I've set up a FB discussion group for any like minded folk that enjoy the characterful sculpted miniatures. Entitled in homage to the Yahoo group, this has a wider remit for any of those figures from bygone time. So if you like strip minifigs or valley of the four winds come and have a look

I'll be over to join you Simon. Still have some Seven Years war stuff. And lots of Hinchliffe Landschneckts or are you trying to keep it to 15mm figure?

No anything 'old school' is fine 8)

Since I'm of a certain age to fondly remember Mike's Models and Minifigs old school figs from my teens, I'll be interested to see what you guys are chatting about...

Leslie BT

I can find some Mikes models for some picturses during the week.
Might have some other as well, some may have to be a comp to decide who the maker was!!

Leman (Andy)

Apparently if you request it you can still get Mike's Models from Essex Miniatures. I fondly remember my first Renaissance armies in the early 80s from Mike's Models.

I had thought I'd heard that only certain Mikes Models moulds were still in use - maybe it's that Essex can only cast from the Renaissance range (which I really like - my first 15mm army)?

QuoteEssex can only cast from the Renaissance range

that is correct - Essex have some , but not all of the Renaissance range. You can order then from the site. However, the horses are the Essex horses, so only 'half a job'

I also understand that the moulds are not being renewed/replaced, so once a mould has broken down irretrievably the figure will be withdrawn. I ordered some arquebusiers a few years ago and it was clear that part of the mould had broken off as there was an irregular lump of lead under the armpit.

Was the original sculptor Dave Mason or similar?
When they came out, the MIKES models had impressive detail which was great for painters.

martin :)

Colonel Kilgore

They did indeed, Martin.

I got sent a Mikes Models 15mm French Grenadier of the Guard sample and was sorely tempted (their loan seemed so broad).

But I persevered with 25mm Prince August figures instead (albeit with rather less detail) for several years  :'(

I have of course now learned my lesson.

Funnily enough I was speaking to Aly Morrison today. I had though that Dave Mason was the sculptor, alongside Leon Locke. I was told by Aly that he sculpted the Renaissance range and Medievals , but the rest sculpted by Mike Burton. Pre internet these things are hard to track down!

So Aly's Models would be more accurate.

Leman (Andy)

Probably depends who funded the original venture.

I still have some lovely Mikes Models ECW figures and also my original, first buy, mini figs ECW on a strip
