on this, as I ve got to paint a Field Grey German army; hopefully over this Winter ish...
Where I have a 1945 Army up and running. Or I can just replace my PIAT s with Boys A/T ?
Maybe a topic to be talked over at WWW this year ? As well as On here of course.
2021 we can go back to just the one year's 80th Anniversary, but it would be a waste not to do both next year, 1940 which I know a lot of people want to do as well as 1945 which is more my Favourite!

Remember I know it seems to be a long way off. 2023. 1943 gives us an opportunity to do KURSK at a few of the shows on a Large table as well as some smaller battles; and even a battle day like we done Ardennes? and Arnhem ? So just to get peoples thoughts and tanks together, so people can't say I didnt know about that ?
We have a few other battles to think about before then, Russia, Desert and even the Jungle, but I would like to have the opportunity to do a big Tank orientated battle 30-40 tanks say each side in the future.

Guys

Ben and I have been giving this some thought, looking at what we want to do for 1940. Couple of ideas musing around, Winter War or early desert.

But before we start, I take it we are just working as individuals not planning a joined up 1940 day, as with Arnhem and the Ardennes?

This is just a normal game day. As we don't do competitions anymore. You can bring whichever army you like. I just listed the type of Army/Wars that were around in that year. I will be bringing either a British BEF or if I get it painted in time a German Pz Grenadier force.
It's just a guide.
The one in November is Themed 1944.
That's an Army that fits a list in the 1943-45 listings if it's not got a dedicated list 1944.
So if it was German and you were saying it fought in Russia then it wouldn't have King Tigers for instance as this would be pre July 1944. But if you said it fought in Poland/Hungry it would as this Is Autumn 1944.
Like I wouldn't be able to field my Comets or Centurions as these were Early to mid 1945.
If you want to bring a themed table to the day then that's ok. As we usually have a table already set up. If it was the snows of Finland I would try to keep the Italians of the Desert off the table !
Just some quick guidelines for you.
That's why I put T28 orT35 ??? Maybe someone might put a Russian force with one or two of these monsters on the table ?
Just to give people ideas?
Miles

Cheers Miles. Think we will go for a themed table as we need two armies, just got to decide whether it's the heat of the desert and some RR armoured cars, or frozen Finns and some Vickers 6 tonners! Choices choices.
