14th Army as Aussies
« on: August 30, 2020, 10:36:55 AM »
I'm interested to see that folk are using Peter Pig 14th Army figures as Aussies for the Crete game: Miles' work-in-progress figures are really starting to look the part.

This could be an opportunity to revive interest in the truly "Forgotten Army" of the rather nice but underused WW2 codes 363 to 375?

A number of mine are from PP ranges, Vietnam, 8th army, with a lot of head swaps from most of the different heads in the Heads and odds range.
Too many floppy heads and long trousers in the 14th army.
Miles is only doing the RAF detachment, so they may work for these.

In my Aussie army for Crete, I have deliberately over done the soft Australian hat to make a point they are Australians. I know that in the reality of combat they would have worn battle bowlers, but they are only toys  ;), so they will live to fight another day.

I'm looking forward to seeing the end results of the different approaches by Miles, Les and Dave & Ben (has Ben been coaxed into doing any painting yet...?).

Take out the sten guns, piats and flamethrowers you have a pretty good choice of miniatures from the range to use as Aussies etc. The latter I can't remember if Aussies had flamethrowers on the island. Other folk may wish to chip in.

Les I am now doing more than the RAF detachment. I am doing All the Australian for table 3 including tanks and Artillery.
So far I have converted normal British infantry into Aussie figures with Head Swops and as is. Because it does seem that not all wore shorts, and some kept their European Tunics on as well. I ve also now decided to make a proper 8th Army force. As people know I usually do more than the usual required bases ! As we have 1941/42/43 and Italy 1944 to come in the next few years. I was going to do an Afrika Korps instead. I can use British infantry from all of the ranges, with Head Swops, and correct painting.
I ve been using Vallejo Iraqi Sand as the base colour, and Stone grey for the Webbing. Mainly.
Not sure which colour to use as “highlight” yet ? Would Ivory be too much ? Any suggestions please ?

Are you going to use AP soft tone or similar over the base painting, if so use Iraqi sand to highlight after the soft tone.

Simon C suggested trying contrast paint Aggaros Dunes with maybe a bit of Plaguebearer Flesh mixed in .. that should do the trick.

For faded khaki so I am going to give that a go. I'll tell you how I get on.

That sounds like a good plan, Les - I look forward to seeing how this works out.

Will you be using the special primer for contrast paint too?

I have used PP 14th Army as Aussie soldiers.  They work well.  Back in the day they were the only option in 15mm.  Flick the sten gun guys.

A better choice is to use the Peter Pig 8th Army figures and do slouch hat head swap heads on 25% of them.  I reckon that would look a lot better for Crete and give that national flavour.

As above, the Australians didn’t have flame throwers until the pacific.  And they used the American version.  On Crete they don’t have much at all, mostly light weapons.  Everything got left in Greece.
