Tea towels make for good undulation with the geek mat. I always think that bad dice rolls are dealing with unseen undulations!

Leslie BT

Are these going to be seen on the Bosworth battle site?

Undulations are a must as not many battles were fought on cricket fields. Because I use a fully flocked table it is easy to do undulations just drop a suitably shaped piece of ceiling tile in appropriate places and cover with flock. Cannot show a photo as my table is undergoing surgery as can be seen in my post on Terrain and Figures.

I would always go for items placed on top of the gaming cloth rather than under it. For most rules you need to know where an undulation starts and stops.  Hills, either custom made or purchased, do this when placed on top. Items under a cloth are not as clear. By all means place items under a cloth for aesthetic purposes but these are not "significant" undulations and in rules terms are ignored.

I am happy to go for practicality over aesthetics here too. I find it hard enough to get troops to stand still on a (well defined) hill, without wishing to tempt them to start sliding all over the table!

Well if you want the ultimate practicality us the custo service of Deep Cut Studios. Their mousemat 2D terrain templates are very effective, and I'm sure they would be happy to do some showing smal lumps and bumps. These could the be cut to randoms sizes and laid out where undulations, rather than hills would be most likely.

The think I have noticed when the hills are printed onto the fabric and then stuff put under the mat to create the hill you can not see the hill when the game is film for you tube.

I don't remember being drunk when I wrote the above!
