This year marks the 250th year since the Declaration of Independence.

Maybe time to look at WA?

I've heard that WA is great, apart from its lack of grids?  ;)  :D  ;D

I'm rather disappointed that the new Ken Burns documentary series isn't yet available in the UK. It came out last year and is by all amounts very good.

I'm eager to play some Washingtons Army. Having played Civil War Battles a couple of weeks ago, I'm sure it'll be a breeze remembering the rules.

If it is looked at again, I'd love to be involved. Whether that involved grids or not I'm happy either way, but the mechanics still stand up today several years on.

The case for squares in a modern iteration of Washingtons Army is an I threshing one, but I honestly don't mind using my rulers for these rules and CWB (and Battles in the Age of War for that matter 😀)

WA and CWB are probably my favourite PP games. I'd be hard to be persuaded to grid these but if you are going to revisit them please add me to the play test list.

That Ken Burns programme does seem very delayed. Are they trying to make more money from it by some manoeuvring?

Both game systems do need revisiting, but I would prefer the open system rather than Squares ? As this is not ECW ? Which was very regimented every unit was in blocks ? The Americans don't fight like the Europeans? It's a lot more loose the way they Manoeuvre.
The present system shows that ! Very well ?
Going to Squares will get rid of the going into column and being able to snake around and through obstacles? This will just not exist any longer! Also being in Short range or out of it will disappear as range will be by the Square ! Firing at odd angles will disappear as diagonals will become a thing of the past ?
But this is my opinion?
Yes Squares make the game quicker and with modern weapons yes very good.
AK I was concerned but yes it's the best version of the 3 !
But I feel with the Americans, they don't know how to fight by the book ? it will effect it, but we will see ? It's the openness of the warfare that will suffer that's what concerns me ?
I ve said my piece !
But obviously I will still get involved with the play testing ! I need to paint up WA figures and I need Confederates too !

Good to get Responses Miles. Thanks.

WA is not imminent as PITS and Napoleonics are first.

I must admit although 'in my period of interest' this has never been a war I have been that motivated to game. I suspect that may be quite a common thought for gamers. The French Indian war (skirmish) or Seven Years war gets more of my interest. The ACW always gets my vote before it as well.

I suspect this is very much a niche period with some devoted fans but not many.

Sean Clark

I have often wondered what a French Indian game using Men of Company B mechanics would look like...

If one wants too fussy you could use the current AWI range. Just need to find some Courer de Bois (sp?). I know the British uniform especially is probably slightly different. But Men of Company B seems a great fit for this period.

But AWI has always been a favourite of mine and I've had many great games using Washingtons Army.

martin goddard

Possibly PITS too might suit the period?

Yes Martin, I agree. Probably more so new PITS. How interesting.... ;)

The argument for using PiTS in Western games has been there for some time. Substituting the Dervish for American Indians and 7th Cavalry for British or North American forces(Indian wars) has been said for a few years.
Hopefully when the New Pits has come into its final stages these alternatives armies/forces/periods/settings might be explored ? Obviously the NW Frontier has been mentioned as well.
Because this would broaden the appeal of the game especially amongst us (members of the forum) possibly would facilitate us buying some more figures to do these other versions ?
Especially the American version, terrain would have to be looked at slightly differently with trees and woods and possible Rocks and Ravines also the odd river ?
So the American Indians can melt away !
Even use this for the likes of the Confederate Rebel Raiding units (Jesse James gang)
As these are more Skirmish type games that the WA, Western and CWB don't cover but are well within the reach of the figures that PP produces? At would be a good excuse for us members to paint up some more ?
It's only some thoughts !

Good thoughts there Miles.
Something to chat about here on the forum.
