Classic Line of Sight Question

In AK-47 Republic Classic, the firer must have a clear line of fire to its target. That must be a gap the same width or larger than its base. Does this mean you draw a line from shooter to target, and there must be nothing in that line? Or is the interpretation that there must only be a small space in front of the base that is the same size as that base?

Unsure which way to interpret this rule

Thanks!

This question came up at Brixcon where a player wanted to use (iirc) bases of infantry correctly spaced to prevent an  enemy tank firing at a tank placed behind them. My recollection is that we all agreed to ignore the rule in  favour of common sense and that this seemed to work well. This was a fun series of games and rules lawyers were looked down on.

I was curious if I could space a 2nd line of infantry far enough behind the first line to be able to shoot while all being in the same unit, but it sounds to me like this is a bit too much rules lawyering as well. Appreciate the insight!
