Morale
« on: December 22, 2020, 12:26:03 PM »
In FM morale failure results in the loss of bases.

Vet/av/raw lose 2,3,4 respectively if they fail. Thus morale failure is worse for poorer quality  troops.
We have found that the loss of 3 from an average unit of 12 with only 6 remaining can be too catastrophic.

We will now try 1,2,3 instead of 2,3,4.   BUTT 1 for veterans is hardly any loss at all ???

Good idea Martin along with the new asset ‘reserves’ should make units last longer on the games table.

I'd have thought that an average unit at half strength would be pretty shaken anyway. So not surprising if half the remaining troops in the unit favour the beer tent.
Perhaps it would be better if all units lost 2 bases but the morale test gave a modifier +/- for vet/poor troops.
Or perhaps leave current rules in place, so 2,3,4 bases lost but allow a saving throw to try to retain some or all of the lost bases (or does that over complicate things).

Might it be possible to work in a version of the Bloody Barons base recovery system? Raw units could thus offset the risk of everyone running away by pausing from time to time to gather up stragglers? This could have the effect of allowing them to do / move less while still being able to engage in suicidal frontal charges in a dramatic all-or-nothing roll of the dice if they so choose?

Without adding to complexity too much (?) I will try the following.

If fail
Raw 5D6
Av 4D6
Vet 3D6

4,5,6=lose 1 base.  Re-roll allowed.
This will probably give loses  Vet/av/Raw of 1,1.5,2 base lost (allowing for re-rolls).
This adds complexity though.

I do like the idea of the dice roll to see how many bases are lost, rather than the fixed number.
