Good use of a picture in this topic. Many will not remember the figures I was talking about. Thank you.
Obviously that figure is placed with a unit when it is in shield-wall. I believe that it is more visually pleasing than a counter with "shieldwall" written on it. Such figures were done for AK47 too.
Figures like this are of course a PP innovation.

My thoughts were that these specific figure idea (shield wall etc) could be extended to a blank speech bubble. Upon this bubble players could use a non permanent pen and write appropriate words about unit status e.g.low morale, excellent leader (or excellent ladder if you are a bad speller?).... The writing would need to be quite small though.
For AWI commanders I used small pearlised buttons built into the general's bases. On the button I wrote the general's command value and rubbed it off after each game. I thought it worked really well.
I think speech bubbles will catch on (eventually?) just as the symbol on the 6 face and grids have done (?)
