Bit of both....face to face a lot pre-Covid, then rediscovered solo gaming during lockdown, and really got to enjoy it. All different eras and plenty of variety, plus no need to comply with a gaming friend's preferred period or rules.
Neil Thomas's One Hour Wargames, especially the scenarios, and Bob Cordery's Portable Wargame (+ derivatives) have kept me very busy.

Hman, are you in the Solo Wargamers Association?

Agree about Neil Thomas' rules. Last game I played was an FPW using a one hour scenario, but the C19th rules to play the game. The Krupp guns had great fun with the approaching French. I have to agree as well with the freedom of not having to play periods and rules that do not interest me. I can't play games just for the sake of playing games. The historical setting and rules mechanism have to fire my interest, which itself is motivated by history, so e.g. Battle of Mons very much a yes, Battle of the Somme, nope.

I've long been a mix of solo and gaming with others.  I agree the problem is finding like-minded people.  I only play with friends who want to capture the character of the period, enjoy the game and are not fixated on winning and losing.  Solo is good for testing out ideas, trying out rules and scenarios or going in directions when no one else you know is interested.  You can also build in a lot depth in developing your own background.  I'd recommend the Solo wargamers assoc https://lonewarriorswa.com/blog to the solo gamers if they're not already members.
