This is for Ian to use on battle day.
It is also here for folks to comment and discuss too.

Close order armoured infantry. 25 points per unit. 9 units= 225
Auxiliary infantry. Armoured.16 points per unit. 2 units= 32
Foot skirmishers. 6 units=42
2 artillery=6

305 (5 point overspend)

Why not reduce to 1 artillery- 302 points , 2points over
Less chance of losing a base

Reasonable point Stewart.
The Romans need artillery to give them some distance effect. I might put in two units of auxiliary bowmen and leave out a legionary unit?  Firepower again.
The problem for the Romans is that all the armoured costs reduces the army sizes a lot.

Alternative version
Close order armoured infantry. 25 points per unit. 8 units= 200
Auxiliary infantry. Armoured.16 points per unit. 2 units= 32 (1 veteran +5)
Auxiliary bowmen armoured. 13 points per unit. 2 units = 26
Foot skirmishers. 5 units=35
2 artillery=6

304 (4 point overspend)

I prefer the second one for aesthetic reasons
I hope to get the rules tomorrow so I will read thought them and get back to you

Remember that Martin put the army together so your best tactic is pointless frontal assaults!
Seriously though it looks good. I would go for some cavalry myself.

Good note John.
I usually erect a pillar on the battlefield afterwards and inscribe "look upon my works you mighty and be impressed". That was inspired by my old chum  Ozymandius. my geeral is usually buried below it.

The trick with the Romans is to have enough units to cover a battle frontage. A small but high quality Roman army will just get surrounded and chopped up.

The number of units  needs to be maximised.
The auxiliaries in version 2 would allow a strong flank advance.
This Roman army would benefit from closed scenery in order to fight in the gaps. Open scenery allows  cavalry armies to  outmanoeuvre the Romans.  That would be Crass.

The Romans need to avoid pursuit rolls as much as possible.
I have played them Vs Germans several times and if they win the first clash they will tend to win overall.
Using tactics to avoid pursuit rolls means they take few casualties and can wear the barbarians down.

martin goddard

I agree Graham. All of the Romans are too valuable to lose in pursuit.

How about
7 closes order- 175
4 auxilia  - 64
2 auxilia bow-26
5 foot skirmishers-35

By my calculations that should be 300 points exactly

martin goddard

That is fine Ian.

I will put that together for you for 7th June.

Is it crass because it happened to Crassus?

A veritable infantry  horde- all I need is an equivalent of the Airfix Roman fort to be 12 again
